Bedford D. Hill
ROUGEMONT – The funeral for Bedford David Hill Jr., 59, of 6305 Bahama Rd., Rougemont, who died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Dec. 1, in Timberlake Baptist Church by the Rev. Harold McNab and the Rev. Chris Sorenson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hill was a native of Durham County, the son of the late Bedford D. and Lena Mae Cox Hill.
He was employed with Nortel.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Price Hill; a son, Bedford David (Dave) Hill III of Durham; two daughters, Lisa H. Howerton and Maggie H. Drumwright, both of Rougemont; two brothers, Douglas D. Hill of Moneta, Va. and Fred Hill of Roxboro; three sisters, Barbara H. Evans of Durham, Rena Hill of Kernersville and Mary H. Samuels of Hope, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Mickey Drumwright, George Howerton, Austin Drumwright and Trey Drumwright.

Althea W. Miller
HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – The funeral for Althea Welch Miller, 77, of 106 Allen Dr., Hendersonville, Tenn., who died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in her home, will be conducted at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Bryan-Lee Funeral Home chapel in Angier. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Angier.
Mrs. Miller was a native of Person County.
Surviving are her husband, Buell D. Miller; a sister, Dot Vaughan of Angier; and a brother, Godwin Welch of Fuquay-Varina.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Dot Vaughan, 664 Tippett Dr., Angier.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Thomas W. Oakley
MILTON – A graveside funeral for Thomas Wayne Oakley, 39, of 30 William Barker Rd., who died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 3 p.m., today, Dec. 1, in the Holbrook Family Cemetery.
Mr. Oakley was a native of Halifax County, Va., the son of Daisey H. Koch of Milton, who survives, and the late Russell Thomas Oakley.
He was formerly employed with K.D. Pool Clearing and Grading.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his his grandparents, Ivory and Ruby Oakley of Granville County; three brothers, Michael Earl Oakley of Semora, John Lee Oakley of Oxford and Kenneth Rodney Koch of Milton; and a step-sister, Loretta Lynn Nelson of Pelham; and a companion, Bonnie Faye Wrenn.
Pallbearers will be William Glenn Clayton, Bruce Wayne Holbrook, Floyd Mitchell Holbrook Jr., Boyd Chambers, Steve Saunders and Hank Williams.

Jessie B. Painter
The funeral for Jessie Bill Painter, 63, of 2242 Dink Ashley Rd., who died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in Duke University Medical Center, was conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 30, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Elder Jimmy Gray. Burial was in the Painter Family Cemetery.
Mr. Painter was a native of Person County, the son of the late William Weldon and Roxie Long Painter.
He was a retired mechanic.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Medders Painter; two daughters, Audrey P. Potts of Rougemont and Amy P. Young of Timberlake; a son, Billy Painter of Rougemont; a brother, Onzlow Painter of Durham; two sisters, Lelia P. Pennington and Pauline P. Cash, both of Timberlake; seven grandchildren, Kim Potts, Adam Potts, Brooke Young, Megan Young, Candice Young, Randall Painter and Chris Painter.
Pallbearers were Richard Cash, Curtis Cash, Bobby Painter, Danny Painter, Jerry Painter, Sammy Westbrooks, Jason Howerton and Greg Dean.
Ruby S. Rogers
SUMMIT, N. J. – The funeral for Ruby Smith Rogers, formerly of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 in Summit, N.J., following a lengthy illness, will be conducted at 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2 in New Jersey.
Mrs. Rogers was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Alberta McCain Smith.
She was a member of Old Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Shelby R. Wilkerson and Betty R. Wilkerson, both of Scotch Plains, N.J.; a son, Carnell Rogers of Queens Village, N.Y.; a sister, Geneva Smith Mitchell of Baltimore, Md.;and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Judkins Colonial Home of Plainsfield, N.J.
W. Marshall Chandler
The funeral for William Marshall Chandler, 70, of Satellite Beach, Fla., who died at his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2001, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. James H. Chandler. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Chandler was a native of Person County, the son of the late James Henderson and Emma Allen Chandler.
He was retired from Harris Corp., where he was a senior electronics engineer.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force.
He was an active member of Central Baptist Church in Melbourne, Fla., where he translated for the deaf. He worked for CITA missions, and he was a member of the 700 Club.
Surviving are two brothers, J. B. Chandler of Timberlake and Elliott Chandler of Roxboro.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Burley W. Denny
CLARKSVILLE, Va. – The funeral for Burley Watkins Denny, 67,who died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Va., will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 28, in Clarksville Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Denny Family Cemetery.
Mr. Denny was retired from McLean Trucking Co., where he was a supervisor. After retirement, he operated Denny’s Antiques.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran.
He was a member of Clarksville Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Powell Denny; a daughter, Donna Creekmore; a son, Burley Matthew Denny; five sisters, Lott Sherman, Louise Sherman, Christine Mangum, Thelma Cannady and Fannie Sue Morris; a brother, Eursy Denny; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Clarksville Baptist church and the Mecklenburg County Rescue Squad.
Odell B. Denny
LEASBURG – The funeral for Odell Brann Denny, 90, of 6614 U.S. 158 East, who died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Sherrie James. Burial will be in the Leasburg Community Cemetery.
Mrs. Denny was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Charlie Jack and Jenny Brooks Duncan Brann. Her late husband was Dorsey M. Denny.
Surviving are three daughters, Imogene Denny Lunsford of Mebane, Nell Denny Winstead of Danville, Va. and Hazel Denny Winstead of Kannapolis; a son, Dorsey Mitchell Denny Jr. of Leasburg; six sisters, Onie B. Idol, Clara B. May and Lottie B. Oakes, all of Greensboro, Mebane B. Briggs of Leasburg, Lorene B. Sykes of St. James City, Fla. and Orene B. Brann of Semora; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mark T. Winstead, Carl G. Winstead, Marshall E. Lunsford, Jason T. Winstead, Larry Briggs, Jimmy Briggs, Percey (Junior) Brann and Stephens Tatum.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight, March 28, at Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel.

Anna H. Gilliland
The funeral for Anna Christine Hall Gilliland, 98, of Roxboro Nursing Center and formerly of 141 Providence Rd., who died Monday morning, March 26, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 28, in Strickland Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark Sterling. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Gilliland was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Nason Richard and Sally Puryear Hall. Her late husband was George Wesley Gilliland.
Surviving are three sisters, Theresa H. Lane, Odessa H. Dunkley and Ivee H. Long, all of Roxboro; a grandson, Kyle Gilliland of Pflugerville, Texas and a great-grandson, Ryan Gilliland of Pflugerville.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Dickerson, Fred Fox Jr., Burley Hamlett, Aaron Long, Wesley Long and Brad Suitt.
Honorary pallbearers will be Meredith Clayton, Fred Fox, Elwood Harris and Allen Watts.
George Hite
The funeral for George (Nickie) Hite, 48, of 46056 Boston Rd., who died Friday evening, March 23, 2001, in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh following a sudden illness, was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 26, in Strickland Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial was in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Hite was a native of Person County, the son of the late John O. and Myrtle Lester Hite.
He was a carpenter.
He was a member of Montwood Baptist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, Owen Hite and Wayne Hite, both of Roxboro; and a sister, Linda H. Proffitt of Mineral Springs, Va.
Pallbearers were Merritt Bowes, David Fox, Huel Puryear, Mike Jones, Roger Harris, Duke Grady and Clayton Meadows.
Cleo F. James
A graveside funeral for Cleo Frances James, 84, of 524 S. Lamar St., who died Friday, March 23, 2001, in her home, was conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in Burchwood Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Wallace Kirby.
Mrs. James was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Ivey Lester and Sue Clayton James.
She was retired from Person Furniture Co.
She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a brother, A. P. James of Durham; two nephews, Dal Rhodes and James Rhodes, both of Roxboro; and two nieces, Sue R. Gentry of Roxboro and Mary Leslie J. Butler of Fairfield, Conn.
Pallbearers were Belvin Gentry, Robbie Gentry, Ted Michie, Clay Tuck, Claiborne Tuck, William Dallas and Bob Morgan.

Bernard L. McKay
The funeral for Bernard Lewis McKay, 39, of 3996 Allensville Rd., who died suddenly Monday, March 26, 2001, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dennis McDonald.
Mr. McKay was a native of Person County, the son of Alvin Gregory and Virginia Roach McKay of Roxboro, who survive.
He was employed with Gold Kist Poultry.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Gwen Whitt McKay; three daughters, Morgan McKay, Megan McKay and Makayla McKay, all of the home; a sister, Lisa McKay Elliott of Roxboro; and two nephews, Derrick Walker and Daniel Walker, both of Roxboro.
Pallbearers will be Walter McKay, Fred McKay Jr., Ricky Roach, Mark Ashley, Clint Roach, Eddie Rowland and Dale Roach.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Gold Kist.
