Dorothy Strickland
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Dorothy Lois Melton Strickland, 79, of 1355 Old Highway 74, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Rutherford Hospital. A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late William Lee and Lora Florence Cochran Melton. She was the bookkeeper for Strickland Grading and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Calvin Strickland. She is survived by four sons, Larry Strickland of Rutherfordton, Bill Strickland, Doug Strickland and Mile Strickland, all of Ellenboro; one daughter, Linda Philbeck of Ellenboro; one brother, Bill Cochran of Forest City; nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Corinth Baptist Church with the Revs. David Jendrey and Ad Hopper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home this evening from 7 to 9.
Tina Summey
SHELBY — Albertine “Tina” Lefler Summey, 83, slipped away surrounded by her family and friends Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born April 12, 1921, she was the daughter of Daniel and Lena Lefler of Norwood. She was a graduate of the University of Greensboro with a degree in music. She taught at Wake Forest University. An accomplished and gifted musician, she directed choirs and was an organist for several churches with her predeceased husband of 55 years, Rev. Charlie B. “Chilie” Summey. Tina served as choir director and organist at churches in Lynchburg, Va., Knightdale, N.C., First Baptist, Fort Myers, Fla., and First Baptist in Gastonia. She was also musically associated with the Handbell Choir of Aldersgate Methodist in Shelby and other churches in Belmont and Charlotte. A talented piano teacher in Shelby after the retirement of her husband, she touched the lives of many students of all ages.
Tina was a wonderful mother to her only daughter, Dana Summey Hoyle and Dana’s lifelong sweetheart, Russell Hayes; and loving grandmother to Ashley, Travis and Brittany Hoyle.
She was predeceased by her sister, Joyce Lefler Reid of Norwood. She is also survived by her nephew, Jack and Maxine Reid of Norwood, Wayne and Margaret Howard of Fernadina Beach, Fla., Ron and Kim Sullivan of Anaheim, Calif., and all their loving families.
Special thanks to everyone at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center for their sincere and compassionate care in making her last year a happy one. Tina was known there for her smile and sincerest gratitude to all.
Visitation will be 12 to 12:45 Wednesday before the 1 p.m. funeral service in the Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia, followed by the reuniting of Tina with her beloved husband Chilie at Gaston Memorial Park. Doris Pruitt
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Doris Loretta Ware Pruitt, 55, of 147 Phifer Circle, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at home.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late W. A. Ware and Margaret Huss Ware Johnson. She was formerly employed by the Cleveland County Department of Social Services.
She was a member of Marion Women of the Moose Lodge.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Carl E. Pruitt of the home; a son, Bradley Wayne Pruitt of the home; a daughter, Deena Michelle Pruitt of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Janice W. Morton and husband, Danny, of Shelby and Cindy W. Carver and husband, Blair, of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren, Jeremy Pruitt, Nicholas Thomas, Brittany Proctor and Christopher Griggs; two stepbrothers; four stepsisters; and a faithful canine companion and friend, “Rusty” Pruitt.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. and at other times at the home.

FALLSTON — Mr. Sterling Maurice Pryor, 39, of 3755 Sugar Hill Road, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Willie Mae Wray
SHELBY — Ms. Willie Mae Wray, 84, of White Oak Manor, departed this life Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Hospice at Wendover.
The family will meet at the home of her brother, Lloyd Wray, 1881 S. Lafayette St., Shelby.

Colleen Ledford
BOSTIC — Mrs. Colleen Newton Ledford, 75, of 415 Eastview Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Fair Haven Nursing Center.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, with the Revs. George Whitmire and Frank Hoyle officiating. Burial will follow at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service.
Max Hampton
FOREST CITY — Mr. Max Edward Hampton, 59, of 746 Washington St., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Webb First Baptist Church in Ellenboro, with the Rev. Michael Moore officiating. The body will be placed in the church an hour before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

John Davis
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. John Burgess Davis, 40, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Pittsburg University Medical Center.
A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Rutherfordton Presbyterian, with Dr. Don Scofield officiating. Burial will follow in Green River Baptist Church Cemetery in Polk County.
The family will receive friends Friday at the church immediately following the service.

Sterling Pryor
LAWNDALE – Mr. Sterling Maurice Pryor, 39, of 3755 Sugar Hill Road, died Monday, January 17, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Helen Woods and Larry Lee Pryor.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Plains View Batptist Church with the Rev. William Ewing officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church Friday. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the services.
‘Red’ Bowers
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Earl “Red” Bowers, 87, died Monday, Jan. 2005, at Hospice House of Forest City.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Southern Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Perry officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight at Crowe’s Mortuary from 6:30 to 8.
James Young
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Master Sergeant James C. “Sarge” Young died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Henry Young of Grover; a son, Jonathan Young and wife, Elaine, of Shelby; a daughter, Sandra Young of Grover; two brothers, King Edward of Cleveland, Ohio and David Davis of Sandusky, Ohio; four sisters, Minister Doris Kendell of Greensboro, Eloise Smith and Mary Logan, both of Lorraine, Ohio and Lanell Campbell of Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Webb-Settles Funeral Home Chapel in Greenville. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs.
Manley Starnes
SHELBY — Mr. Manley Odell Starnes, 80, formerly of 1104 Wilmouth St., died Thursday, December 30, 2004.
Born April 2, 1924, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Broadus Starnes and Sula Pearson Starnes. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He refinished boats at Short’s Boat and Motor and had a carpentry shop in Shelby. Later he worked for and retired from Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Carpenter Starnes; and a sister, Sara Starnes Cabaniss Grigg.
He is survived by two sons, David Starnes and wife, Sherry, of Boiling Springs and Mark Starnes of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two daughters, Sarah Starnes Harris and husband, William, of Apex, and Susan Starnes Whitmire and husband, Jaye, of Conover; a brother-in-law, Arthur Grigg of Shelby; two grandsons, Jason Starnes and Paul Baron; and a granddaughter, Susanna Starnes.
The funeral was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Reed Jones officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
‘Joe’ Eason
STATESVILLE — Mr. Joseph “Joe” Richard Eason Sr., 67, of 1825 Ora Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at home.
Born Oct. 18, 1937, in Fulton County, Ga., he was the son of the late Lillie Mae Farmer. He was a retired truck driver for Carolina Freight and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of South River Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Davis Eason.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; one daughter, Susan E. White and husband, Michael, of Shelby; two sons, Joseph R. Eason Jr. and wife, Kelli, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Phillip Eason and wife, Marsha, of Cherryville; one step-daughter, Tracey Gibson and husband, Creighton, of Statesville; one godchild, Mike Mulligan; one sister, Diane Kirkley of Conyers, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at South River Baptist Church, with the Revs. Hampton Drum and Keith Love officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Cherryville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Lail officiating, with full military rites.
The family will receive friends at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home tonight from 6 to 8 and at other times at the home. Also, the family will receive friends following the graveside service at the home of Phillip and Marsha Eason, 111 Gold St., Cherryville.

CLOVER, S.C. — Mrs. Elizabeth M. Forney, 91, of 285 Valley View Drive, formerly of Asheville, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Avante Nursing Home of Charlotte.

Sterling Pryor
LAWNDALE — Mr. Sterling Maurice Pryor, 39, of 3755 Sugar Hill Road, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Helen Woods and Larry Lee Pryor. He was employed as a machinist at Keystone Powdered Metal Co. in Cherryville and was a member of Plainview Baptist Church. He helped to organize a prayer group in both his workplace and church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Teddrick Pryor; an uncle, Bobby G. Pryor; maternal grandparents; and his father-in-law, Archie Costner.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Judy Costner Pryor; one son, Nakota Daniel Pryor of Lawndale; one daughter, Kirsten Rashay Pryor of Lawndale; his paternal grandparents, who raised him, Sadie Surratt Pryor and Ralph Lee Pryor of Shelby; two brothers, Tim Hoyle and Reddrick “Monty” Pryor, both of Shelby; two sisters, Helena Hunt (Yates) of Shelby and Wanda Gale Ross of Leesville, La.; his stepmother, Sadie Jackson Pryor of Shelby; a special aunt, Sandra Woods of Charlotte; his mother-in-law, Ruth Costner; a brother-in-law, Andrew Costner (Vicki); a sister-in-law, Jane Sarinana (Teodora); a close friend, Bill Allen of Cherryville; and a host of other aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
