CASAR — Mr. Hazel Donald “Curley” Sigmon, 75, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby.

Dorcus Howard
SHELBY — Mrs. Dorcus M. Howard, 92, of 1613 N. Oak Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on Aug. 19, 1912, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Columbus Alexander Melton and Cellie Crowder Melton. She was a homemaker and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years with the beginner’s department.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Patterson and Mary Sue Farinholt; and two brothers, Billy Gene Melton and William Melton.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Lewis A. Howard of the home; a daughter, Ruby Queen of Shelby; six sisters, Lucille Beheler, Ray Carlton, Ruth Hamrick, Betty Yelton and Madge Lane, all of Shelby, and Pauline Tessner and husband, Bill, of Blacksburg, S.C.; a granddaughter, Carolyn Ivester and husband, Jim, of Lawndale; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leland Kerr officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church an hour before the service and at other times at the home.

James Poston
SYLVA — Mr. James (Jay) Poston, 48, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at home.
Born in Franklin, he was the son of Carolyn Higdon Head of Durham and the late James Osborne Poston of Shelby.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Holly Poston Cruickshank of Mooresville; other siblings, John Head and Ann Head Briggs of Winston-Salem; and his stepmother, Aurelia Poston of Shelby.
A memorial service celebrating his life and his great faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is today at 1 p.m. at the Higdonville Baptist Church in Franklin.

Romeo Rollins
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Romeo Max Rollins, 66, of 169 Junie Road, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Medical Center.
A celebration of life service will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Frazier officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at White Columns Funeral Service in Gaffney and at other times at the home.
Helen Brackett
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Ward Brackett, 91, of 206 W. Main St., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born on Feb. 23, 1913, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late William Ward and Mamie Moten Blanton Ashley. Mrs. Brackett was a homemaker and a member of Lawndale United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lawrence Brackett; a son, William Ray Brackett; a grandson, William “Bill” Bruce Hord Jr.; a son-in-law, Grady Allen; a brother, Robert Ward; two sisters, Madeline Ward and Lurene Cooke; three half-brothers, Gerald Ashley, James Ashley Jr. and Ivey Lee Ashley; and a half-sister, Ruby Bridges.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Phyllis Brackett of Lawndale; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Marlene Allen of Clarksville, Ga., Shirley and Bruce Hord, Diane and Harry Mauney and Patty and Mike Hamrick, all of Shelby, and Betty and Dennis Towery and Linda and Wayne Blackburn, all of Lawndale; a half-brother and his wife, Bill and Betty Ashley of Fallston; a half-sister and her husband, Joyce and Maynard Tesseneer of Shelby; three sisters-in-law, Edith Ashley and Edith Brackett, both of Lawndale, and Marjorie Ashley of Shelby; 14 grandchildren and 13 spouses, Andy and Donna Allen, Angela and Danny Young, Donna and Dan Boggs, Mark and Billie Brackett, Bobby and Terri Hord, Rachel and Todd Addison, Patrick and April Mauney, Jay and Lisa Mauney, Dennis Towery Jr. and Kathleen, John and Jessica Towery, Barry Blackburn Jr. and Debbie, Wendy and Michael Patterson, Traci and Allen Proctor and Jason Hamrick; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Lawndale United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Ben Davis and Marti Halliburton officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Palm Tree United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Jane Ware
PIKESVILLE, Md. — Mrs. Jane Frye Ware, 52, of 9113 Saracen Drive, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at home.
Born on Dec. 13, 1951, in Albemarle, she was a daughter of the late Robert Earl Frye and Carolyn Earnhardt Frye. She was employed in sales at Haverty Furniture in Charlotte for more than 20 years.
She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Thomas Wray Ware of the home; two sons, James Michael and wife, Melissa Moore Gates, of Westerville, Ohio, and Richard Allen Gates of Houston, Texas; a sister, Kathy Hinson and husband, Edwin, of Candor; and a niece, Livia Hinson of Candor.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Arthur Ware officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 to 11:15 a.m.

Jack Mayhew
SHELBY — Mr. Jack Benny Mayhew, 55, of 3125 W. Zion Church Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on Oct. 17, 1949, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Benjamin Ira Mayhew and Girtle Wood Mayhew. He served in the Army and retired from Kosa. He was a beloved father, friend and fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathon Zeb Mayhew.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Costner and husband, Jerry, of Shelby; two brothers, James S. Mayhew and wife, Mary, of Shelby and Donald Lee Mayhew and wife, Linda, of Cherryville; three sisters, Carol Mayhew McSwain and husband, Toy, of Orlando, Fla., Linda Mayhew Erby and husband, Tom, of Cherryville and Cathy Mayhew Van Buren and husband, David, of Shelby; a stepson, Roger Delane Davis of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Jackie L. Black and husband, Billy, of Shelby; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roger Sr. and Amy Davis, Ronnie and Becky Bolin, Eddie and Larry Burgess and Zeb Wood.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Faine Morrison and Herman Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 7:30 and at other times at the home of his daughter, 1308-3 Barbee Road, Shelby.

Lucille Summitt
NEBO — Mrs. Lucille J. Summitt, 85, of The McDowell House Adult Care in Nebo, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at McDowell Hospital.
Born on Nov. 14, 1918, in Kings Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Pinkney and Zurrie Lewis Jones.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Summitt.
She is survived by two brothers, J. P. Jones of Lawndale and Bill Jones of Gaffney, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Wallace Grove Baptist Church Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Nellie Carpenter
SHELBY — Mrs. Nellie Logan Carpenter, 93, of 422 Gardner St., departed this life Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Century Care Nursing Home in Shelby.
She was born in Rutherford County to the late George and Mary Forney Logan.
At an early age, she accepted Christ at Mount Nebo Church in Lake Lure and became a loyal and faithful member of Green Bethel Baptist Church in Boiling Springs. Later upon relocation, she joined Hopper’s Chapel Baptist Church in Shelby. She was employed in domestic service for more than 50 years. She was an active member of the NAACP and a volunteer for the March of Dimes organization.
She leaves her legacy as an ambassador of good will and cheer, a life of sharing God’s word and helping others, especially with her favorite quotation, “Remember what the Bible says.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Furman Carpenter Sr.; four sons, Willie Lee Carpenter, Andrew Lincoln Carpenter, Columbus Daniel Carpenter and Furman Carpenter Jr.
She leaves to mourn three daughters, Ineta Carpenter of Shelby, Amanda Mills of Columbus, Ohio, and Rosetta Wilson of Atlanta; three daughters-in-law, Alsona Carpenter, Isabell Carpenter and Mary Lois Carpenter; one sister, Ossie Logan Hamilton of Detroit; 11 grandsons, Terrace Carpenter, Landrym Carpenter, Danny Carpenter, Robert Carpenter, Gary McIntosh, Jason Mills, Matthew Mills, Simon Mills, Ridge Leoni, Donald Roseboro (Buster) and Monte Roseboro; four granddaughters, Myra Edwards, Ruth Jones, Natasha Wilson and Deborah Gentry; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hopper’s Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Coleman officiating. There will be a 30-minute quiet time before the service. Burial will follow in Green Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. at Dockery’s Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Ineta Carpenter, 322 Gold St., Apt B, Shelby.
Charlie Bumgardner
SHELBY — Mr. Charlie Bumgardner, 65, of 1228 New Crest Lane, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late William F. and Lela Atkins Bumgardner. He attended Cleveland Community College, graduated magna cum laude from Kings College and was listed in Who’s Who. He served in the Army and was president and co-owner of Value Incentives Inc. of Kings Mountain. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Open Door Class.
He was an American history buff and enjoyed saltwater fishing. He was a quiet and humble gentleman who gave freely to others and helped anyone in need. He was also known to have a dry sense of humor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Bill Bumgardner; and two sisters, Mary Rinehardt and Joy Celichowski.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Rebecca Lee Bumgardner; two sisters, Joann Magee of Shelby and Nancy Olson of West Bend, Wis.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, with Drs. Timothy Sims and J. M. Ezell officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
