Lillie McKinney
MOORESBORO — Mrs. Lillie Mae Tate McKinney, 85, of 704 Winn Road, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late James Rubin and Florence Elizabeth Tate. She worked as a dietitian at Crawley Memorial Hospital and was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James McKinney.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Glenda McKinney, Buddy and Ruby McKinney and Joel and Donna McKinney, all of Mooresboro; a brother, Robert Tate of San Diego; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Revs. Buddy Morehead and Todd Bolin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery after the service and at other times at the home.

Mildred Doty
SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — Mrs. Mildred Cooke Doty, 83, formerly of Shelby, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, in Satellite Beach.
Born on April 17, 1920, in Maiden, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Eula Cooke. While residing in Shelby, she was employed for many years as assistant manager in the first local order-only Sears store. In Satellite Beach, she was employed for several years as a bookkeeper supervisor at Space Coast Credit Union. She was also a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hubert Doty; and a brother, Dennis Cooke.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Kirk Martin of Cape Coral, Fla.; three grandchildren, Sarah, Joel and Leah Martin; a sister, Thelma Burch of Sanford; eight nieces; five nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Christine Cooke of Shelby and Mildred Wesson of Blacksburg, S.C.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Nellie Logan Carpenter, 93, of 422 Gardner St., died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Century Care Nursing Home in Shelby.

PIKESVILLE, Md. — Mrs. Jane Frye Ware, 52, of 9113 Saracen Drive, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at home.

Mamie Long
SHELBY — Mrs. Mamie Price Long, 72, departed this life on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Crawley Memorial Hospital in Boiling Springs.
Born on June 27, 1932, in Lawndale, she was a daughter of the late Robert Sr. and Ella Price. She was known to many as Aunt Penny.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Price Jr.
After marrying Hubert “Odell” Shade, she lived in Youngstown, Ohio, where she was a loyal member of the Holy Trinity Baptist Church. From her 23 years of marriage, fondest memories of her life will be cherished by her three sons, Kenneth Shade of Youngstown, Leon Shade of Shelby and Stevie Shade (Leesa) of Cleveland, Ohio; three daughters, Amanda “Sister” Tucker of Cleveland, Audrey Shade of Youngstown and Marcell Jolly (Kenneth) of Shelby; and one stepson, Roger Shade (Pat) of Shelby.
In 1975, she moved to Cleveland, where she was a faithful member of the Lake Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. Later, she married her loving and devoted husband of 26 years, Drayton Long. From this union she became a stepmother to two sons, James E. Long of Cleveland and Emmanuel Long (Shalnita) of Sagamore Hills, Ohio; and three daughters, Jackie Long and Tammy Long, both of Cleveland, and Kimberly Long of Earl.
After relocating to Shelby in 1983, she enjoyed her hobbies of cooking, fishing, traveling, baseball, gardening and playing Bid Wiz. Those who knew Mamie knew her to be a loving, caring, thoughtful and dependable person. Not only a dedicated mother to her own children, she took care of many others. She served on the deaconess board and in the Senior Choir at Mount Calvary Baptist Church until her health failed her.
She is also survived by four brothers, Clyde Theodus Price (Jannie) and James E. Price, both of Shelby, and John Henry Price (Ethel) and Charles Price (Shari), both of Cleveland; five sisters, Marion Abrams and Brenda Hinton (Henry), both of Earl, Katie Norris (Charles), Anna Price and Jean Price, all of Shelby; two half-sisters, Sandra Denise McGill of Charlotte and Karen Brown of Greenville, S.C.; four generations of grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor M. Lamont Littlejohn officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Jerry Potter
MOORESBORO — Mr. Jerry Walter Potter, 59, of 2508 Camp Creek Church Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at home.
Born in Rutherford County, he was the son of Hoyle and Mary Frances Hamrick Potter. He was a retired welder, an Army veteran of the Vietnam era, a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church and a member of Cliffside Masonic Lodge No. 460.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Potter and Barry Potter.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Donna Crowe Potter of the home; one daughter, Nicole Potter of the home; a grandson, Tyler Potter of the home; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Camp Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Steve Durham, Ernie Cole and Paul Sorrells officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Jessie Davis
SHELBY — Mr. Jessie Otis Davis, 79, of 223 Lily St., died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on Nov. 22, 1924, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Willie Baxter Davis and Lillian Bowen Davis. He retired from the Lily Mill and was a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church. He coached the Lily Mill and church softball teams for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Mae Hess; two brothers, J.D. Davis and Willie Davis Jr.; five sisters, Nina Davis Beaver, Lona Davis Sisk, Lillie Pearl Davis, Marjorie Davis Humphries and Grace Davis Richards; and four grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Geneva Osborne Davis of the home; three sons, Jessie Ray Davis and wife, Louise, Stephen Marshall Davis and Billy “Randy” Davis, all of Shelby; a daughter, Debbie Lynn Irvin and husband, Danny, of Shelby; a son-in-law, Ronnie Hess of Henrietta; a sister, Lizzie Davis Tritt of Shelby; a brother, Thurman Davis and wife, Helen, of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Tommy Buchanan and Billy Bowen officiating. Burial will follow in Big Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and at other times at the home.

Barbara Hamrick
SHELBY — Mrs. Barbara Ann Bolick Hamrick, 42, of 109 Hatcher Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born on Dec. 9, 1961, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of Peggy Ann Watts Bolick of Shelby and the late Bobby Joe Bolick. She was a merchandise stocker at Sears and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 28 years, Ronald Lee Hamrick of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina and Matt Gibson of Shelby; a brother, Jody Wayne Bolick of Hudson; and a sister, Penny Ellen Holliman of St. Pauls.
The funeral will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Tapp officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 5 to 7.
Herbert Queen
SHELBY — Mr. Herbert “Herb” Queen, 68, of 2218 S. Post Road, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at home.
Born on Nov. 9, 1935, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Charles Lee Queen and Naomi Thrift Queen. He was a retired truck driver.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Lee Garner.
He is survived by a son, Joe Garner of Shelby; three daughters, Marla Garner of Grover, and Brenda Garner and Ginger Garner of Shelby; two sisters, Alene Lang of East Point, Ga., and Pastor Linda Franklin of Cherryville; and three grandchildren, Adam Lee Bowen, Taylor Garner and Erinn Garner.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Revs. Eugene Bumgardner and Johnny Owens officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church’s new cemetery site on Christopher Road.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Marla Garner, 243 Pinewood Drive, Grover.

SHELBY — Mr. Alex Junior Robinson, 60, of 312 Kellom Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at home.

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — Mrs. Charlotte Miller Mumford, formerly of Shelby, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, in New Jersey.
The funeral is today at 10 a.m. at Nesbitt Funeral Home in Englewood, N.J. Quiet hour will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Baxter Guffey
LAKE CITY, Fla. — Mr. Baxter Weldon Guffey, 80, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Shands at Lake Shore Hospital.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Arvil and Macie Ensley Guffey. He was a Marine veteran of World War II, serving from 1941 to 1946. He retired from Lake City Veterans Administration Hospital after 24 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Buddy, Reid, Roy and Garland Guffey; and two sisters, Mary Willie Poteat and Dorothy G. Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel McEntire Guffey; two daughters, Kimberly K. Guffey of Dublin, Texas, and Bonnie Guffey Giusti of Wellborn, Fla.; two granddaughters, Amelia Ann Giusti and Olivia Baxter Giusti; three sisters, Valoree Harrill of Forest City, Dexter Delk of Shelby and Eunice Ramsey and husband, Robert, of Sunshine; and two brothers-in-law, Jocephus Poteat and Robert Smith.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McMahan’s Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Crain officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service.
