Kate Strickland
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Kate Molee Mullinax Strickland, 100, of 154 A Oakcreek Circle, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
Born in Lavonia, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Luther and Sarah Mullinax. She was a homemaker and a member of Hoyle Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, nine brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Elva S. Jennings of Gaffney; a brother, James Marvin Strickland of Baltimore; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby.
Pallbearers are Matthew Greene, Todd Blackburn, Jason Butler, Bryan Butler, Danny Blackburn and Edgar Blackburn.
The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home an hour before the service and at other times at the home.

John Dayberry
SHELBY — Mr. John Junior Dayberry, 84, formerly of 800 Kirby St., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late John A. and Iona Brackett Dayberry. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps and the Navy. He participated in the European Theater and was held captive in the famous Stalag 17 POW Camp. He received the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldier’s Medal and Prisoner of War Medal. He retired from the post office and was a member of American Legion Post No. 82.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, “Jap,” Clete and Sam Dayberry; and seven sisters, Effie Lazenby, Dessie Runyans, Mattie Cook, Lounette Carpenter, Stella Rollins, Annie Lowery and Eva Weaver.
He is survived by a brother, Wilbur Dayberry and wife, Ruth, of Cherryville; a sister-in-law, Lucille Dayberry of Kings Mountain; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be Friday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Rebecca Ann Ruff Surratt, 86, of 421 Piedmont Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Lee Etta Edwards
ASHEVILLE — Mrs. Lee Etta Todd Edwards, 88, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Asheville Healthcare Center. A massive stroke in September began the gradual ebbing away of her life.
Born Aug. 10, 1916, in Daisy, S.C., she was a daughter of the late William Raleigh Todd and Naomi Carter Todd. She was employed at Spofford Mills. For most of her adult years, she and her family were active members of Gibson Avenue Baptist Church in Wilmington. Inspired by her faith and love of family, she and her husband, Walton, practiced and taught to their children the core values of education, generosity and service.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Walton Macy Edwards; two brothers, Theodore and “W.R.” Todd; and two sisters, Letha Clemmons and Marie Clemmons.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice Edwards Siler and husband, the Rev. Mahan Siler, of Asheville; a son, Walton Dale Edwards and wife, Joan, of Blowing Rock; a sister, Marguerite Todd Jewell Fornes of Hampstead; two sisters-in-law, Louise Todd and Gwen Todd of Wilmington; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of Gibson Avenue Baptist Church in Wilmington, with the Rev. Mahan Siler officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday at the church an hour before the service. The family invites friends to join them in giving thanks to God for this life well lived among us.

Groff Yeck
LAWNDALE — Mr. Groff Clinton Yeck passed away peacefully in American Fork, Utah, Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005.
Born Aug. 29, 1926, in Peoria, Ill., he moved with his family to Salt Lake City at the age of 14. At the age of 17, he entered the Armed services and retired after 32 years in the Marine Corps Reserve. Friends remember him as “Sarge.”
While in the service, he met and married Mildred Eaker of Lawndale. They raised their family in Northern Virginia before retiring to North Carolina in 1988. He served as Bishop of the Shelby Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together they served as Temple Missionaries in the Orlando Florida Temple.
Surviving is his wife; children, Priscilla Yeck-Nygaard, William Yeck and Carl Yeck; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 307 Country Club Road, Shelby, with Bishop Will Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday at the church from 10 to 10:40 a.m.
Private family visitation will follow from 10:40 to 11 a.m.

Richard Lachmund
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Richard Hunter Lachmund, 79, of 211 S. Shelby St., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby.
Born in Atlanta, he was a son of the late Bruno Lachmund and Elizabeth Sandifer Hunter Lachmund. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, a former Rotarian and a retired industrial minerals processor.
He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Lachmund of the home.
A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, with the Rev. Anne Parrott officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at St. John’s United Methodist Church fellowship building, 105 S. Rutherford St., Blacksburg and at other times at the home.

BOSTIC — Mr. David Scott Mode, 42, of 319 Puzzle Creek Road, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at home.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of Steve and Margaret Patterson Mode of Forest City. He was a pipeline construction employee.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Steven Thomas Mode of Forest City; a sister, Sonja Link of Greenville; his grandmother, Fannie Mode of Rutherfordton; and his grandfather, Hugh Patterson of Spindale.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, with the Rev. Owen Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Harrelson Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9.
Benjie Lee Crump
CAROLEEN — Mr. Benjie Lee Crump, 37, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church, with the Revs. Leroy Bridges and Kevin Towery officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Hazel “Pat” Baynard Francis, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Fair Haven Home.
The funeral will be private. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Woodrow Wilson Price, 86, of 398 Park Gate Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Todd Gothard and Michael Snelgrove officiating. Burial will follow in Cliffside Cemetery.

LAKE LURE — Mrs. Margaret Mary Devereaux Michelon, 87, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, and Delray Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at home.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fairfield Mountains Chapel, with the Rev. Everette Chapman officiating.

BOSTIC — Mr. Robert Gettys Hollifield, age 82, of Bostic, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Henderson Care Center in Forest City.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour before the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will follow the service at Sunshine UMC Cemetery.
