Jackie Lee
MARION — Jackie “Hammer” Lee, 50, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Haywood County, he was a beloved son, brother and uncle.
Born on April 14, 1954, he was the son of the late Wilburn Dwan Lee and Emma Jean Shelton Lee.
Surviving are two sisters, Christine Evans and Wanda Howard of Marion and two brothers, Wilburn Lee Jr. of Shelby and Doug Lee of Grover and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service is 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory with Brother John Crowder and Brother Arcemus Foxx officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends this evening at from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Berge Rutledge
CHERRYVILLE — Berge Sullivan Rutledge, 89, of 309 W. Ballard St., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Lincoln Medical Center.
Born Oct. 11, 1915, in West Virginia, he was a son of the late David A. Rutledge Sr. and Cora Blanche Sullivan Rutledge. He was retired as a chair builder with LaZ –Boy of Lincolnton.
He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Cherryville and served in the Navy and Coast Guard during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie K. Rutledge and two sisters, Ruth Propst and Helen Harwell.
Mr. Rutledge is survived by his wife, Ruth Ledwell Rutledge of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Hilda Huffman and Sandy and Ernest Snipes, all of Lincolnton; three brothers, David Rutledge Jr. and Andrew Rutledge of Crouse and Enloe Rutledge of Sherrills Ford; one sister, Blanche Tedder of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Ellen and Steve Smith of Laurinburg, Ann and Clay Ballard of Kernersville, Kelly and Tim Johnson and Cathy and Ron Hart, all of Lincolnton and Steve and Candice Huffman of Stocksdale; and five great-grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Smith, Lindsey and Bonnie Ballard and Noah Johnson.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Hartis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton.
The family will receive visitors tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Ralph Gantt
SHELBY — Mr. Ralph Dale Gantt, 78, of 608 Blythe Road died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Cleveland County to the late Paul David Gantt and Lora Elizabeth Blanton Gantt.
He was employed by the VA Hospital in Salisbury and was a member of Kadesh United Methodist Church and served in the Army during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Watson Gantt, brother Bill Gantt, two sisters, Ruth King and Helen Wright and a special friend, Freida Presnell.
Mr. Gantt is survived by a sister and two brothers-in-law, Nell Brackett and Wayne of Casar and Huston King of Vale; one sister-in-law, Connie Gantt of Cherryville; and numerous nieces and nephews and special neighbors.
The funeral is Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Kadesh United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Parsons, the Rev. Cecil Buff and Dr. Ryan Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Family will receive visitors at Stamey Funeral Home this evening from 6 until 8.

Mary Spoto
FALLSTON — Mrs. Mary Evelyn Lynch Spoto, 84, of 4112 Fallston Road died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Hospice of Wendover.
Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Bowie County, Texas, she was retired as a certified property manager.
She was a member of Ross Grove Baptist Church. She loved The Lord, her children, gardening and was an accomplished musician.
She was preceded in death by the father of her children, Robert W. Davis; her biological father, Lewis C. Ryan; biological mother, Oma Ryan; adoptive father, Luther “Clif” Clifton Lynch; adoptive mother, Eva Bernice Brooks Lynch; two sons, Robert W. Davis and James C. Davis; three brothers, Clarence Flowers, Louis Ryan Sanson and Pat Ryan Hawkins.
She is survived by two daughters, Ellen D. Fitzgerald and husband Charles of Fallston and Catherine D. Leckie of Fallston; 13 grandchildren and spouses, Denece F. Farris and Fred, Charles B. Fitzgerald Jr., Clifton F. Fitzgerald, Mark and Candice Fitzgerald, John M. Fitzgerald, John F. Leckie and Sigrid, Colin G. Leckie and Michelle, A. Kathleen Leckie, Fergus C. Leckie and Dawn, Vanessa Davis, James C. Davis and Yaslin, Robert W. Davis Jr., Christina Davis and 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Daggerhart officiating.
The burial will be private.
The family will receive friends anytime today and Tuesday at the home of Charles and Ellen Fitzgerald, 4112 Fallston Road.

James Daves
SHELBY — Mr. James Clingman Daves, 83, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at the Brian Center of Gastonia.
He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for Eastern Airlines.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Huber and Donald Daves.
He is survived by a son, James Edward Daves of Mount Holly; three sisters, Doris Turner of Shelby, Patsy Long of Spartanburg, S.C. and Elaine Whitaker of Shelby; three brothers, Homer Daves, Howard Daves and Jess Daves of Shelby, many nieces and nephews and a special niece, Joann Cothran and family.
The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Revs. Walter Daves, Edward Lee and Scott Henson officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Joanne Lackey
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Ms. Joanne Thurman Lackey, 64, of 1810 Spruce St., No. 117, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at home.
She was born May 20, 1940, in Wirtz, Va. She is the daughter of the late Aubrey H. and Lillian Lynch Thurman. She was retired from the DuPont Martinsville plant where she worked 31 years. She also worked at Amifibe for four years and played bridge.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Janice Wright of Vinton, Va., and Colleen Jones of St. Augustine, Fla.; a brother, William Penn Thurman of Wirtz; grandparents, Jim and Mary Lynch of Roanoke, Va.
She is survived by a special companion, Ronnie Burnette of Collinsville, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lena Nadine and Jeffrey Clay of Shelby; a son, Harry Ray Lackey of Collinsville, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Gwen and V.J. Usina of St. Augustine; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary “Buddy” Thurman and Jennifer Thurman of St. Augustine; a granddaughter; four nieces; seven nephews; one great-niece and three great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Martinsville with Minister Lawrence Harris officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service and other times at the home.

Clinzo Douglas
SHELBY — Mr. Clinzo Douglas, 66, of 1205 Borders Road, was born Aug. 27, 1938, in York County, S.C., to Ms. Annie Bell Choate Douglas and the late James “JD” Douglas.
He retired from Diamond Crystal Specially Co. in Wilmington, Mass. He was a member of the New England Pentecostal Church of God in Christ in Lowell, Mass., and he sang with the Golden Gates of Lowell. He later moved to Shelby, where he united with the Walls Memorial Baptist Church, and sang on the male choir.
He departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his father, by two brothers, Willie J. and Nathaniel Douglas.
He is survived, in addition to his mother, Ms. Annie Bell Choate Douglas of the home, by two daughters, Marjorie L. Douglas and Louis German of Virginia, who is presently serving in civilian service in Iraq, Sheila A. and John Sheppard of Springfield, Mass.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clinzo Jr. and Nadine Douglas and James F. and Pamela Douglas, all of Lowell; two brothers, Thomas Douglas of the home and Billy John of Lowell; a sister, Marjori D. Stapleton of Shelby and a host of other special family and friends.
The funeral will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. with visitation 30 minutes prior to the service at Walls Memorial Baptist Church. Pastor Nathaniel Craig will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

GASTONIA — Ms. Mischa TaKiyah Rhodes, 30, of 601 Apple St., died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at home.
