GREGORY SCOTT SMITH
Services will be held for Greg Smith on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007.
Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m at Carlisle Funeral Home in Tarboro.
The graveside service will follow immediately at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Crowe officiating.
Greg will be interred alongside his mother, Faye Piland Smith. Greg died on Dec. 11 at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, Calif.
He was 51 years old. His two aunts, Ellen Dewey and Gwen Conner were at his side when he passed, along with his close friends from Santa Cruz, Mrs. C.N. Gordon and Jill de Vos.
Born in Tarboro on July 21, 1956, Greg was a graduate of Tarboro High School.
In his mid-20s, he moved to Santa Cruz to be closer to his brother, who lived in the area.
From 1985 to the time of his passing, Greg was a Xerox service engineer.
He was a devoted son to his mother, who predeceased him in 2006.
Greg was also predeceased by his father, Stephen Ellis Smith in 1959 and his only sibling, Stephen Randall Smith in 2001.
Greg is survived by two aunts, Gwen Conner of Tarboro and Ellen Dewey of Norfolk, Va.; his uncle, Danny Piland of Jacksonville, Fla.; six cousins, Charles Dewey of North Redington Beach, Fla., Bobbi Annino of Atlanta, Ga., Patricia Purvis of Asheville, Steve and Brandon Hale of Tarboro, and Ralph Piland Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, at Santa Cruz Bible Church in Santa Cruz, Calif., which will be followed by a reception in the Worship Center foyer.

EMMA JEAN SPEIGHT
Emma Jean Speight, 74, of Queens, N.Y. died on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007 in Queens.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Saint Peter Disciples of Christ Church in Farmville with the Rev. Charlie Williams officiating.
Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Garden.
A viewing will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Saint Peter Disciples of Christ Church.
Survivors include her husband, Roosevelt Speight, of the home; a son, Edwin Speight of Bath, N.Y.; a daughter, Mamie Ashley of Hempstead, N.Y.; two brothers, James B. Williams of Farmville and Charlie Williams of Uniondale, N.Y.

ROBERT LEE DUPREE
Robert Lee Dupree, 90, of Greenville died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007 at his home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reid Chapel Baptist Church in Fountain with the Rev. Alvin Hyman officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Farmville.
A wake will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Lee Dupree, of the home; two sons, James T. Dupree and John Robert Dupree, both of Norwalk, Conn.; three daughters, Minnie Edwards, Lucille Gay and Louvenia Ford, all of Greenville.

OLIVER MAX GARDNER
Oliver Max Gardner passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville with his children and grandchildren at his bedside, after an extended illness.
Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Edgecombe Memorial Park.
Max was born April 8, 1925 and raised near Saratoga in Wilson County where he was educated and graduated from Saratoga High School.
He was raised in the Saratoga First Christian Church, and later became a member of Edgewood Free Will Baptist Church for many years.
The past 23 years he spent as a member of Macclesfield First Christian Church.
In 1945, he married
Ethel Taylor who remained his loving and faithful wife until her death in 2004.
He was a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany.
He later remained an active participant of many World War II reunions.
Max farmed for many years after coming home from the war.
He also worked for Clark Industries and W.S. Clark in Tarboro and Williamston for many years until his retirement about 10 years ago.
His hobbies included gardening and yard work with hundreds of azaleas and fruit trees keeping him busy outside as much as possible.
He also enjoyed traveling, having ventured to New York City, the North Carolina mountains, as well as Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas and Indiana.
In addition to his beloved wife, Max was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Hazel Nichols Gardner and is survived by a loving family that includes his son, Oliver Max Gardner Jr. and wife, Gwen, of Tarboro; his daughter, Judy G. Morgan of Macclesfield; two grandchildren, Byron Gardner and wife, Suzanne, of Tarboro and Casey Gardner Christian and husband, Joe, of Belville; two great-granddaughters, Reagan and Parker Christian; sisters-in-law, Martha Etheridge and L.G. Etheridge of Wilson, Hazel Taylor of Macclesfield and Elaine Taylor of Pinetops; brother-in-law, Tom Taylor and wife, Judy of Savannah, Ga.; extended family, Paul and Melissa Drake and family, Pam Parrisher and family and Susan Morgan and family, along with many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to visit the family from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2448 Carr Farm Road, Macclesfield.

MARY MERCER
Mary Mercer, 88, of Rocky Mount died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007 at LifeCare Hospitals of North Carolina in Rocky Mount.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Association Center in Pinetops with the Rev. Elder Cherry officiating.
Burial will follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery in Pinetops.
A viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Saturday at Hemby-Willoughby Mortuary in Tarboro.
Survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

LOUIS LAWRENCE
Louis Lawrence, 60, of Tarboro, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church near Leggett, with the Rev. Robert Farmer officiating.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Sarah Lawrence of the home; two sisters Sarah Wishop of Scotland Neck and Ola Pittman of Tarboro; four brothers, James McCoy Lawrence and Elder Frank Lawrence, both of Bronx, N.Y., William Earl Lawrence of Baltimore, Md., and Robert Lee Lawrence of the home.
A viewing will be from 2-6 p.m. today , and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at Dickens Funeral Services in Tarboro.
