Martha Moore
SHELBY — Mrs. Martha “Aunt Mot” Moore, 79, of 1936 Burke Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Virgil Thrift and Anna Bell Price Thrift. She was retired from Lily Mill and was a homemaker. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Thrift, Ralph Thrift and Howard Thrift, and a sister, Nellie Rea McSwain.
She is survived by her husband, Horace Moore of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Moore Morgan and husband, Jim, of Albemarle and Louise Lancaster and husband, Gary, of Shelby; a brother, Jake Thrift of Rutherfordton; two sisters, Beatrice Jones of Shelby and Bonnie Roundtree of Barnwell, S.C.; four grandchildren, Dwayne Morgan, Jeff Collins, Getera Carpenter and Anita Donath; six great-grandchildren, Katie Morgan, Mallory Collins, Clint Carpenter, Candice Carpenter, Keith Carpenter and Jesse Pearson; and a great-great-grandchild, Bryson Pearson.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Chris Wray, Ed Sessom and Keith Dixon officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at the home.

Michael Barnett
BESSEMER CITY — Mr. Michael A. Barnett, 57, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.
The family will be at the home of Bobby and Alline Feemster, 703 S. Skyland Drive, Bessemer City.

Dwight Fortenberry
MORGANTON — Mr. Dwight H. Fortenberry, 82, of Enola Road, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Grace Hospital, following a period of declining health.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home, with Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Casar.
The family will receive friends Thursday an hour before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Linda and Tony Smith, 1991 Enola Road, Morganton.
Lula Patrick
BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Lula Elizabeth Phillips Patrick, 89, of 420 S. Main St., died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at home.
Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Victor Phillips and Ena Mae Hicks Phillips. She attended Boiling Springs Junior College and received her bachelor’s degree from Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Later, she received her master’s. She was a teacher and principal in Cleveland County Schools, Shelby City Schools and Gaffney schools. She was also Cleveland County’s first woman magistrate and a businesswoman extraordinaire. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theron J. Patrick.
She is survived by a cousin, David Hicks of Boiling Springs; an adopted son, Roger Littlejohn and wife, Faye; and many family and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, with the Rev. William A. Stroud officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends Thursday an hour before the service at the funeral home.

BOSTIC — Mr. Sherman Kyle Snook, 21, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, in Asheville.
A memorial service will be Friday at 5 p.m. at Crowe’s Mortuary Chapel.
The family will receive friends Friday immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Melissa Hendee
SHELBY — Mrs. Melissa Boggs Hendee, 42, of 1410 Stonegate Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born in Gassaway, W. Va., she was a daughter of Roscoe Boggs of Big Otter, W. Va., and Evelyn Delaney Boggs of Shelby. She graduated from Allegany Community College with an associate degree in dental hygiene. She formerly worked for John Crossland DDS and in recent years was a homemaker. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was an avid golfer, was active as a fund-raiser for Relay for Life and was a Sunday school volunteer. She was former president of the Ingomar Child Enrichment Center at Ingomar United Methodist Church in Pennsylvania.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 22 years, Bruce Hendee; a son, Nicholas Hendee of the home; a daughter, Allison Hendee of the home; two brothers, Brent Boggs and wife, Lynn, of West Virginia and Chris Boggs and wife, Yvonne, of South Carolina; and a sister, Jane Boggs of New Jersey.
The funeral is tonight at 7 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jeff Patterson and the Revs. Sally Queen and Elizabeth Minus officiating. Burial is private for the family.
The family will receive friends at the church in the Epworth Building today from 4:30 to 6:30.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Jack Edward Denton, 74, of 102 N. Calles St., died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Magnolia Place in Spartanburg, S.C.

GASTONIA — Mr. Otis Earl Kelley, 70, of 3320 S. York Road, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

‘Junior’ Jackson
SHELBY — Mr. Jacob “Junior” Jackson, 81, of 505 Martin St., died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Bishopville, S.C., he was born April 9, 1924, and was the son of the late Alexander Bradford and Julia Bishop Jackson. He moved to Shelby at an early age. He was retired from the meat packing company in Hickory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Carrie Bradford, Hattie Guyton and Lillie B. Jackson; and five brothers, Eddie Bradford, Jackson Brown, Paul Jackson Sr., Theron Jackson and John Jackson.
He leaves to cherish a brother, Thomas A. Bradford (Jestine) of Detroit, Mich.; five sisters, Charlene B. Webber of Shelby and Willie Mae Wimbush, Kathleen Sloan, Annie Mae Smith and Mattie Lee Wimbush (Clyde), all of Detroit, Mich.; a brother-in-law, Clarence Guyton of Virginia; a best friend, Mattie M. Wright of Shelby; a step-daughter, Elizabeth Lee; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Gene Pryor officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Yvonne Watterson
SHELBY — Mrs. Yvonne Caudle Watterson, passed away Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover.
She was the daughter of the late Jimmie and Lois Owen Caudle. She was a graduate of Petersburg High School and attended Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary studying voice. Her training was in Petersburg with Mrs. Jane Ruan. She also studied with Dr. Bernard Taylor at the Juilliard School. While in Shelby, she attended Gardner-Webb College.
She was the minister of music at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va., and First Baptist Church of Crestview, Fla. She loved music and taught music for many years. She enjoyed reading and taught scripture memorization for 48 years and taught 4th grade Sunday school and was a member of the Cecilia Music Club. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, W.A. Caudle and James E. Caudle.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dr. Gene Watterson; two daughters, Pamela Yvonne Watterson Runyans and husband, Robert, and Lisa Dawn Watterson Johnson and husband, Michael, all of Raleigh; a son, Dr. Gene Watterson Jr. and wife, Ruth, of Birmingham, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Lt. Robert W. Runyans, US Army deployed in Iraq, Abigail Runyans of Chapel Hill, Camille Runyans, Thomas Johnson and Lillian Johnson, all of Raleigh, and Adelyn Watterson, Gene L. Watterson III, and Matthew Watterson, all of Birmingham, Ala.; three sisters, Evelyn C. Skinner, Mabel C. Hammer, and Jeanette C. Miller, all of Petersburg, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Hilda F. Caudle of Opelika, Ala., Dorothy H. Caudle of Petersburg, and Sandra Dunkle and husband, Dr. Richard, of Fredericksburg, Va; a brother-in-law, Dr. Douglas Watterson and wife, Janet, of Stewart, Fla.; a mother-in-law, Eva Watterson of Fredericksburg; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Main Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Shelby, with the Rev. Tony Tench and Dr. Douglas Watterson officiating. The family will receive friends at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 8:30.
A service will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Elm Street Baptist Church in Petersburg. Burial will follow in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg. The family will receive friends at Mayfield Plantation in Petersburg immediately following the service.

Robert Charpentier Sr.
SHELBY — Mr. Robert Arthur Charpentier Sr., 85, of 1416 N. Post Road, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Norwalk, Conn., he was a son of the late Arthur Moses Charpentier and Lenora Marie Charpentier. He was a master sergeant in the Army in World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a retired owner and operator of the New Englander Hotel and Restaurant, Westport Country Play House, Bantom Restaurants, Charpentier Restaurants and Frances Meat Market. He was also a key investor and general manager of several country clubs throughout the southeast and a business consultant in the food, beverage and hospitality industry. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, past member of the Food and Beverage Association, past member of Kiwanis and the Country Club Manager’s Association of America. He was first cousin to Henry Charpentier, the world-renowned master French chef who invented Crepes Suzette.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Hugh Fredrick “Ricky” Reynolds and Stephen Talmadge Reynolds.
He is survived by his wife, Julia “Judy” Queen Charpentier of the home; a son, Robert A. Chapentier Jr. and wife, Christina, of Shelby; two daughters, Suzanne Charpentier of Norwalk and Lei Lei Thier and husband, Peter, of Marlboro, Mass.; four grandchildren, Adam Bruce Charpentier, Amanda Michell Charpentier, Kija Josephine Palmer and Maddison Taylor Charpentier; two great-grandchildren, Jesse Boyd Nicholson IV and Sylvester Marshall Charpentier; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Charpentier of Norwalk.
A memorial service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Father Eric Houseknecht officiating. A graveside service will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.
The family will be at 3013 Arnold Drive, Shelby.
