Ray Smith
CASAR — Mr. David Ray Smith, 59, of 307 Turner Road, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born May 21, 1946. He was an apartment maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Casar Masonic Lodge #579, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Oasis Shrine Temple of Charlotte and the Fort Lauderdale Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Madison Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Inez Causby Smith; mother, Opal Virginia Mincey Carswell; three brothers, J.R. Smith of Casar, Dean Smith of Morganton and Grady Smith of Bostic; five sisters, Jean McCraw, Virginia Smith and Ellen Billings, all of Morganton, and Elizabeth Parker and Faye McFarland, both of Casar; and a special pet, Amy the Pug.
The family will receive friends at the home Monday. There will be no funeral.

Ruby Tessneair
CAROLEEN — Mrs. Ruby Hollifield Tessneair, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at her home.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Caroleen Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Charles Evans and Tim Evans officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.
Bill McKillop
PALM BAY, FLA. — Mr. William Richard McKillop, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Carnegie Gardens Nursing Home in Melbourne, Fla.
The family will be at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Gail McKillop, at 1815 Arbour Way Drive.

Howard Zuhlke
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Howard Harry Zuhlke, 84, of 926 N. Granard St., died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at home.
He was married to the late Edna Cathey Zuhlke. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., and was the son of the late Harry A. and Anna Duemmel Zuhlke.
He attended Gospel Light Christian Fellowship. He served in the Army in World War II, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Battle Star.
He is surived by one daughter, Sylvia Z. Stewart of Lawndale; one grandson, Craig Hamrick and wife, Andrea, of Shelby; three great-grandchildren, McKenzie Hamrick, Clayton Hamrick and Leanna Hamrick, all of Shelby; and one sister, Beatrice Z. Nash of Rochester.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at White Columns of Gaffney.
A celebration of life service will follow at Oakland Cemetery at 2 p.m. with Dr. Clyde P. Thomas Jr. officiating.
At other times the family will be at their respective homes.
Mr. Zuhlke may be remembered with memorials to the hurricane relief or to the church or charity of one’s choice.
Allen Hoyle
LAWNDALE — Mr. Allen Thomas Hoyle, 46, of 1409 W. Stagecoach Trail, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born June 7, 1959. He was the manager of the Pine Grove Golf Club. He was a member of Palm Tree United Methodist Church and a member of the Pine Grove Men’s Golf Association.
Preceding him in death were his father, Miles Fred “M.F.” Hoyle Jr.; a brother, Larry Charles Hoyle; and father-in-law, M.A. Fortenbury.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Cindy Fortenbury Hoyle, of the home; his mother, Martha Clarice Reichard Hoyle, of Lawndale; three daughters, Amanda, Ashley and Allison Hoyle, all of the home; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Miles and Debra Hoyle, Marvin and Kitty Hoyle and Reggie Hoyle, all of Lawndale; a sister and brother-in-law, Kim and John Laughlin of Lawndale; mother-in-law, Martha Fortenbury of Fallston; special friends, Tim, April and Stephanie Powell, and the late Libby Powell.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Palm Tree United Methodist Church, with Dr. Randy Bridges and the Revs. Ellen Harkey and Paul Williams officiating.
Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Izene Lail
SHELBY — Mrs. Eulah Izene Wright Lail, 86, of 1534 N. Post Road, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Carolina Care Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born Aug. 19, 1919. She was the widow of the late A.V. Lail and daughter of the late John L. Wright and Nora Grigg Wright. She was employed as a cutter and seamstress at Lail’s Upholstery. She was a member of the nondenominational protestant church.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Verda Wright, Velma McSwain and Connie Yarborough; and two brothers, J.S. Wright and Onley Wright.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, LaMorris and Gail Lail of Shelby; two brothers, Stough Wright of Grover and W.G. Wright of Ellenboro; four sisters, Elsie Hoyle of Shelby, Mary Etta Spain of Grover, Leah Fortenberry of Ellenboro and Recca Grigg of Shelby; four grandchildren, Lisa Baugham and husband, Terry, Travis Lail and wife, Sarah, Angela Carswell and husband, Frank, and Candy Wright and husband, Rick; nine great grandchildren, Jeffrey Baugham, Chad Baugham, Joshua Baugham, Jonathan Baugham, Zach Bridges, Kilian Lail, Aiden Lail, Stephanie Wright and Emily Wright; and one great-great-grandchild, Gage Baugham.
The funeral is today at 5 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.
Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

Martha Radford
CLIFFSIDE — Mrs. Martha Scruggs Radford, 83, of 421 Chesterfield Road, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at home.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Chesterfield and Thelma Freeman Scruggs. She retired from Cone Mills Cliffside Plant and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Hubert Radford of the home; one daughter, Janet Solomon of Cliffside; two brothers, Marion Scruggs of Mooresboro and Herbert Scruggs of Bostic; two sisters, Geneva Beason of Cramerton and Dot Wall of Cliffside; two grandchildren, Ashley Solomon and Stephanie Center; and four great-grandchildren, Zachery Center, Savanna Center, Taylor Solomon and Kaitlyn Solomon.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ernie Cole officiating. Burial will follow in Cliffside Cemetery.

SHELBY — Mrs. Rubye Reynolds Terrell, 95, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, formerly of 231 Edgewood St., Boiling Springs, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

BOSTIC — Mr. Thomas Brown, 86, of 898 Andrew Mills Road, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Hospice of Rutherford County.

Nerva Brown
SHELBY — Mrs. Nerva Jane Smith Brown, 78, of 2422, Elizabeth Ave., died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at home.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the tenth child of the late Jim and Lindy Smith. Mrs. Brown was a retired cook who worked for Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory for 20 years. She retired from Don’s Pancake House in Shelby. She was a member of Williford Temple and was affectionately known as “Mother Brown.”
Mrs. Brown loved cooking and it was a joy for her to see people eating what she cooked. She was very family oriented and stressed to her family about staying close to one another. She also loved flowers, especially roses and her crepe myrtles.
She was married for 68 years to the late Houston Brown, who preceded her in death earlier this year. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Brown and Samuel Brown ; one grandson, Troy Parrish; five brothers; and five sisters.
She is survived by fours sons, Steve Brown (Diane) of Shelby, Joe Brown of Shelby, Calvin Brown (Valerie) of Kings Mountain and Sylvester Brown of Shelby; five daughters, Pauline Parrish of Shelby, Betty Stroud (Robert) of Shelby, Rebecca Gamble of Bessemer City, Ann Mauney of Shelby and Sandra Wilson (Clifford) of Shelby; 38 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great grandchildren; a special niece, Dorletha Grantt of Buffalo, N.Y.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Williford Temple Holiness Church, with Bishop Andrew Williford officiating. Burial will take place in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Martin Logan
LAKE LURE — Mr. Martin Logan, 63, of 197 Piney Creek Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Hospice of Rutherford County.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Baptist Church at Lake Lure, with the Rev. E. Waters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

James Wright
FALLSTON — Mr. James Odus Wright, 68, of 316 Wilson Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Greenville County, S.C., he was a son of the late Odus Andrew Wright and the late Fannie Ross Wright. He was employed with B.A.S.F. in textile colors and chemicals for 36 years. He had served with the Army Reserves and was a member of Fallston Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Gambrell Wright; two sons, Jamie Wright of Fort Mill, S.C., and T. Andrew Wright of Fallston.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p. m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Tim Elmore and Scott Norton presiding. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.
