DONALD J. MERCER
CLAYTON - Donald Jenner Mercer, 72, of 202 Kildee St., was born May 29, 1926 in Bolivia, N.C. to Miles Fletcher and Margaret Edwards Mercer, died Tuesday, January 12, 1999 in Rex Hospital, Raleigh.
Service 2 p.m. Friday at Horne Memorial United Methodist Church, with entombment to follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Rev. Jerry Dodson, Rev. Richard Stone and Rev. James Lupton officiating.
Arrangements by McLaurin Funeral Home.
Mr. Mercer was a 1943 graduate of Bolivia High School. He attended Southern College, Chattanooga, TN. He resided in Cedar Island, from December of 1983 through December of 1994 and in Creedmoor, from May of 1965 through December of 1983.
He was a member of the Horne Memorial United Methodist Church and its Elbert Jones Sunday school class and United Methodist Men. He was also a member of Granite Masonic Lodge 191 in Clayton, NC. He was a former member and president of Creedmoor Lions Club. He was active in church and community affairs wherever he lived.
He was retired from No Nonsense Fashions, Creedmoor, N.C.
He is survived by: wife, Etta Daniels Mercer of Clayton; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Mercer Trogdon and husband, David Michael of Cedar Island, Donna Mercer Surrett and husband, David Cofield of Taylors, SC; brother, A. Cameron Mercer Sr. of Clayton; sister, Thelma Mercer Comeau Gregory of Clayton; grandchildren, Myles David Surrett, Lydia Emily Surrett, Alec Taylor Surrett, all of Taylors, SC
He was preceded in death by brother, Miles Fletcher Mercer Jr.; sister, Ruth Mercer Mann.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Elbert Jones Sunday school class of Horne Memorial UMC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Horne Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 475, Clayton, NC.
Family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

DEBORAH "DEBBIE" MORRIS
HOLLY RIDGE - Deborah "Debbie" Sue Morris, 42, of Holly Ridge, died Thursday morning at UNC-Hospitals in Chapel Hill after an extended illness.
Ms. Morris was born in Virginia but had been a resident of this area for many years.
She is survived by her parents, Bob and Evelyn Morris of Sneads Ferry; two brothers, Jeff Morris and wife, Gail of Scotts Hill, Anthony Morris of Angier; half-sister, Mandy Boggs and husband, Patric of Brookneal, Va.; half-brother, Randy Morris of Lynchburg, Va.; paternal grandmother, Virginia Morris of Brookneal, Va.; many nieces and nephews.
Ms. Morris was a great lover of art and was very interested in drawings of all kinds. She also attended Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Church.
Funeral arrangements by Jones<\ n> Funeral Home, Holly Ridge. Funeral service will be held at Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 16, 1999 at 3:30 p.m., conducted by Reverend Norm Story.
The family will receive friends at their home in Sneads Ferry.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.

MARTHA W. PLEASANTS
RALEIGH - Martha Walsh Pleasants, infant daughter of Megan and Charlie Pleasants, granddaughter of "Nick" Pleasants of Cary, Donna and Bob Walsh of Wake Forest. Aunts and uncles, Barbara and Ben Askew and family of Onancock, VA, Shawn and Trish Walsh of Raleigh, and Shane Walsh of Long Beach, NC.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at North Raleigh United Methodist Church, 8501 Honeycutt Road. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duke Childrens Hospital, DUMC, Development Office, Box 2975, Durham, NC 27710.
The family will welcome friends at their home, 2704 Hiking Trail, Raleigh, after the burial.

MATTIE "RED" SPEED
FUQUAY-VARINA - Ms. Mattie "Red' Speed, 73 of 432 Washington St., Fuquay-Varina passed on January 11, 1999 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral 12 noon at First Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens, Raleigh.
Surviving: son, Aaron R. Speed of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Veltrina Speed, Brianna Speed, and Aaron Speed Jr.; sisters, Delcenia Thomas, Gladys Hawkins, Rosella Tuncle, and Katherine McBennett.
Visitation, 11-12 noon Saturday at 1st Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina.
Services under the direction of Trice Funeral Home.

C. STINSON "BILL" WILLIAMS
November 3, 1912 - January 13, 1999
SMITHFIELD - C. Stinson "Bill" Williams, 86, of 104 E. Riverside Drive, died January 13, 1999 at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness.
Mr. Williams was born in Wingate, N.C., the son of the late Rufus Wilson Williams and Vena Stinson Williams. He was a graduate of Western Carolina College with a degree in history. Bill was a District Manager with Southern Bell Telephone Co., in Raleigh, when he retired in 1976 with 40 years of service.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in the Riverside Cemetery with the Rev. Lee Colbert to officiate.
Surviving are his wife, Ernestine Jones Williams; son, Jerry Wilson Williams of Raleigh; brothers, Keith Williams of Indian Trail and E.H. Williams of Asheboro; sister, Miriam Lemmond of Matthews; granddaughters, Ginny Poulson of Raleigh and Lynn Bruner of Charlotte; grandson, Lee Williams of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

ROSA SMITH WILLIAMS
RALEIGH - Rosa Smith Williams, 87, a resident of Britthaven Nursing Center, died Thursday, January 14, 1999 at Wake Medical Center.
Graveside service 3 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 1999 at Tippett's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving: sons, Ernest Williams Jr. and his wife, Myrtle of Knightdale, Willard Williams and his wife, Eunice of Knightdale; daughter, Sally Mae W. Eatmon of Bailey; sister, Molly White of Franklinton; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
Family will receive relative and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, January 15, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, N.C. 27545.

SCOTT A. BECKWORTH
RALEIGH - Scott A. Beckworth, 33, died January 14, 1999, at his home in Raleigh, NC. He was born in Asmora, Ethiopia, Africa on August 30, 1965. He attended Oakton High School and later attended American University, School of International Service and graduated in 1992. Scott served in the U.S. Army from 1983 through 1988. While serving, he received many honors including: an Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with OLC, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was also involved with with Special Forces Association. He was currently working for Carolina Power and Light.
Scott is survived by his wife, Tracy L. Beckworth; mother and father, Sue C. and Hancel A. Beckworth of Punta Gorda, FL; brothers, John K. Beckworth and wife Ellie of Annandale, VA, and H. Andrew Beckworth and wife Susan of Falls Church, VA.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Falls Church, VA, on Tuesday, January 19 at 11 a.m. with Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, 4th floor, Raleigh, NC 27605, or to the American Cancer Society.

JOHN D. CHAMPION
FUQUAY-VARINA - John Dixon Champion, 83, died Friday, January 15, 1999.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Champion Family Cemetery, Cokesbury Road, Fuquay-Varina.
Mr. Champion was a World War II veteran of the US Air Force having served 11 years from 1941-1952.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Champion Sr., and Mae Ola Jones Champion and sisters, Annie Lee Champion and Mary Champion Dempsey.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Champion; sisters, Mattie Belle Champion Brown of Fuquay-Varina and Lois Champion Cook of Marion.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, January 16, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home.

ANNA J. CONYERS
NOV. 26, 1927 - JAN. 15, 1999
RALEIGH - Anna Jean Conyers, 71, a retired administrative assistant with the NC Dept. of Motor Vehicles, died Friday.
Funeral services, 2 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: brother, Stan Conyers of Garner; nieces, Debra C. Fearing of Raleigh, Sandi C. Anderson of Youngsville and Teresa C. Dixon of Wilmington; and special friends, Gladys and Everette Jones of Raleigh.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, 1-2 p.m. Sunday.

ANGSHUMAN DE
RALEIGH - Angshuman De, 48, died Wednesday, January 13. Born in Calcutta, India, Mr. De came to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1957 with his family and had lived in North Carolina most of his life.
He graduated from Broughton High School and the Design School at N.C. State University. He received a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He has practiced architecture in Raleigh for over 20 years and designed buildings in North Carolina and many other states. In Raleigh, he is noted as the architect of the Cameron Village Renovation.
Mr. De is the son of Dr. R.K. De of Raleigh and the late Anima De. He is also survived by his wife, Deborah, his sons, Anjon S. De and Pran S. De, his sister, Dr. Sushmita De-Allen and family and brother, Avi Dey and family.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, January 17 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.

NORFLEET A. DEAN
RALEIGH - Norfleet Alexander Dean, 73, of 2605 Springhill Ave., died Friday at his residence. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and also the founder of Dean Upholstery Co. of Cary. He was the son of the late Prentise Coldan and Eva Baker Dean.
Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday, Carolina Pines Baptist Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. today at Montlawn Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Reba Guy Dean; sons, Glenn Dean and Tim Dean, both of Garner; daughter, Wondra Stevens of Raleigh; brothers, Jack J. Dean of Fuquay-Varina, Coldan J. Dean of Raleigh; sisters, Louise Dean Bunn of Raleigh, Zola Dean Boyette of Garner, Clarice Dean Brown of Mississippi; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Also sister-in-law, Elva Dean Sauls.

ANNA CHRISTINE C. DeSAIX
CHAPEL HILL - Anna Christine Calhoun DeSaix of Chapel Hill, formerly of Asheville, died January 13 after a long period of declining health. She was 83 years old.
Chris was the widow of The Rev. Pierry F. "Pete" DeSaix who died in 1991. They had been married for 53 years. She is survived by son, Frank DeSaix of Hillsborough; son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Peter and Jean DeSaix of Chapel Hill; granddaughters, Anna and Amy DeSaix; daughter and son-in-law, Mimi and Tom Harshbarger of Weaverville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Suzanne DeSaix of Lovettsville, VA; grandchildren, Todd, Matthew and Kaila DeSaix.
Chris was born in Altoona, PA and raised in Wichita, KS where she graduated from the University of Wichita. She pursued graduate studies in Social Work at the University of Chicago School of Social Work and Northwestern University. Chris was involved in Children's services throughout her professional career as a Social Worker. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and a Charter member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. She was director of the first mainline school in North Carolina for developmentally disabled children. She also worked for the American Red Cross. Upon moving to Asheville in 1961, Chris was the supervisor for the western district office of the Children's Home Society of North Carolina, for five years. She then joined the faculty of the University of Georgia as a research associate with Dr. Norman Polansky. She co-authored numerous publications including "Roots of Futility", a book examining maternal instincts as pertained to child neglect in the southern Appalachians; and "the red book". a guide for NC Social Workers investigating child neglect. After the research study was completed, she became the western regional Services supervisor for the North Carolina Department of Social Services. Chris retired from that position in 1982.
Chris was actively involved at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Asheville and later at All Soul's Cathedral where she worked as a volunteer in the parish of rice. She was a member of Rotary's The Inner Wheel. She served on the board of directors of Thompson Children's Home. She was a Guardian ad Litem for children in Buncombe County. Upon moving to Chapel Hill in 1994, she attended Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church.
Chris was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Major Melvin Calhoun and Anna Christina Marquerita Christiansen Calhoun; sisters, Blanche Tibbets and Leona Houser; brothers, John James and Lester Calhoun. In addition to her children and their families Chris is also survived by her sister, Betty Wright of Pittsford, NY and brother, Paul Calhoun of Valley Center, KS.
Services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Chunn's Cove in Asheville at 2 p.m. on January 23 with graveside services in St. Luke's Garden of the Ressurection. The Reverend Stephen Hines will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Thompson Children's Home or to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.

CHARLES PHILIP HOLZ
RALEIGH - Charles Philip Holz, 83, a retired Professional Engineer, died January 14 in Raleigh. Mr. Holz who was born in Montgomery, W.VA, moved to Raleigh four years ago from Charleston, W.VA. Mr. Holz owned and operated Industrial Equipment Company in Charleston for over 40 years before retiring in 1991.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.
