Sheila Willis

CHERRYVILLE — Sheila Ann Willis, 39, of 829 Old Stubbs Road, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, in an auto accident in Columbia, N.C.

She was born in Cleveland County, on Feb. 16, 1966, a daughter of the late Bobby G. Willis and Ruby Cook Willis of Cherryville

She was employed in home construction and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Cherryville.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, David Gene Willis of Cherryville and E-5 Daniel Keith Willis, U.S. Army — Fort Knox, Ky.; two grandsons, David Gene Willis Jr. and Daniel Keith Willis Jr.; sister Rita Faye Lovelace and husband, Larry, of Cherryville; two brothers, Bobby Gene Willis Jr. and wife Donna and Johnny Shane Willis and wife Angela, both of Cherryville.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in Knob Creek Methodist Church Cemetery in Belwood.

The family will receive friends Tuesday an hour before the funeral at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Carpenter’s Funeral Home is serving the family.

Pansy Roberts

CHARLOTTE — Miss Pansy G. Roberts, daughter of the late Joseph U. Roberts Sr. and Mabell McCluney Roberts was born in Cherokee County, S.C., on October 23, 1927.

She departed this earthly life at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sisters, Gladys Teimster, Mary Helen Roberts, Evelyn Roberts and Margaret Misenhaimer; a brother, Joseph U. Roberts (Celestine); nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church West. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Alexander Funeral Home, Charlotte, is serving the family.

Etta Leach

SHELBY —Mrs. Etta Belle Bizzell Leach, 55, of 512 Goldwater Street, left this life peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Ms. Angela Leach.

Etta was born Feb. 11, 1950, the daughter of the late Bryant Ardessie Johnson Bizzell, in Kinston.

She received her education in the Lenoir County public schools. Her family moved to New Jersey in the early 1960s. In 1966, she married Hugh Leach. Into this union, three children were born.

Everyone who knew Etta knew she deeply loved her family, especially her children, and was a great inspiration and support in their lives. In 1974, Etta and Hugh moved with their children to North Carolina in search of a better life. Etta worked at Cone Mills for more than 10 years. For several years, Etta worked beside her daughter with the Cleveland County Business Development Center and D&D Bonding. She volunteered her time assisting students at Shelby Middle School. She enjoyed caring for others in need and decided to go back to school to become a certified nursing assistant. She worked as a CNA, giving heart and soul to her patients at several nursing homes before working at Kindred Nursing Centers and Gaston Residential Services until cancer disabled her in February 2005.

Etta was a member of Suck Creek Baptist Church, where she was an assistant Sunday school teacher with Young Woman’s Sunday School and a member of YWAs, Pastors Aide and the Greeters Club over the years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Adell Bizzell Kelly, two brothers, Bobby Johnson and Johnny Ray Bizzell, and a son, Terry E. Brown.

She leaves to cherish fond memories, her husband, Hugh Leach of the home; one daughter, Angela Leach of Shelby; two sons, Curtis Leach of Shelby, Hugh Anthony Leach (Debra) of Ocala, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Tayae Brown of Rahway, N.J.; six grandchildren, Christopher Leach of Shelby, Keandrea Sada Leach and Sergio Antonio Leach of Lawndale, Sheterra Brown, Ashia Brown and Terrance Brown of Rahway, a sister, Julia Faye Hawkins (Thomas) of Roselle, N.J.; five brothers, Robert Bizzell (Gloria) and Jerome Bizzell (Sussie) of Goldsboro, Chester Bizzell (Mary Alice) and Major Bizzell (Rosa Mae) of Hillside, N.J.; and Emmanuel Bizzell (Edna) of Roselle; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at Genesis Chapel, with Pastor Toney Macomson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.At other times, the family will be at 710 Cherryville Road, Shelby.

Pearl Philbeck

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Pearl L. Philbeck, age 86, of Bostic, died Sunday, September 4, 2005, at Autumn Care Nursing Center in Forest City.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Sandy Level Baptist Church Cemetery.

Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wincie McCraw

MOORESBORO — Wincie Alberta McCraw, 91, of 2624 Wood Road died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.

A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Lucy Jones McCraw. She was a homemaker and a member of Lavonia Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Rush McCraw, Madison McCraw and Solon McCraw, and three sisters, Valiree McCraw, Gahlena McCraw and Marie McCraw.

She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy McCraw and Alpha McCraw, both of Mooresboro; and nieces and nephews, Nancy and Gene Matheney of Shelby, David and Kim Matheney of Mooresboro, Gina Matheney Reeves of Mooresboro, and Christopher Reeves and Tyler Reeves, both of Shelby.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Lavonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Ray Webb and David Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6:30 to 8 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside.

Memorials may be made to the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund, in care of Lavonia Baptist Church, 2841 Camp Creek Church Road, Mooresboro, NC 28114.

Elizabeth Baynard

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Elizabeth Ruth Thomason Baynard, 53, of Rutherfordton, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, in Spartanburg.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Southern Baptist Church in Rutherfordton with the Rev. John Perry officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Crowe’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Margie Davis

LAWNDALE — Mrs. Margie Ethel Brittain Davis, 70, of 452 Vic Randall Road, died Sunday Sept. 4, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover.

She was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Cleveland County. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Brady Harold Davis, and her parents, Marshall Brittain and Annie Mae Willis Brittain.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Patsy Davis of Lawndale, and three grandchildren, April Davis, Brandy Ann Davis and Chad Davis, all of Lawndale.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Welch officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

James Hollifield

SHELBY — Mr. James Hollifield, 72, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Lutz-Austell Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Phoenix Dixon

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Phoenix (Bot) Dixon, 84, of 301 J.C. Dellinger Road, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Hospice of Wendover.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Rudisill Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with burial to follow in Cherryville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Ebony & White’s Funeral Service is serving the family.

Maggie Edwards

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Maggie B. Edwards, 111, of 615 Car Farm Road died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Boger City Rest Home.

Arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

Robert Peterkin

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Robert Lee Peterkin, 82, of 200 Bridges Circle died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover. He was born July 22, 1923, the son of the late John Wesley and Fannie Jane-Easterling Peterkin and a native of Marlboro County, S.C.

He retired from the United States government in 1984 after 34 years of service in which he was employed as a driver for U.S. government personnel and a procurer of government supplies from Fort Dix, N.J. He was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church in New York where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the usher board and on the finance committee. He was also a Prince Hall Mason. After moving back to North Carolina, he joined the Washington Baptist Church of Shelby. He was married to the former Senora Carol Bridges.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Julius, Frank, James and Scipio Peterkin; and four sisters, Emma Pearson, Martha Covington, Fannie Jackson and Mary Pouncy.

Mr. Peterkin is survived by his loving wife, Senora Carol Bridges Peterkin; one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Andrea Grant (Alden) of Charlotte; one sister and her spouse, the Rev. Ella Mae Ivey (Dwellie) of Front Royal, Va.; three very dear and close friends, Mrs. James Ansley of Bronx, N.Y., and William and Mary Bridges of Kings Mountain; and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennoris Byers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and other times at the home.

The family would like to thank all of you at Crawley Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Wendover for your constant care of our husband, father, brother and uncle during his illness.

Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the Peterkin service.

Pinkie Blanton

SHELBY — Mrs. Pinkie Lee Bell Blanton, 86, of 206 Peach St., died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Century Care of Cherryville.

A native of Cleveland County, she retired from Doran Textiles and was formerly employed by Celanese Corp. She was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years.

She was a kind and loving wife, dedicated to her husband and home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Annie Ledford Bell; two sisters, Faye Bell Phillips and Edna Bell Styles; and two brothers, Edmond and Alvin Bell.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter J. Blanton of the home, and her loving extended family, Bill Carswell, his wife, Alison, and their two sons, Will and Ben.

The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jim Brackett and Ron Caulder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Memorials will be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1022 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.
