ROBERT R. "SLIM" COX
HAMLET - Mr. Robert Ross "Slim" Cox, of 401 Champlain Street, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999 at Hamlet Hospital. He was born Dec. 21, 1924 in Raeford. He was the son of Leroy and Ruby Anne Davis Cox. He was an automobile mechanic and former owner of Robert's Auto Center. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force in WWII, member of Sunset Harbor Baptist Church and former minister of Free Will Baptist Association.
He is survived by wife, Mrs. Eunice Margaret Cox of Hamlet; daughters, Mrs. Ann Cox Loblein of Holiday, Fla., Mrs. Joyce Cox Katz of Garner, Mrs. Linda Cox Bates of Asheville, Ms. Roberta Cox Johnson of Hamlet.
Visitation from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Harrington Funeral Home. Graveside service 11 a.m. Saturday at Richmond Memorial Park by Rev. Bill Greer and Rev. Marvin Taylor.

GARNER - Mildred F. "Millie" Creech, 65, of 1103 Creech Road, a retired library assistant with the State of NC, died Thursday.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.

JESSIE KEARNS CROUSE
DENTON - Jessie Kearns Crouse, 87, of Crousetown Road, Lexington, NC died Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Community General Hospital. Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Rev. Chris Smith officiating. Interment, Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Crouse was born May 14, 1911 in Randolph County to Benjamin M. Kearns and Carrie Cranford Kearns. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Silver Valley Extension Homemaker Club. In the past she had served as a 4-H Club Leader. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Denton School Little Store and the School Cafeteria. She was married to Reece Crouse who died in 1980.
Surviving: daughters, Mrs. Roy (Carolyn) Crouse Register of Pinehurst and Nancy Crouse Jeffries of Raleigh; four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Charlie Kearns of Forest City; sisters, Mozelle Kearns Hardy of High Point.
The family will see friends 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at Briggs Funeral Home.

MARGIE B. CRUTCHFIELD
DURHAM - Margie Bailey Crutchfield, age 90, of 66 Forest Oaks Dr. died Thursday in Carver Living Center. A Durham native, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Bessie Scott Bailey. Mrs. Crutchfield and her husband, the late Aubrey Crutchfield, owned and operated the Model Food Store in Durham for many years. She was a member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church and the Estherian Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two children, Fred Crutchfield and his wife, Linda, of Durham and Judy C. Mobley and her husband, Deon, of Durham; sister, Geraldine Pickett of Durham; grandchildren, Michael Crutchfield and his wife, Teresa, of Raleigh, Jeffrey Mobley and his wife, Jennifer, of Apex and Pamela Mobley of Raleigh; and a great-grandson, Anthony Crutchfield.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hall-Wynne Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Byers officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

ANGSHUMAN DE
RALEIGH - Angshuman De, 48, died Tuesday, January 13. Born in Calcutta, India, Mr. De came to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1957 with his family and had lived in North Carolina most of his life.
He graduated from Broughton High School and the Design School at N.C. State University. He received a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He has practiced architecture in Raleigh for over 20 years and designed buildings in North Carolina and many other states. In Raleigh, he is noted as the architect of the Cameron Village Renovation.
Mr. De is the son of Dr. R.K. De of Raleigh and the late Anima De. He is also survived by his wife, Deborah, his sons, Anjon S. De and Pran S. De, his sister, Dr. Sushmita De-Allen and family and brother, Avi Dey and family.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, January 17 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.

ZEBULON - Ms. Edith Ruth Fowler, 59, of 7101 Grape Arbor Lane in Zebulon, expired on Wednesday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
The service will be professionally conducted on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Feggins-Feggins Funeral Chapel in Wake Forest.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service.

GREENSBORO - Deidre Rhudy Jessup, 34, died Wednesday, January 13, 1999, at her home following a lengthy illness.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 1999 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, with Father Waldek Ziolkowski officiating. Burial will follow in Westminster Gardens Cemetery.
Deidre was born September 1, 1964 to Jim and Elly Rhudy. She graduated from Gimesley High School and was employed at the Polo/Ralph Lauren Distribution Center as a Customer Service Representative.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, are two children, Erin Lane Jessup and Grayson Taylor Jessup; three brothers and their wives, Steve and Janet Rhudy of Garner, Jeff and Lori Rhudy of High Point, Chris and Bonnie Rhudy of Jamestown; four nephews, Daniel Rhudy, Matt Rhudy, Adam Rhudy and Jarod Rhudy; a great-nephew, Robby Rhudy. Deidre was married to Ricky Jessup of Greensboro.

RACHEL C. JOHNSON
FOUR OAKS - Miss Rachel Christine Johnson, 5, of 8993 Hwy. 301, died Thursday a.m. of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Miss Johnson was born in Harnett County on Dec., 18, 1993. Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday 11 a.m. at Oliver's Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Dr. James Bousman will officiate over the service.
Surviving are mother, Kimberly B. Johnson of Four Oaks, father, Scott Johnson of Benson; brother, Zachary Johnson of the home; maternal grandparents, L.C. and Sue Beasley of Four Oaks; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Peggy Mayes of Benson; great-grandparents, Christine M. Johnson of Benson, Ethan and Lena Hayes of Four Oaks.

DR. JOSEPH M. JOHNSTON
ATLANTA GA - Dr. Joseph M. Johnston, 82, superintendent of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools, North Carolina educator, and director with the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, died January 13, 1999 in Dunwoody, Georgia where he had lived since 1971.
Born on December 31, 1916 in New York, N.Y., Johnston grew up in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. He earned an A.B. in History in 1938 from New York University. He taught at Mt. Vernon High School before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. After service in the Signal Intelligence Corps and discharge in 1946 as a Major, he was principal at Spencer High School, Spencer, VA until he enrolled in the graduate School of Education of the University of North Carolina. He received a doctorate degree there in 1953.
He served as principal of Asheboro High School, Asheboro, NC from 1951 to 1956, principal of Chapel Hill High School and assistant superintendent of schools in 1957 and superintendent of Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools until 1962 during which period he oversaw the integration of the system's schools. In 1962 he joined the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction where he directed implementation of federal education assistance programs. He was elected president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1969. In 1970 he was appointed associate executive director and later executive director of the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools where he served until his retirement in 1984.
Among Johnston's interests were the school accreditation process, the legal structure of public schools, the authority of its administrators and governing boards, and the means and methods of racial integration. "Students were inspired by his teaching and remembered him fondly, describing him as "Rockin' Doc...our best fan!' " in one school's student publication. Other educators and teachers recognized him as one of the south's leading educators of their generation. Johnston's quiet dignity and numerous contributions to public school administration through his teaching, travel, and leadership won him abundant respect and praise throughout his career and into retirement.
He was a member of St. Martin's in the Fields, Atlanta, GA and was active in the Episcopal Church, having served on the vestries of the Church of Good Shepherd, Asheboro, NC; the Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC; and St. Patrick's, Dunwoody, GA.
Johnston is survived by his wife, Helen Stella Carter Johnston; one daughter, Pamela J. Schreiber of Port Townsend, WA; two sons, Douglas A. Johnston of Raleigh, NC and Joseph M. Johnston, III, of Atlanta, GA; and four grandchildren, Julie Schreiber Erickson, Mark Schreiber, Mignon D. Johnston, and Helen G. Johnston.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 16, 1999 at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, Dunwoody, Georgia and internment in the Memorial Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. Memorials may be made to St. Martin's Memorial Fund and to American Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

RALEIGH - Garriet Cooke Jones of Raleigh, NC departed this life Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at Rex Hospital.
Funeral service to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 16, at First Baptist Church. Burial follows at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Viewing at the church from 12-1 p.m. Family will receive friends from 12:30-1 p.m.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and our cherished memories of him will be our source of strength.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 year, Dorothy Holden Jones; his children, Sharon Smith, Patricia Mitchell and her husband Ronald Mitchell, and Terry Dion Jones and his wife Sherry Jones; four grandchildren, Neal Calloway, Damonda Sanders, Makieba Sanders, Tiana Jones and Zarek Jones; two great-grandchildren, Briana McCotter and Kiana McCotter; sisters, and brothers, Charles Jones (Alice), Mable Hicks, Susie M. MICHAEL C. KELSAY
WILMINGTON - Michael C. Kelsay, of 357 R.L. Honeycutt Dr., Wilmington, NC passed away at his home, Thursday, January 14th. Mike was the son of the late Hoyt C. Kelsay of Raleigh, and Eva L. Kelsay of Wilmington. He moved to Wilmington in 1990 from Raleigh, where he still has many friends. Mike was retired from U.P.S. and currently owned and operated Cape Fear Courier, Inc.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy and son, Gray Kelsay of the home, his mother, Eva Kelsay of Wilmington; daughters, Jennifer and Shelly Kelsay of Virginia; and sister, Diane Simpson of Dothan, Alabama.
Mike and Cathy were active member of Pine Valley Country Club, where his good humor and outgoing personality will be forever missed. He never met a stranger, and always became a friend.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Rd., Wilmington.

HOLLY SPRINGS - Electer B. Kersey, of Bass Lake Rd., died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh. She attended Fuquay Consolidated School, Fuquay-Varina. She worked many years in the tobacco industry.
The family will receive Friends 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999 at First Baptist Church at Holly Springs. Funeral service will begin immediately after visitation.
She is survived by her husband, Pirlee Kersey; daughters, Delores Wilson (Jenatus) and Pearly Ray, all of Holly Springs; sister, Louise Battle of Fuquay-Varina; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one foster daughter, Geraldine Bain (David) of Holly Springs; six foster grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
