Catherine Parsons

PLEASANT GARDEN — Catherine Bailey Parsons of Pleasant Gardens and Friends Home West for the first and last time was too tired to continue to embrace life and those she loves. On Aug. 16, 2005, as a warm summer breeze carried the sweet scents of summer flowers she loved, God’s angels carried her to the arms of Jesus.

She was raised in Shelby, where at Shelby High she was an honor student, class officer, member of Beta Club, Glee Club, basketball team, champion debate club, coeditor of the school annual, a marshal and graduated third in a class of 139.

She attended Winthrop College receiving a degree in social work and journalism, History and English at Chapel Hill, and counseling and American Literature at UNC-G. While at Winthrop she was in May Court, glee club, college senate, and marching and concert band. She was coeditor and columnist of the school paper, a member of Nu Phi Mu and National Honor Society for chemistry and social studies and graduated third in a class of 115.

After college she worked a year for South Carolina Department of Welfare and two and a half years for the Shelby Daily Star during World War II as a reporter and feature writer for court, schools, civic clubs and sports events. She performed with a ballroom dance team and while performing in Chapel Hill met a group of students from High Point and decided to move there and teach.

She taught four years at High Point Junior High and met and married Jim Parsons in 1948. She became active in community work, was on the YMCA board of directors, an officer in the Quaker Church, secretary of League of Women Voters, president of High Point Council of Garden Clubs, and organized Hum N Hoe Garden Club, where she served as president, vice president and secretary.

In the early ’50’s she moved to Pleasant Garden, where she taught at Pleasant Garden High for five years. She taught English and History, staged Junior Follies, and sponsored cheerleaders who were the best in the county. Her community activities in Pleasant Garden included program chairman of the PTA, kindergarten board, president of the book club, and charter member and organizer of Community Center and Horse Show. She joined Pleasant Garden Methodist Church, organized the young peoples’ Sunday school class, and was a social worker volunteer for four years for the Pleasant Garden community.

In Greensboro she was counselor and secretary of Piedmont Memorial and Funeral Society on a national level. She was a charter member of Forrest Oaks Country Club, officer in the women’s golf association and organizer of the 9-hole club. She was a member of Greensboro Historical Museum Guild and president for four years, vice president of programs for six years, and gift shop volunteer. She was Charity League secretary for eight years, education chairman for six years, and taught bridge at YWCA, area Country Clubs and homes. She was an officer in the Lecture League of Greensboro and listed in “Personalities of the South” Ref. No. 920, pp. 557 in recognition of outstanding teachers of the south.

She was a strong advocate of education, justice, and civil rights and was interviewed by U.N.C. Television for a documentary about the 1960 Woolworth sit-in and her teaching constitutional equality and active participation in the event.

It was her desire for this information to be printed that everyone may know the potential of all human life. She was 5’2” and 110 pounds wringing wet but she made a difference in a lot of lives because she could and she loved people. Know that no matter who you are, with God and determination you all may realize your dreams.

She is survived by her sons, “Jay” James S. Parson Jr. of Winston-Salem and Hoyt Bailey Parsons of Thomasville; a brother, Hoyt Q. Bailey of Shelby; sisters, Jorja DeForge of Nashville, Tenn., Ruby Price of Fresno, Calif., and Mildred DePugh of Laurinburg; a nephew, David Parsons and wife, Bonnie, of Guilford College; a niece, Penny Parsons of Raleigh and deeply loved nieces and nephews from her brother and sisters.

The service will be Sunday, Aug. 28. at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church, 4834 Pleasant Garden Road. Flowers may be sent to Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, 5926 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410 and cards to Bailey Parsons, 139 Pine Valley Road, Thomasville, NC 27360, (336) 476-5338.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Garden UMC, P. O. Box 188, Pleasant Garden, NC 27313.
