Mrs. Elaine Cranford Friedman

Mrs. Elaine Cranford Friedman died Monday, September 29, 2003 at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM, Thursday, October 2, 2003 in the Chapel of Christ United Methodist Church, where she had been a member for more than 50 years. The Reverends Jan Brittain and John Bletsch will officiate. Entombment will follow at the Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Elaine was born October 8, 1924 in Winston-Salem to the late Hubert and Margaret L. Cranford and moved to Greensboro in 1943 with her family. She worked for several years with Burlington Industries in the accounting department and with several certified public accountants. Elaine enjoyed bowling and traveling with her husband as well as volunteering at Wesley Long Hospital. She was a very kind and generous person who always wanted to do for others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Albert P. Friedman in 1995 and her son, James E. Cook, Jr. in 2000.

She is survived by brothers George and wife Estelle, Len and wife Frankie, and William, all of Greensboro; Hugh of Charlotte; and Eugene of Huntersville; sisters, Nancy C. Purcell of Greensboro and Christine Huffman and husband Frank of Greenville, South Carolina. Also surviving are step-daughter Sandra Grady and husband Jeff of Grasonville, Maryland and step-son Maurice Friedman and wife Gilda of Greensboro.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 410 N. Holden Road, Greensboro, NC, 27410.

The family will greet friends at various times at the residence of her brother, George Cranford, at 1307 Clover Lane, Greensboro.

Dr. William Albert Leonard, Jr.

Dr. William Albert Leonard, Jr., 83, of 012 Cleburne St. died Wednesday October 1, 2003 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, October 3, 2003 in St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens.

William Albert Leonard, JR. was born on March 13, 1920 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late William Albert and Mary Etta Lannon Leonard. He graduated from Brown University and Tufts Medical School. Dr. Leonard practiced Internal Medicine in Greensboro for many years retiring in 1978. He initiated the first 24 hour emergency room service at Moses Cone Hospital and was a former board member of the Evergreens Nursing Home. Dr. Leonard had a keen interest in the Civil War and Genealogy and was a voracious reader. Following his retirement he and his wife traveled and enjoyed the mountains.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ann Rhoads Leonard of the home; children, Susan Lowe, Carole Vaughan and her husband Gil, Michael Louis Leonard and his wife, Amy, Christopher David Leonard and his wife, Donna, Robert Lawrence Leonard and his wife, Cynthia all of Greensboro, William Albert Leonard, III and his wife, Susan of Banner Elk, Barbara Braswell and her husband, Stanley of Marion, Daniel Scott Leonard and his wife, Rebecca of Roanoke, Virginia, and Thomas Jeffrey Leonard and his wife, Karen of Raleigh; grandchildren Thomas, Christopher, and Bradley Lowe, William IV, Carrie, Matthew, and Christopher Leonard, Jennifer Vaughan, Leah and Brandon Braswell, Travis, Jonathan, Alexander Leonard, Jack, James, and Michael Leonard, Kristen, Mollie, and Austin Leonard, Brian, Nicholas and Zachary Leonard; Scott and Allison Leonard; one great-grandson Griffin Lowe.

The family will receive friends from 2 – 3 PM on Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic School, 2200 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27408.

Mr. Johnny Louis Brown, Jr.

Mr. Johnny Louis Brown, Jr., 57, died Thursday, October 2, 2003 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.m. Sunday, October 5, 2003 at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, N. Elm Street Chapel with Rev. Ray Whittington officiating.

Mr. Brown was born on September 25, 1946 in Guilford County and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

Survivors include his father, J.L. Brown, Sr. of Greensboro; his mother, Alice Ellis Jones of Greensboro; three children, David Brown of Gibsonville, Denise Edwards of Brown Summit and Michael Brown of Asheboro; six brothers, Roger Brown of Greensboro, Paul Brown of Greensboro, Jerry Brown of Charlotte, Jimmy Brown of Texarkana, Ark., Tony Brown of Charlotte and Robert Brown of Charlotte; two sisters, Cynthia Krawiec of Charlotte and Catherine Walker of Greensboro; three grandchildren, David Brown, Jr., Jessica Brown and Matthew Edwards.

The family will receive friends from 7-9:00 P.M. Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, N. Elm Street and other times at the home of David Brown, 3332 Huffine Mill Road, Gibsonville.

Mr. Fred Leon Wyrick

Mr. Fred Leon Wyrick, 90, of 4401 Hines Chapel Rd., died Friday, October 3, 2003 at Wesley Long Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 P.M. Sunday, October 5, 2003 at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, N. Elm Street Chapel with Rev. Milton Wilder officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Mr. Wyrick was born on January 1, 1913 in Guilford County a son of the late Luther Elvin and Corrina Wright Wyrick. A U. S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he retired from Motor Bearing Company.

Survivors include a sister, Etta Reid Wyrick woods of McLeansville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Elvin Wyrick and Ralph Eugene Wyrick and a sister, Hattie Viola Wyrick Greeson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 P.M. Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, N. Elm Street and other times at the home of his sister, 4403 Hines Chapel Road.

Mrs. Rachel Joyce Duggins

Mrs. Rachel Joyce Duggins of Mayodan died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Mayodan Moravian Church. Interment will following in the church graveyard.

The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 PM Monday, October 6, 2003 at her residence.

Mr. John Calhoun Sinkhorn

Mr. John C. "Jack" Sinkhorn, 71, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 13, 2003 at Saint Martha’s Roman Catholic Parish Community in Akron, Ohio. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Parish Center.

Mr. Sinkhorn was born on April 4, 1932 in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Warren K. and Helen Calhoun Sinkhorn and moved to Greensboro in 1999 from Akron. He was a retired self employed home remodeler and a member of St. Pius Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Carpenters Union of Ohio. Jack spent many years as a Boy Scout leader at St. Martha’s Parish and as a basketball and baseball coach for the Catholic Youth Organization. He never met a stranger and had a great love for the outdoors.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen Sturm of Greensboro; a brother, Warren Sinkhorn of Arizona; two sisters, Doris Fox of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and Sally Mima of Akron, Ohio and one grandson, Joshua Sturm of Greensboro.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at both the Hospice Unit of Moses Cone Hospital and Hospice and Palliative Care at Greensboro.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jack’s honor to either Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC, 27405 or to the N.C. Boxer Rescue, P.O. Box 2343, Jamestown, NC, 27282.

Mrs. Gertrude Vivian Young Simons

Mrs. Gertrude Young Simons, 99, of Jamestown, died Friday, October 10, 2003 at Wesley Long Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, October 13, at Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel.

Mrs. Simons was born August 30, 1904 in Ontario, Canada and was a retired teacher from the Vermont and Massachusetts school systems. She was the oldest member of Soapstone United Methodist Church in Raleigh and enjoyed painting beautiful art with oils and pastels.

Preceding her in death was her husband Charles H. Simons.

Two sons, Curtis Y. Simons, of Youngstown, OH, and David G. Simons, and his wife, Evelyn, of Jamestown; sister, Jean Reed, of Medway, MA; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren all survive her.

The family will receive friends following the service on Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Jean Closs Trout

Jean Closs Trout, age 71, died on October 11, 2003 at Moses Cone Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel.

Jean was born on July 15, 1932, in Wymore Nebraska and moved to Greensboro in 1968. She retired from BB&T where she worked for over fifteen years. Mrs. Trout was an avid gardener, and loved meeting with her friends for bible study or playing bridge. Above all, Jean was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Goins of Greensboro, and son George L. Trout and his wife Lisa of Carthage NC. She is also survived by three brothers Morris Closs of Boulder CO, William Closs of Wymore NE, and Roger Closs of Tucson AZ, and four grandchildren Courtney Goins, Jeanne Goins, Mary Trout, and Maggie Trout.

Memorials may be sent to Jefferson Gardens Beautification Committee at 5308 Thorncliff Dr. Greensboro NC 27410 c/o Joe Quinn.

Mr. Richard Allen Johnson

Mr. Richard Allen Johnson, 76, of 1807 Downing St., died Saturday October 11, 2003 at his residence.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 4:00PM at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the Memorial Service at the church.

Richard joined the US Navy during World War II. His expertise in Morse Code earned him the privilege to be a part of Admiral Byrd’s Expedition to the South Pole during "Operation High jump" in 1947.

He was a radio and television sportscaster in Wisconsin for 25 years, accompanying the "Glory Years" Green Bay Packers and Coach Vince Lombardi to the first two Super Bowls.

He also traveled with the Marquette University basketball team as it was brought to national prominence by one of the most colorful men he had ever known, Mr. Al McGuire. He authored and published two books of poetry, "Life’s Winding Way" and "Faith, Hope & Reality". He spent the last seventeen years touring the country with art exhibitions selling his work.

He is survived by his wife and best friend for 55 years Lois of the home; five children, Vicky and Phil Gray and their children Geoffrey, Matthew, and Whitney; Fred Johnson; Lisa and Kelly Parker; Stacy and Tim Healy and their children Colin, Casey, and Max; Amy and Ahmed Yamani; one brother Robert Johnson and his son Tim; In-Laws, Yvonne and Jay Bolda, Steve and Jodi, Connie and Jerry, Laura and Gary, Marlene Barkley, Peter and Mary, Nick and Katie, John and Michelle, Karen and Swede Olson, Rick and Maureen, Kathy and Steve, Rob and Laura, 11 grand-nieces and 9 grand-nephews.

He leaves this world for his Heavenly Home to join his father Albin, beloved aunts Esther and Ruth Johnson, his revered parents-in-law Fred and Esther Nyhuis, and his pals Joy Johnson, Peter Barkley, and Gimlet.

Please do not send flowers. The family asks that memorials be made to Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2600 Pisgah Church Road, Greensboro, NC 27455 and/or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
