Frances Waldrop
SHELBY — Mrs. Frances Elizabeth Waldrop Shaw, 66, of 2205 Holly Lane died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at Hospice at Wendover.
She was born in Spartanburg, S.C. and graduated from Spartanburg High School, Class of 1956.
She retired from Fasco in 1996.
She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Ellie Morgan Waldrop, former husband, Dan Shaw, brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Georgia Lea Waldrop and sister Shirley Ann Waldrop.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Shaw Henry of the home and son-in-law Chuck Henry of Shelby; son, Charlie Shaw and his fiancée, Danielle McCarty of Charlotte; two sisters, Ruby Waldrop Vaughn and husband James Robert of Oldsmar Fla., Doris Waldrop Johnson and husband Gordon of Houston, Texas; a special granddaughter, Elizabeth Henry, Nicholas Shaw and Daniel Shaw.
The memorial service will be 11a.m. Wednesday at Zoar Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Gobble officiating.
Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 Tuesday evening at Cecil Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2205 Holly Lane, Shelby.

Jimmy Baker
EARL — Mr. Jimmy Dean Baker, 68, of 2908 Bettis Road died Friday, Dec. 20, 2004, and Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alan Sailors officiating.
Burial will be in New Hope Baptist Church with full military honors.
‘Bill’ Weaver
SHELBY — Mr. John William “Bill” Weaver passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004. He stoically battled health problems intermittently for several years, but his positive attitude and Christian faith always shined through. His legacy is one of quiet faith, unwavering love and compassion, as he always tried to assist others in need.
Born Oct. 12, 1928, he was the second son of the late Evan Steele and Grace Maud Kennedy Weaver. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Evan Kennedy (Pete) Weaver.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 57 years, Betty; daughters, Sharon W. Blanton (Neil) of Birmingham, Ala., Robyn W. Putnam (Richard) and Betsy W. Bryant (Terry), both of Shelby. He was lovingly known as “Gramps” to Ashley P. Tweed (Eric) of Raleigh, Emily P. Taft (Lee) of Durham, Dr. Elizabeth N. Blanton of Birmingham, Bethany J. Bryant, Fereby G. Bryant and William D. Bryant, all of Shelby, as well as a number of their friends. His surviving brother is Ben F. Weaver (Jean) of Hillsborough and brother-in-law is G. Edwin Turner Jr. (Susie) of Covington, Ga. Bill and Betty’s nephew, G. Edwin Turner III, lived with them for a few years during his youth and was like a son to Bill. He is also survived by nieces Deidre T. Slifko and Sheena T. Segrist.
Bill retired from the Shelby branch of the U.S. Postal Service. He held various other positions over the years, highlighted by his time as bus driver for Cleveland County’s Young Life youth trips to Frontier, Colo., and high school senior class trips.
Bill loved God, his family, his community and sports. He served his church for many years by serving on the offering committee. He was a proud member of Shelby’s 1945 American Legion Baseball World Champion Team. He was instrumental in forming what is now the Gardner-Webb University Bulldog Club and was inducted into the Bulldog Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in the creation of a permanent display for The Cleveland County Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sports Hall of Fame at Shelby City Park. Bill served for several years as an alderman on Shelby City Council, served on the Isothermal Planning Board and was an active member of the adult chapter of the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He served with several other community service organizations, including Cleveland Masonic Lodge No. 202 and Shelby Lodge No. 744.
A memorial service is today at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he was a member. The family will receive friends at the church directly following the service. Anyone wishing to share comments and memories at the service is invited to do so.

Ernest Sparks
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Ernest Carroll “Bit” Sparks, 76, of 843 Ellis Ferry Road, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
He was born in Gaffney to the late William Douglas Sparks and Nettie Hames Sparks. Mr. Sparks was a retired brick mason who worked for many years at Cherokee Masonry. He was a veteran of the Army in World War II and served as a military policeman. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, W.D. Sparks Jr., Harold Sparks, Lionel “Pie” Sparks and Ming Sparks; and two sisters, Iris Turner and Jean Sparks.
He is survived by three daughters, Traci Durham of Gaffney, Elizabeth Pierce of Ringgold, Ga., and Vicki Richardson of Gaffney; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Clary of Shelby.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church, with Dr. Edward McAbee officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Arthur Frady, Orville Durham, Alvin Durham, Wayne Durham, Keith Sparks and Ned Phillips.
The family received friends Monday evening and will continue to receive friends at the home of daughter Traci Durham, 148 River Tree Road, Gaffney.

CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Tammie Marie Keener Yoder Absher, 34, of 221 Oliver St., died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bobby Holtsclaw officiating. Inurnment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Harrill Anderson, 85, of Century Care Nursing Center, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, with the Rev. Doug Allen officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

ELLENBORO — Mr. James Melton Chapman, 68, of 499 Beam’s Mill Road, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at home.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harriett Memorial Free Will Baptist Church, with the Revs. Robert Harris and Ted Reynolds officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Annie Mae Gettys Vaughn, 91, of 125 Orange Run, formerly of Bethel Church Road, Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Oak Grove Health Care.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Vein Mountain Baptist Church in Marion, with the Revs. Barry Gouge, Doug Carpenter and Ralph Boyd officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Mark Kirby, 34, of 202 Oak St., died Dec. 11, 2004, in Winston-Salem.

Evelyn Hambright
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Evelyn Pursley Hambright, 95, of White Oak Manor, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at White Oak Manor.
Born in York, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James Meek and Emma McGill Pursley. She was a homemaker and a member of Boyce Memorial A.R.P. Church in Kings Mountain. She was also past president and member of the Open Gate Garden Club and a member of the Thursday Afternoon Book Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Hoyte Hambright; and a son, Freddy Hambright.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane Hambright Branton and husband, Robert E., of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Kay Hambright of Kings Mountain; a grandchild, Chip Hambright and wife, Lori, of Kings Mountain; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Cole.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Doug Petersen officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
