RAYMOND A. TURNAGE
ERWIN -- Raymond Allen Turnage, 87, died Tuesday afternoon at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wilda May Pope, and his wife, Mary Messer Turnage. On his spare time, he made small fishing boats. He also Retired from Erwin Cotton Mills after 56 years. He was also the last Charter Member of the Erwin Church of God.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Erwin Church of God, with Rev. Currie Parker officiating and burial will follow in Erwin Memorial Park.
He is survived by two sons, Donald Raymond Turnage of Garner, Joe Allen Turnage of Lillington; three daughters, Wanda T. Barefoot of Falcon, Doris T. Ennis of Coats, Elgie T. Beasley of Angier; 2 brothers, Woodrow Turnage of Erwin, Fred Turnage of Richmond, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.

DONALD EDGAR WINSTEAD
NASHVILLE -- Donald Edgar Winstead, 65, owner of Don Winstead Signs, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999. He was born March 20, 1933 in Nash County, son of the late Hassell Winstead.
Surviving: wife, Roberta "Bert" Eason Winstead of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bobby" and Ellin Winstead of Raleigh; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and John Tote of Cary; granddaughter, Emily Winstead; mother, Eula Wilmoth of Rocky Mount; half-brother, Joseph D. Winstead of Augusta, GA.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Nashville Baptist Church with Rev. Dougald McLaurin officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Johnson Chapel, Nashville.

WILLIAM J. ELLIS
RALEIGH -- William "Bill" Ellis, 89, died Saturday night at his home. Bill was a native of North Carolina. He grew up in Goldston, a small town in Chatham County about fifty miles west of Raleigh.
Bill was a chemical engineer by profession. After graduating from NC State in 1933, he worked for twenty-eight years in a viscose rayon plant in Covington, Virginia. It was there that he met his wife Peggy, a nurse at the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Hospital. When the rayon plant closed in 1961, they moved to Raleigh where Bill worked for the State of North Carolina in the Purchase and Contract Division. While there, Bill was the chemical engineer responsible for writing specifications and for helping the purchasing agents and any others needing technical assistance. Bill retired in 1974 and he and Peggy have lived in Raleigh since then.
During World War II, Bill served overseas in the Southwest Pacific where he was Special Equipment Officer for the military Intelligence Service. The special equipment was principally intended to aid in the survival of fighter pilots and bomber crews who were downed in combat operations, from the 5th and 13th Air Force. He left the Army with the rank of Captain.
In 1954, Bill and Peggy took up wild flowers as something that they enjoyed doing together. They began taking pictures of the wild flowers to show their friends, which led to many wild flower slide presentations over the years. They pursued this hobby up until recent years.
Bill is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Peggy Long Ellis; three sisters, Louise Ellis of Cary, Mildred Ellis of Charlotte, and Elizabeth Davies and husband Lawrence of Oreland, PA and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
The family request that memorial gifts be made in the name of Bill Ellis to the Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 1999. A memorial service will be held at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church 11 a.m. Wednesday. A graveside service will be held at the Goldston United Methodist Church Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
ROBERT M. HUNTER
RALEIGH -- Robert Mullins Hunter, 71, of 1205 Canterbury Road, died Sunday, January 31, 1999. Mr. Hunter was born in Greensboro, NC to the late John B. and Louise Pickel Hunter. Mr. Hunter spent 23 years in the United States Air Force retiring as a Master Sergeant.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Forest Hills Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church.
Surviving is his wife, Elizabeth W. Hunter, two brothers, David Hunter of Montgomery, AL and J.P. Hunter of Winston-Salem, NC; two sisters Nancy Hern of Cary, NC and Nell Myers of Ft. Worth, TX.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to the Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607.

WILLIAM BAXTER "BILL" PORTER
RALEIGH -- William Baxter "Bill" "W.B." Porter, 71, of Raleigh, died Sunday, January 31, 1999 at his residence.
Mr. Porter was born in Mecklenberg County on January 5, 1928, the son of the late Elvin P. and Madelyn Faires Porter.
He was the founder of W.B. Porter & Co.
Surviving are four sons, Jeffrey Porter and wife, Paula of Smithfield, Richard W. Porter and wife, Charlotte of the home, Mark A. Porter and wife, Wanda of Raleigh, Kent Porter and wife, Brenda of Willow Springs; two sisters, Lucille Cartwright and Nan Nugent, both of Virginia; one brother, Robert E. Porter of Florida; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; special friends, Doris Stancil and Steve Smith.
Graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1999 in the Montlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum by Rev. Robert Boone.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, N.C.

BARBARA A. BENSON
MARATHON, WI -- Barbara Andrews Benson, died at home in Marathon, Wisconsin on Jan. 5, 1999, of cancer.
She was born Nov. 19, 1926 in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of Karl and Grace Mahler. She graduated in 1947 from Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lyunchburg, VA, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In June of that year, she married
Dr. George Reid Andrews. He preceded her death in 1977.
Mrs. Benson moved to Wausau with her family in 1960. From 1970 to 1982 she worked for Wausau Insurance, serving as director of the company's affirmative action program. During these years she also helped found The Woman's Community, and was a member of its board of Directors. A long-time member of the Universalist Unitarian Church, she served on its board of trustees from 1980 to 1982.
In 1982, Mrs. Benson retired from Wausau Insurance to begin a second career as a lawyer. She attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, earning her law degree in 1985. Returning to Wausau, she served on the Wausau Police and Fire Commission and on the Marathon County Civil Service Commission. After several years in private practice, she joined Wisconsin Judicare, a nonprofit legal services agency, as a staff attorney in 1988. In addition to her general staff work, Mrs. Benson directed Native American Elders Outreach Project, traveling to reservations throughout Northern Wisonsin to provide legal services to elderly native Americans. In 1994 she received the State Bar Pro Bono Award as the outstanding legal services attorney in the state of Wisconsin. She retired from Judicare in 1997.
In 1994, she became the wife of Burton Benson. He survives. She is also survived by her three children, Reid Andrews, Pittsburgh, PA, Alison Andrews, Lakewood, CO, Douglas Andrews, Jersey City, NJ; three grandchildren.
JOSEPH ELMER BOYKIN
WENDELL -- Joseph Elmer Boykin, 67, of 2140 Davistown Road, died Monday, February 1, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Mr. Boykin had retired with 20 years of service with Ready-Mix Concrete Company and also retired from Capital City Ready Mix Concrete Company as a supervisor.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial, Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Betsy Meacombs Boykin; daughters, Joy L. Burchette of Wendell, Dawn Duncan and her husband, James of Wendell, Melinda Lee Perry and her husband Dale, of Wendell; stepdaughters, Angela Glover of Sims, Beverly Whitson of Middlesex; brother, Johnell Boykin of Bowie, MD; sister, EJay Evans of Williamsburg, VA; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Rd., Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home.
BETH A. BROWN
CHAPEL HILL -- Beth Brown, 50, died Friday, January 29, 1999 in Chapel Hill. A long time New York City Editor, Ms. Brown moved to Chapel Hill in 1984. She volunteered and was a board member for the Orange County Coalition for Battered Women in the 1980's. Ms. Brown graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1990 and received her masters of social work in 1992. She was employed by the American Social Health Association in the RTP working at the Centers for Disease Control's National Aids Hotline since 1993.
She is survived by her mother Jane D. Brown of Pittsboro; sisters Kathie Brown of Upper Black Eddy, PA, Nancy Brown of Pittsboro; brother, Dr. William Brown and nephews David and Nicholas Brown of Amherst, VA.
A memorial celebration will be planned at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Aids Service Agency of Orange County and the Nature Conservancy.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.
BARBARA HART CAMPBELL
ROCKY MOUNT -- Barbara Hart Campbell, died Sunday in New Bern at the age of 87. She was a native of Jacksonville, FL and had been a resident in Rocky Mount for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Dr. Walter E. Campbell, D.D.S.; US Navy Retired.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by her sons, Walter Edward Campbell, Jr. of New Bern, Robert Hart Campbell of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Kimberly Campbell Huddle of New Bern, Katlin Hart Takakura Campbell of Sarasota; great-grandchildren, Katherine Campbell Huddle and Jack Clinkscales Huddle.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with Reverends Bolin Millner and Charles Penick officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Carleton House following the service.

MANDY DENT
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Amanda "Mandy" Dent, of 1804 Louise St., was born in Wake County on March 8, 1910. After a very long illness she departed this life on Friday, January 29, 1999. Funeral service to be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, at Grace AME Zion Church. Burial follows in Carolina Biblical Gardens.
She was retired from Watson Poultry.
Mandy leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter, Catherine Nichols of Raleigh; son, Otis Dent III of Raleigh; one sister-in-law, Mozzell Christmas of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends.
Wake will be at the Haywood Funeral Home, 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.
OZELLA POPE HALL MAY 26, 1913-FEB. 1, 1999
GARNER -- Ozella Pope Hall, 85, of 8070 White Oak Road, died Monday at Rex Hospital.
Graveside service 3 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
Surviving: daughter, Judy Strother of Garner; sons, Troy "Tip" Hall of Garner and Dennis Ray Hall of Wendell; sisters, Lela Turlington of Coats, Letha Harmon of Dunn; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James V. Hall and a son, Jimmy Hall.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, 7-9 p.m. today and at other times at the home.
ALMA B. HINES
SELMA -- Alma Batten Hines, age 88, a retired lunchroom employee at Selma Elementary School, died Monday in Rocky Mount. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are: a sister, Ruth Batten Thomas of Rocky Mount; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday morning from 10-11 a.m., immediately preceding the service.

FUQUAY-VARINA -- John Douglas Johnson, 57 of Fuquay-Varina died Sunday, January 31, 1999.

LUCILLE W. JONES OCT. 4, 1915-FEB. 1, 1999
SMITHFIELD -- Lucille Whitley Jones, age 83 died early Monday morning following a period of failing health. She was the widow of Bolton W. Jones who died Dec. 7, 1998.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pisgah Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving, sons, Bolton W. Jones Jr. of Woodbury, Conn. and J. Bryan Jones of Mechanicsville, Virginia; brothers, Alton Whitley and Ernest Whitley of Smithfield; grandchildren, Nancy Lucille Jones, Margaret Church Jones and Bolton William Jones III.
