Eva Lail
SHELBY — Mrs. Eva Ledford Lail, 94, of 1153 Mitchell St., died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at home.
Born Aug. 23, 1910, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late E. N. Ledford and Cora Weaver Ledford. She was retired from the Lily Mill and was a member of the Lily Mill Old Timer’s Club. She was a charter member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin “Bud” Lail; a daughter, Marilyn Pitchford; a son, Lloyd Lee Lail; a brother, Pinkney Ledford; and a sister, Ethel Fisher.
She is survived by four sons, Ralph Lail and wife, Diane, Howard Lail and wife, Pat, Virgil Lail and wife, Helen, and Roy Lail, all of Shelby; a daughter, Susie Bowling and husband, Tommy, of Shelby; a brother, Leroy Ledford of Cherryville; three sisters, Minnie Bridges of Lawndale and Heddie Faulkner and Mary Margaret Saine and husband, Blaine, all of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Bobby Elmore Jr. and Mike Chambers officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends today at the funeral home one and one half-hours before the service and at other times at the home.

HENRIETTA — Mr. Larry Thomas Johnson, 56, of 244 S. Pearidge Road, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in Rutherfordton.
A memorial service will be tonight at his home from 5 to 7, with the Rev. Jerry Marshal officiating.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Robert Alan “Sweet Old Bob” Barwell, 50, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at home.
The funeral will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel, with Chaplain Charles Simmons officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home from 5 to 7.

CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sellers Martin, 64, of 204 Kenwood Road, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Hughes and Pastor Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.
The body will be taken to the home, 204 Kenwood Road, and the family will receive friends anytime today.

SHELBY — Mrs. Julia Mae Brooks Williams, 61, of 1501 Eaves Road, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at home.

POLKVILLE — Mr. Bobby B. Ray, 72, of 3401 W. Stagecoach Trail, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Richardson officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home immediately following the service.

SHELBY — Mrs. Bertha Lee Shytle Hamrick, 79, of 110 Philbeck St., died Wednesday, April 6, 2005.

Margaret Gaddis
BELMONT — Mrs. Margaret Garrison Gaddis, 81, of Acme Road, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Eller Mae Reep Garrison. She was retired from Acme Spinning after 42 years of service. She was a longtime member of Centerview Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where she served as a children’s Sunday school teacher, a member of the WMU and served as a nursery worker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Brandon, Bert Bridges and Bobbie Greene.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Miles M. Gaddis; two daughters, Linda Summey and husband, Amos, of Shelby and Pat Keistler and husband, Reggie, of Charlotte; a brother, Paul Garrison of Gastonia; two sisters, Helen Dellinger and husband, Wilbur, of Belmont and Mary Young and husband, Roy, of Cramerton; a brother-in-law, Charles Brandon of Asheboro; three grandsons, Reggie Keistler Jr. and wife, Sue Ann, of Charlotte, Gregg Keistler and wife, Laura, of Clover, S.C. and Brian Summey and wife, Kim, of Shelby; five great-grandchildren, Colby and Allie Keistler of Charlotte, Sarah and Anna Keistler of Clover, and Myles Summey of Shelby; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral is tonight at 6 at Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly, with the Rev. Robbie Moore officiating. A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home immediately following the service.

Doris Montgomery
SHELBY — Ms. Doris Lavon “Sister” Montgomery, 64, of 206 Palmer St., died Monday, April 4, 2005, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Alexander Eaves and Jessie Griffin Eaves. She was employed at Gardner Webb College and was a member of Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, cooking and taking care of her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Warren Montgomery Jr.; a daughter, Wanda Montgomery; and two brothers, John Dawson Jr. and Jimmy Eaves.
She is survived by three sons, Wayne Montgomery (Margaret) of Clarksville, Tenn., and Darryl Montgomery (Shirley) and Gerald Montgomery, both of Shelby; two daughters, Cheryl Montgomery and Adrian Montgomery, both of Shelby; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six sisters, Martha Hamrick, Deborah White (Kim) and Sheila McDowell, all of Charlotte, Jeanette Banner (Robert) and Linda Eaves, both of Shelby and Marie Gardner of Washington, D.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert E. Coleman officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Friday at the church 30 minutes before the service.

UNION MILLS — Mr. William Robert Morris, 72, of U.S. Hwy. 64, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at home.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church.

Charles Smith
SHELBY — Mr. Charles Odus “O.C.” Smith, 82, of 1027 New House Road, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover, after a long illness.
Born Dec. 27, 1922, in Marion, he was a son of the late Mitchell and Vernie Smith. He was a veteran of World War II, a former employee of Shelby Mill and was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation. He also farmed and enjoyed working in the yard, feeding the birds and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Ruth (Ann) Hawkins Smith of the home; two brothers, John M. Smith of Ruth and Bobby Smith and wife, Joyce, of Shelby; two sisters, Phyllis Poole and husband, Walter, of Shelby and Jackie Wynn of Florida; a sister-in-law, Selma Hawkins Bridges and husband, Otha, of Shelby; a niece, Edith Ann Deaton and husband, Robert, of Shelby; a nephew, Wayne Bridges and wife, Debbie of Shelby; great nieces and nephews, Anna Deaton Hamrick and husband, Bly, of Boiling Springs, Ashley and Matthew Deaton of Shelby, and Jeremy Bridges and wife, Laura, and son, Jake, of Shelby; and a number of other nieces and nephews and their families.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, with the Revs. Brent Hilliard, Joel Dale and Glenn Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

Lena Staton
HENDERSONVILLE — Following a long battle with cancer, Mrs. Lena B. Staton, 89, went to be with her Lord on April 1, 2005, at Elizabeth House.
Born in the Bob’s Creek community in 1915, she was a lifelong resident of Henderson County, the seventh child of the late David Levi Beddingfield Jr. and Juletta “Julia” Jones Beddingfield. For the past seven years, she made her home with her daughter at 419 Crest Road in East Flat Rock.
She was a charter member of Maranatha Baptist Church, East Flat Rock. She was a loving Christian lady and mother. She loved cooking and needlepoint, even after she lost her right eye to cancer in 1965. She attended the old Flat Rock High School and was employed for many years at the former Green River Mills in Tuxedo.
She is survived by her daughter, Daphne S. Hedden, of East Flat Rock; two sons, Steve Staton and wife, Donna, of Pinellas Park, Fla., and the Rev. David Lewis Staton and wife, Sibyl, of Hendersonville; three sisters, Thelma Summey and husband, Joe, of Horse Shoe, Lucille Worley and husband, Steve, of Hendersonville and Agnes Lively of Zirconia; one brother, Paul Beddingfield of Pisgah Forest; three granddaughters, Kathy King, Kimberly Truelove and husband, Bobby, and Victoria McCabe; five grandsons, Haskell Staton and wife, Alisshia, Hannon Staton, Rex Staton, Stanwood Dawson and Duane Dawson; four great-granddaughters, Cheryl Greene, Kerrie Staton, Kimberly Staton and Ashley McCabe; six great-grandsons, Matthew King, Tyler Staton, Steven Staton, Matthew McCabe and Cpl. Chris Greene, stationed in Iraq; two great-great-granddaughters, Chloe Phillips and Lexie Greene; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents, two sisters, Louise Levi and Nora Levi, and three brothers, Oscar Beddingfield, Henry Beddingfield and Fred Beddingfield, preceded her in death. She married J. Paul Staton in February 1935. He died in 1992.
The funeral, conducted by the Revs. D. Lewis Staton and Mike Jackson and Dr. Carl Mintz, will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church, East Flat Rock.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.
Burial will be in the Beddingfield Family Cemetery in the Bob’s Creek community.
The family appreciates the loving care at Elizabeth House during her stay there.
