Loyd Martin

CASAR — Mr. Loyd Christy Martin, 77, of 5522 Casar Road, went to be with the Lord and join his wife on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005.

A native of Cleveland County, he was born April 7, 1927, and retired from Drexel Plants 3 and 5, with 47 years of service. After retirement, Mr. Martin enjoyed restoring antiques for people in his community.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruby Leona Jones Martin; parents, Julius Edgar Martin and Biddie Octavia Hastings Martin; son, Loyd Franklin Martin; six brothers, Frank, Lawrence, Ray, Hugh Lee, Grady and Reuben Martin; and two sisters, Lillian Smith and Mary Hoyle.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Reva Martin of Morganton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bill Evans of Morganton; a sister, Emma Randall of Morganton; five grandchildren, Gregory Gechter, Chelle-Marie Stover, Shevela Parris, Andy Gechter and Shawn Martin; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Leo Hector

LAWNDALE — Mr. Leo Hector, 83, of 112 Pony Barn Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Openview Retirement Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Arnetta M. Williams, at 608 Leander St. in Shelby.

Dockery’s Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Floy Hoag

LAWNDALE — Ms. Floy Louise Hoag, 58, of 103-1 Maple Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carrell Pruette officiating.

Stamey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Cloninger

YORK, S.C. — Mrs. Dorothy Queen Cloninger, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at home.

A memorial service was held Friday at 11 a.m. at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sam McGregor officiating.

A private burial was held.

The family received friends following the service.

Greene Funeral Home in Rock Hill, S.C., handled arrangements.

George Matheny

ANDERSON, S.C. — Mr. George Willie Matheny, 99, formerly of Spindale, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005.

The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Spencer Baptist Church, with the Revs. Billy Vaughn, Bruce Caldwell and Malone Thomason officiating.

Burial will follow Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home.

Robert Putnam

SHELBY — Mr. Robert Lee Putnam, 61, of 139 Spurling Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2005, at home.

A native of Cleveland County, he was an instructor in the electrical department at Cleveland Community College. He was a member of Waco Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ola Hamrick Putnam; and a daughter, Kay Stamey

He is survived by his father, Marion A. Putnam; wife, Deloris Austin Putnam; a son, Bobby Putnam of Shelby; stepsons, Tommy Burnett and Bobby Burnett, both of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Wendy Lowery and her husband, Arthur, of Shelby; a sister, Grace Brackett and her husband, Dale, of Shelby; a grandson, Matthew Stamey; stepgrandchildren, Brent Lowery, Jason Lowery, Tommy Lee Sears and Clay Champion.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Tapp officiating. Burial will follow in Capernium Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 to 9 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Aariyonne Brands

Mount Holly — Aariyonne Denae Brands, infant daughter of Patrice Lajune Peeler and Aaron Brands of 801 S. Main St., Apt. 101, died Friday Feb. 4, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Zeno Toney

ELLENBORO — Mr. Zeno Toney, 89, of 921 New House Road died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Rutherford Hospital.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Williams and Dr. Wayne Blackwood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive visitiors this evening from 6 until 8 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Clayton Cantrell

MOORESBORO — Mr. Clayton Centrell, 70, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Autumn Care of Forest City.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gateway Tabernacle with the Revs. Fay Walker and Carlton Hames officiating.

Burial will follow at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times at the home of a son, Terry Cantrell, 2178 Big Island Road, Rutherfordton.

Jerry E. Evans

GROVER — Mr. Jerry E Evans, 64, of 3105 Blacksburg Highway, Grover, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at home.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Noble O. and Dorcus Leigh Evans. He worked with his son at Evans Garage in Earl. He attended Love Valley Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons, John E. Evans, of Memphis, Tenn and Randy H. Evans of Earl; a daughter, Teresa M. Evans of Blacksburg, S.C.; two brothers, Jack Evans of Blacksburg and George Evans of Grover; and two grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Christina Evans and one sister, Marie Galloway.

A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Evans Family Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Boone officiating.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at White Columns of Blacksburg and at other times at their respective homes.

Gloria Anthony

CHARLOTTE — Ms. Gloria Anthony, 62, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Beverly Health Care in Charlotte.

She was born on July 27, 1942, in Prince William County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late James Harlem Anthony and the Late Agnis Wilson Anthony.

She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Philip Lamar and Sharon Blanton of Grover, Thomas Wayne Blanton of Grover and Christopher Corder of Kings Mountain.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery in Shelby with services performed under the direction of Greene Funeral Service – South Chapel.

‘Gene’ Tignor

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Thurman Eugene “Gene” Tignor, 81, a resident of 413 Scotland Drive, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at the home of his son in Kings Mountain.

He was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Hancock County, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Eliza Cody Tignor, his wife Dorothy “Dot” Cobb Tignor, whom he married before going off to war, and a son, Michael Reid Tignor.

Gene was one of seven boys and a girl born in East Tennessee. His father died of Brights disease when Gene was 4-years-old. His mother worked in local cotton mills, raising her children alone.

He served in the European Theatre during World War II with the 158th Engineers Division and received a Five Star Battle Medal. Mr. Tignor was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain where he served as Scout Master of Troop No. 294 from 1962-1974. In the early ’70s he took a group of Scouts to the Philomont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He worked with League Baseball and helped start Little League Baseball in Kings Mountain and also played and coached softball teams in Kings Mountain.

He retired from the Kings Mountain Fire Department, where he served as chief from 1973 until April 1989. He was the first paid fire chief for Kings Mountain Fire Department. Before his tenure as chief, he served as assistant chief under Floyd Thornburg. He started programs while working with the fire department to help children, one of which was restoring bicycles for children. Mr. Tignor’s brother, Pat Tignor also served as chief. He was with the Kings Mountain Fire Department for 40 years. Mr. Tignor also owned a garage in Kings Mountain for 30 years and had a small cattle farm, running 30 to 40 head. He continued to help on church committees and other activities until his death.

Mr. Tignor is survived by a son, Ronnie Tignor and wife Shirley of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren, Larry and David Deal, Susan Allison, Lisa Whitaker, Sarah Tignor Edmonson and Jason Tignor; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Church with the Rev. Ken Gillikin officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain.

The family will receive visitors tonight from 6:30 to 8:20 at Harris Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, 2132 Brookforest Drive, Kings Mountain.

Memorials may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 600 Crescent Circle, Kings Mountain 28086 and Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Mary Godley

SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Belk Godley, 87, of 1613 E. Marion St., died Friday, March 4, 2005, at home.

Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Young Belk and Mamie Hardin Belk. She was a homemaker and had been self employed at Godley Clothing Shop. She attended Elizabeth Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe D. Godley; and a granddaughter.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry Lingerfelt and wife, Kay, of Shelby and Robert Lingerfelt of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Betty Kendrick and husband, Lowery, of Shelby and Susie Woods of the home; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday at Cleveland Funeral Services from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
