John Seagle
LAWNDALE — Mr. John Carpenter Seagle, 61, of 1927 Carpenter-Hoyle Road, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at his home.
He was born May 8, 1943, in Cleveland County.
Mr. Seagle worked in maintenance at Cleveland Community College and was a member of Carpenter’s Grove Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Willie and Ima Carpenter Seagle; his paternal grandparents, Robert Perry and Docia Costner Seagle; and his maternal grandparents Samuel Tate and Charlcy Sain Carpenter.
He was survived by his son, Joel Seagle; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel “Sammy” and Patricia Seagle of Lawndale; a former daughter-in-law, Karen Stroud of Lawndale; a sister, Miss Mary Jane Seagle of Lawndale; three grandchildren, Sara Seagle, Jay Seagle and Austin Seagle.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Carpenter’s Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Welch officiating. The burial will follow at the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
The family will receive friends this evening from, 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston. At other times the family will be at the home of Mr. Carpenter’s son, Sammy and Patricia Seagle, 2118 Curt Ledford Road in Lawndale.

Howard McSwain
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Howard McSwain Sr., 77, of 803 Phillip Drive, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Hospice Facility in Shelby.
He was born in Rutherford County, son of the late Butler and Gladys Littlejohn McSwain, husband of the late Frances Phyllis Sears McSwain.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Metros Davis.
He was retired from New Haven Foundries in New Haven, Mich., and served in the Army during the Korean War.
He was survived by his sons; Howard McSwain Jr., of Mount Clemens, Mich., Corey McSwain and wife Katherine of Honolulu, Stacy McSwain and wife Cathy of Charlotte, Lloyd McSwain of Shelby, daughters; Camille McSwain of Kings Mountain, Gladys McSwain of Boiling Springs, Tari Ross, of Shelby, Katherine McSwain, of Detroit, Michigan, Brenda Matthews of Arlington, Texas; a sister Katherine Petty and husband Sam, of Boiling Springs; 43 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.

VALE — Mr. Rondale Evan Hartman, 65, of 2370 Overland Lane, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at his home.
The funeral is this evening at 7 at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Annie Mae Green, 96, of White Oak Manor, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at her home.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Charles Christmas
FAYETTEVILLE — Mr. Charles Harold Christmas, 85, of the North Carolina State Veterans Home, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at the home.
A funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Mark Elmore officiating.
Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.
Entombment will be at Cleveland Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mike Borders Jr.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Mr. Mike L. Borders Jr., 82, of 309 Gayle St., North Myrtle Beach, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Grand Strand Regional Hospital in Myrtle Beach.
A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late Michael L. and Dona Cline Borders of Shelby.
Mr. Borders was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his license from the Board of Pharmacy in 1943. He was licensed to practice pharmacy in both North and South Carolina and was a member of the Golden Mortar KAPPA Pharmaceutical Fraternity for 50 years. He served as a pharmacist in Chadbourn until his retirement.
He served in World War II as a pharmacist in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters.
He was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church of North Myrtle Beach.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the Surf Club of Myrtle Beach and the Whiteville Country Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ambrose Borders, and three sisters, Bernice Hamrick, Hessentine Johnson and Laura Mae Self.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary Sue Carroll of Wilmington and Cleo Worrell of Shelby; and a brother, Cline W. Borders of Shelby.
His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lee Funeral Home in Little River, S.C. The family will receive friends after the service.
His burial will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Mary Love Bettis Page, 85, of 2107 Shelby Highway, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at White Oak Manor of Kings Mountain.
A Cherokee County native, she was the daughter of the late A.A. and Zelia Hopper Bettis Sr. She was a public school teacher and taught 48 years in schools in Lattimore, Marion, Gastonia, Grover and Kings Mountain. She retired from Kings Mountain District Schools and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Earl, where she taught Sunday school and also taught at First Presbyterian Church, Kings Mountain. She was a homemaker as well.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Howard, A.A. “Jack” Jr., Randolph “Ralph,” Billy, Gene and Donald Bettis.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James H. Page of the home; a sister, Leola Bettis Bowman of Granite Falls; a brother, Allen Bettis of Browns Summit; a number of nieces and nephews; and seven sisters-in-law.
Her funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. David Gordon and Richard Little officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service in the church Fellowship Hall.

ELLENBORO — Mrs. Pat Towery, 69, of Campfield Church Road, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at home.

Keith Walker
FALLSTON — Mr. David Keith Walker, 49, of 127 Delaware Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born July 18, 1955, a son of the late Delbert Quillen Walker and Mrs. Zena Pruitt Walker of Fallston.
He worked as a mechanic at Tedder Motor Company and was an active member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher of the Middle Adult Class and served in various other positions.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Cheri White Walker of the home; two daughters, Jamie and Jessica Walker of the home; and a sister, Sandra Walker of Fallston.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest W. Speagle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.

SHELBY — Ms. Beatrice Roseboro Hamilton, 68, of 709 LeGrande St., Apt. C, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Essie A. Gidney, 81, of 841 Lincoln Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at White Oak Manor.

John Felts III
WINSTON-SALEM — Mr. John Harvey Felts III, M.D., 80, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004.
Born on April 2, 1924, in Lumberton, “Jack” was a son of the late John Harvey Felts Jr. and Mollie Bell Hollowell Felts. He served in the Army during and after World War II and was a graduate of Wofford College and the Medical University of South Carolina. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, he joined the faculty of Bowman Gray School of Medicine (now Wake Forest University School of Medicine). During his tenure at the medical school, he specialized in nephrology. He started the first renal dialysis program in Winston-Salem, and with the late Richard Myers, M.D., began the kidney transplant program. In addition, he served as Associate Dean of Admissions from 1978-1986. He retired in 1993 as Professor Emeritus of Medicine. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, an emeritus member of the American Society for Artificial Organs and a 50-year member of the North Carolina Medical Society. He served as editor of the North Carolina Medical Journal from 1974-1982. He was a frequent contributor to medical journals about research and clinical studies and after retirement continued to publish articles focusing on the history of medicine. He was recently honored by the endowment of the John Harvey Felts III, M.D., Chair in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Nephrology, at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and was an integral part of the Whitefield Sunday School Class for 40 years. He was on the board of directors of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Home and was a long-time member of the Torch Club of Winston-Salem, of which he had been president. He was a member of the Wachovia Historical Society, serving as president for two years and beginning the quarterly bulletin, “The Wachovia Tract.” He was a true scholar with a lifelong love of learning. He was well read and known among his friends and family for his wit and his ability to provide quick, accurate answers to questions about many subjects.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth (Kitty) Burrus Felts, formerly of Shelby; two daughters, Betsy Felts Ellison and husband, Mark F. Ellison, M.D., of Athens, Ga. and Margaret Felts of Winston-Salem; and two grandsons, Mark F. Ellison Jr. and David Felts Ellison, both of Athens.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends Friday at Volger Reynolds Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m.
