Ruth Mason Shirley, 89 died Saturday, November 22,2008
Funeral service will be held Tuesday 2:00 PM at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Wilson & Rev. Caswell Shaw officiating.
Burial will follow in Edgecombe Memorial Park.
Mrs. Shirley was preceded in death by her first husband, John Mason and a sister, Anne Jones.

Tempie Rideout Knox

Tempie Gay Rideout Knox, 100, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 18, 2008 at the Golden Living Center where she had been a resident for six weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, Nov. 21 in the chapel of Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jessie Blalock officiating.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Knox was born Aug. 27, 1908 on the old Pittman Plantation in Whitakers to James A. & Blanche Mincher Rideout.
She grew up in Tarboro and attended Bridgers School.
She began work at the age of 14 at Hart Mills in Tarboro, working there until her marriage to Tom Knox in 1938.
She attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church and loved working in her vegetable gardens, sharing produce with friends and neighbors.
Tempie was a wonderful cook, specializing in delicious pineapple and coconut cakes.
She could often be heard singing at the top of her voice while working busily among her plants.
Tempie indeed possessed a unique and independent personality, having lived in her own home until this past October.
In addition to her parents and husband, Tempie was preceded in death by an infant son; sisters, Lillie Rideout Gurganus, Blanche Rideout Roberson, and Mary Joyner Andrews; brothers, Johnny Rideout and Amos Hall “Biddie” Rideout; along with several half-siblings.
She is survived by her dear nephew, Tommy Andrews of Fla.;
and nieces, Jean Roberson Denton of Tarboro & Phyllis Roberson Hoots of Winston-Salem, all of whom loved their Aunt Tempie dearly.
Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews in Virginia and Winston-Salem, along with her very special friends, Billy & Jean Trevathan of Tarboro.
Friends are invited to visit the family at Carlisle Funeral Home, Fri., Nov. 21, beginning at 1:00 PM, prior to the service.
Much appreciation is given by the family to Milly Whitley, Elizabeth Brown, and Brenda Creech for their kindness and care of Tempie in her last years at home.
She very much appreciated them.
