Randy Childers
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Randy Ray Childers, 55, of 654 Dixon School Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Odus Ray Childers of Kings Mountain and Virginia Gilliam Monahan of Blackwater, Va. He was an accountant and a member of Dixon Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Catherine Dover Childers.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Ricky Childers of Rancho Murieta, Calif.; two uncles, James A. Childers and wife, Margaret, and Robert Childers and wife, Alda Faye, all of Kings Mountain; and two aunts, Mary Goforth and Annie Mae Berry and husband, Tom, all of Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, with the Revs. Randy Patterson and Alan Sinclair officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home.

Sarah Wells
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Sarah Watkins Wells, 88, of E. Main St., died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Hospice House.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Hughes Hobson, OSL, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday an hour before the service in the church parlor.

Michael Barnett
BESSEMER CITY — Mr. Michael Angelo Barnett, 58, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, with the Rev. Eddie Ponder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday 30 minutes before the service at the church.

INMAN, S.C. — Mr. Paul Edward Norville, 59, of Lakewinds Blvd., died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg, S.C.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, with military honors by the Rutherford County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home in Bostic.
Ruby Peeler
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Ruby Carrie Lee Strange Peeler, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005.
Born May 6, 1941, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Hugh B. and Sue Strange. She was always a busy woman, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. She loved her garden. She loved her children and formed a strong, loving relationship with each one. With the constant love and support of her family and friends, she was able to endure some of life’s most difficult challenges. She was most grateful to all of you.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Peeler; three brothers, Dillard, Jerry Lee and J. B. Strange; and two sisters, Mary Sue Ramsey and Marie Price.
She is survived by two daughters, Penny Peeler and fiancé, Michael Brantley and Elizabeth Joan Peeler; five brothers, Jim Strange, Billy Strange and wife, Helen, Bobby Strange and wife, Maybell, James “Gabby” Strange and wife, Rita, and Jack “Albert” Strange and wife, Jackie; a wonderful sister-in-law, Peggy Peeler Champion; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Gwen Lowery, “Her Sister.”
The family wishes to thank Dr. Thompson and staff at the Blumenthal Cancer Center in Shelby, Dr. Maddox and staff of the radiation department at the Blumenthal Cancer Center and hospice for their great care. A special thank you to nurse, Fran Moritz, for her strength and devotion.
A memorial service will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Archie Brown and Mrs. Gwen Lowery officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday an hour before the service at the funeral home.
Hildreth Cook
SHELBY — Mrs. Hildreth Vernie Wright Cook, 88, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born June 1, 1917, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Guy Wright and Amelia Norman Wright. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Lee Cook; a son, James Dean Cook; four brothers; and two sisters.
She is survived by a son, Don Cook and wife, Faye, of Shelby; a daughter, Marjorie Sain and husband, Charles, of Polkville; two sisters, Madeline Elliott of Waco and Stella Sellers of Fallston; two special sisters-in-law, Grace Wright of Shelby and Juanita Wright of Greer, S.C.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Timothy Sims officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday one and one half hours before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Marjorie Sain, 2005 W. Stagecoach Trail, Polkville.
Cleo Pearson
SHELBY — Mrs. Cleo Elizabeth Pearson, 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Cleveland County (Wash-ington Comm-unity), she was born March 8, 1915, a daughter of the late Sam Henderson Webber and Rossie Rudasill Webber. She attended Cleveland County public schools and joined Washington Baptist Church at an early age. She was an active member until marriage to John Henry Woods, when she moved to Shelby. She had three sons, John Henry, Ralph and Harry Lee, who have all preceded her in death.
She attended Shiloh Baptist Church and was active there until she became ill. She was a former member of the senior choir and a member of the Annie Jones Missionary Circle.
Long after the death of her first husband, she married J.C. Pearson, who was also a native of Shelby and again was widowed after many years of marriage. She retired from Cleveland Regional Medical Center in 1986 and then began working with the grandparenting program assisting children between the ages of 3 and 6. The children loved her dearly and they called her grandma, which made her very happy. She received many awards for her work and commitment to the program. She retired from the program in 1996 because of medical reasons.
She leaves to mourn two grandchildren, Ann and Porsha, both of Charlotte; a brother, Elisha Webber of Asheville; a sister, Verna Ricker (John) of Boston, Mass.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Washington Missionary Baptist Church in Waco, with the Rev. Denorris Byers officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorials Lawns.
The family will receive friends Friday 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home of J. D. Webber, 317 Hermon Homestead Road, Shelby.

Nancy Carpenter
LAWNDALE — Ms. Nancy Jo Carpenter, 63, of 111 Lariat Lane, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
A native of Lawndale, she was born July 29, 1942, a daughter of the late Sam Carpenter and Luecreasie Waller Carpenter. She was a member of Walls Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for more than 23 years and was also a member of the kitchen committee. She was retired from Peeler’s Florist in Fallston, where she worked for 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Roosevelt Carpenter; and two sisters, Sammie Lee Carpenter and Betty Phelps.
Left to cherish her memory is a brother, Tommie Carpenter of Fallston; three sisters, Dorothy Glover (Sanders) of Shelby, Betty Turner of Stuart, Va. and Patricia Nelson (Charles) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; an aunt, Lizzie Williams of Lawndale; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Walls Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday an hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Sanders Glover, 203 Plato Lee Road, Shelby.

Alma Elliott
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Alma Stroup Elliott, 103, formerly of W. Main St., died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Henderson Care Center, where she was a resident.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Barry K. Keys officiating. Burial will follow in Cool Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday an hour before the service in the church parlor and at other times at the home of a son, Robert H. Elliott, 337 Burl Bridges Road, Forest City.

Margaret Whisnant
LAWNDALE — Miss Margaret Frances Whisnant, 62, of 211 Bridges St., died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born July 29, 1943, in London, England, she was a daughter of Woodrow Wilson Whisnant and Catherine Crowley Whisnant. She was a certified nurse’s assistant at Cleveland Regional Medical Center for 40 years.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Woodrow “Woody” Whisnant Jr. and wife, Dianne, of Shelby; a sister, Susan Pritchard and husband, Dick, of Waxhaw; three nephews, Kyle Pritchard, Marcus Whisnant and Lukus Whisnant; two nieces, Kathryn Bernaw and husband, Tom, and Sheila Whisnant; and a great-niece, Abigail Whisnant.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Waters officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Rachel High
TOWSON, Md. — Mrs. Rachel Annette Brown High, 81, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005.
A native of Cherryville, she was a daughter of the late Rev. W. T. Brown and Fannie Jane Casey Brown. She was the soul survivor of 11 brothers and sisters. She was married to the late Rev. Samuel A. High, who had worked for the Baptist Convention of Maryland and had served as Pastor of Loch Raven Baptist Church in Baltimore. They also had served together at churches in North Carolina and Texas.
She was an elementary school teacher with Baltimore County Schools and retired in 1989. She wrote curriculum and articles for early education literature. She received a master’s degree in elementary education from Towson State University. She also graduated from Gardner-Webb College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Baltimore. She received great satisfaction from helping others and teaching children. She taught a children’s Sunday school class for 50 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Samala Hocutt and husband, Broadus, of Charlotte and Dr. Mary J. High of Boiling Springs; a son, Samuel A. High Jr. and wife, Sherine, of Forest Hill, Md.; and four grandsons, Heath High and Eric High of Forest Hill and Adam Hocutt and Ray Hocutt of Charlotte. She was very proud that all four grandchildren are in college.
The family would like to thank the staff of Edenwald Retirement Community for their compassion and love. She felt like Edenwald was her home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Valley Baptist Church, 1401 York Road, with the Rev. Jerry Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Saters Baptist Church Cemetery in Lutherville, Md.
