Robert Kinlow Jr.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Robert Kinlow Jr., 89, formerly of 1943 Cherryville Road, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.

A native of Chester County, S.C., he was born July 18, 1913, a son of the late Robert Sr. and Charlotte Cunningham Kinlow. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, where he was the oldest deacon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Kinlow and William Kinlow, and five sisters, Sarah Stover, Alice Hammond, Pearl Banks, Estelle Maddox and Mozzelle Young.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Fallie Brooks Kinlow; a son, Billie Joe “Rickie” Brooks of the home; a special son, Johnny Brooks (Ann) of Cherryville; a granddaughter, Ashley Mungro of the home; five sisters, Georgia Jeffries of Cherryville, Willie Mae Cumberlander of Waco, Curlee Lee Clemons of Statesville, Ella Frances Cunningham of Lincolnton and Kathrine Balder of Greensboro; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roger Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Thursday an hour before the service.

Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Marshall Brooks

SHELBY — Mr. Marshall Hazel Brooks, 83, of 1520 W. Cabaniss Road, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Holly Springs Senior Citizen Home in Rutherfordton.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Mattison and Amelia Hamrick Brooks. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a carpenter, homebuilder and farmer. He was a lifelong member and former deacon of Double Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Winona Thelma Hendrick Brooks; four brothers, Grady, Elijah, Everette and Elmer Brooks; 10 sisters, Cora B. Jenkins, Carra B. Grigg, Laura B. Gold, Eula B. McSwain, Docia B. McSwain, Eunice May Brooks, Eliza B. Greene, Edna Irene Brooks, Verna B. Scism and Lois B. Cabiness.

He is survived by a son, Tony Marshall Brooks and wife, Tammy, of Shelby; three daughters, the Rev. Priscilla B. Walker and husband, Richard, of Shelby, Marsha B. Putnam and husband, Stephen, of Chantilly, Va., and Myra B. Upton and husband, Blaine, of Rutherfordton; a sister, Susan B. Lee of Shelby; nine grandchildren, Matt Walker and wife, Chris, Lee Walker and wife, Starr, Tyler Brooks, Olivia Brooks and Eli Brooks, all of Shelby, Jason Putnam of Chantilly, Travis Putnam of Winston-Salem and Amelia and Maggie Katherine Upton, both of Rutherfordton; four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Madison, Javan and Jaden Walker, all of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral is today at 4 p.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. Brint Hilliard and C. A. Kirby officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, with military honors by the Army.

The family will receive friends at the home of Tony Brooks, 1222 Cherry Mountain Road, Shelby.

Eula Frye

RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Eula Simmons Frye, 96, of 237 Tryon Road, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center.

A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Mose and Mamie Ramsey Simmons. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church and St. James United Methodist Church in Raleigh.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl P. Frye Sr.

She is survived by one son, Carl P. Frye Jr. of Shelby.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Buddy Morehead officiating. A graveside service will be Monday at Montlawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Michael Gast officiating.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 746 Trinity Church Road, Mooresboro, NC 28114.

Martha McConnell

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Martha Reynolds McConnell, 81, of 804 Linwood Road, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at White Oak Manor.

Born in York County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Walter Reynolds and Caroline Long Reynolds. She retired from Lance Cracker Co. in Charlotte after 30 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Carlton McConnell; a son, Freddie Carlton McConnell; four brothers, John Reynolds, Howard Reynolds, Warren Reynolds and Robert Reynolds; and three sisters, Ethel Crawford, Pearl Davidson and Ruth Reynolds.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home of a nephew, Tony and Kathy Davidson, 109 Kimberly Lane, Kings Mountain.

Dora Blanton

SHELBY — Mrs. Dora Ann “Squaw” McDaniel Blanton, 67, of 934 W. Warren St., died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover.

Born in York County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James Floyd McDaniel Sr. and Annie Harmon McDaniel. She was formerly employed by Dover Mill and Cleveland Drug Store. She was a member of Second Baptist Church and was a past president of the Shelby AMVETS Auxiliary. She loved working with many types of arts and crafts and always looked forward to the Cleveland County Fair.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Jim “Bones” Blanton, and a brother, James F. McDaniel Jr.

She is survived by her stepmother, Lottie Patton McDaniel of Rock Hill, S.C.; a son, Mark Dean Putnam and wife, Kimberly, of Cherryville; two brothers, Edd R. McDaniel and wife, Carol, of Yuma, Ariz., and Preston F. McDaniel and wife, Susan, of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Mary Lou M. Valentine of Harrisburg; a sister-in-law, Mildred L. McDaniel of Lincolnton; a grandson, Brandon Ramsey of Cherryville; four nieces, Manette Howard, and Sharon, Susan and Katie McDaniel; and two nephews, Michael and Tripp McDaniel.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Reggie Dawkins officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

O. C. Turner

CASAR — Mr. O. C. Turner, 82, of 251 Clelo Road, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover.

Born April 26, 1923, in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Clelo Turner and Zennie Waters Turner. He retired from Broyhill Furniture Manufacturer’s Rutherford plant. He was an active member of Mount Moriah United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, his cattle, country living and serving the Lord.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewey Turner and Winsow Turner; a sister, Mae Turner; and a daughter-in-law, Beulah Turner.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Cordia Jeanette Butler Turner; three beloved sons and their wives, Roger and Donna Turner of Bostic and J.C. and Janet Turner and Gene Turner, all of Casar; two sisters, Vernette Cook of Casar and Versie Whisnant of Morganton; seven grandchildren and their spouses who were the joy of his life, Rick and Sherry Canipe of Macon, Ga., Lori Allen, Brian and Kristy Houser and Melody Turner, all of Casar, Carrie and Danny Howell of Cherryville, Dena Turner of Shelby and Colby Turner of Shiloh; 13 great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kelly Ottinger officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Herb Combs Jr.

SHELBY — Mr. Herbert Cranford Combs Jr., 63, of 201 Worthington St., died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at home.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Herbert C. Combs Sr. and Minna LeGrand Combs. He served in the Army and was self-employed in private law practice, specializing in real estate law and probate law. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Law School. He was a lifelong member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, past president of the Cleveland County Bar Association and a member of the Shelby Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Lindquist-Combs of the home; a brother, Torrance LeGrand Combs of Shelby; and two sisters, Fain Combs Maag of Greenville, S.C., and Gay Combs Suttle of Pawley’s Island, S.C.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Luke Harkey officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church Saturday immediately following the service.

Derrick Goodson

SHELBY — Mr. Derrick Andre Goodson, 26, of 141 Eagle’s Nest Way, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Charles and Edna Hamrick of Shelby.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Evans Logan, Charles Hamrick Sr. and Elizabeth Goodson; and two special friends, Julian Tyuan Roseboro and Marjuan Huskey.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Vickie Hamrick of Shelby; four daughters, Sheretta Roseboro, Ny’Drea Goodson and Lahanti Byrd, all of Shelby, and DeAsia Goodson of Kings Mountain; special nephew, Jy’juan Eskridge of Shelby; two godsons, Dah’Sha Moore and Omar Washington, both of Shelby; two brothers, Kevin Wilson of Shelby and Marcus Goodson of Charlotte; three sisters, Angel Fullove (Roderick) of Waco and Tangela and Tiffany Hamrick, both of Shelby; grandmother, Earnestine Hamrick of Shelby; one special aunt, Garnell Gilliard; and a host of other aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ellis Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ray Lockhart Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Brenda Mason

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Brenda Mintz Mason, 51, of 5075 Pennington Place, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at home.

The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Gethsemane Holiness Church. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Saturday an hour before the service.

Nancy Frazier

BATON ROUGE, La. — Mrs. Nancy Waddell Frazier, of 10333 Springbrook Ave., formerly of Shelby, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, as a result of an automobile accident.

A memorial service was held Sept. 8 in Baton Rouge.
