SHELBY — Mrs. Gladys Lindsay, 88, formerly of Sterling House, Shelby, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at White Oak Manor.

Clay-Barnette Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Mary Terry

MOORESBORO — Mrs. Mary Martha Willis Terry, of Pebble Drive, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.

McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home of Cliffside will announce arrangements.

Alice Mitchem

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Alice Boyd Mitchem, 92, of 213 W. King St., died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in Charlotte.

Born in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Miles and Eliza Threat Boyd. She was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as mother of the church. She was also on the kitchen and flower committee and in the Nancy Caldwell Missionary Circle. She was a graduate of Davidson High School. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Adah Chapter No. 7 and Heroine of Jericho Queens Mary Court No. 5.

She is survived by three sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.A. Feemster officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The body may be viewed today at J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home from 2 to 6 p.m.

The family will receive friends at 211 W. King St.

Mablene Francis

STANLEY— Mrs. Mablene Surratt Francis, 52, of 2039 Hines Circle Road, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fancy Hill Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church an hour before the service and at other times at the home.

Ebony & White’s Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Gene McDaniel

SHELBY — Mr. Gene William McDaniel, 66, of 896 Cedarline Drive, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Hospice of Wendover.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Bonnie Wortman McDaniel of Casar and the late Paul McDaniel. He was a retired plumber with Perry Plumbing of Gastonia. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church in Casar and attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was also in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 36 years, Vertie Norman McDaniel; three brothers, Luther McDaniel and wife, Dorothy, of Morganton, Bobby Joe McDaniel and wife, Jackie, and Steve McDaniel and wife, Etta, all of Casar; two sisters, Helen Lail and husband, Arnold, of Williamsburg, Va., and Martha Smith and husband, Gerald “Doc”, of Casar.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Tim Sims officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park, with U.S. Army military honors.

The body will be placed in the chapel 30 minutes before the service.

Pallbearers will be the Delbert Lee Sunday School Class of Bethel Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 5 to 7.

N. P. Guffey Jr.

SHELBY — Mr. Noah Patton (N.P.) Guffey Jr., 86, of 111 Guffey Drive, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at home.

Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late N.P. “Bud” Guffey Sr. and Margaret Sparks Guffey. He retired from Mauney Hosiery and was also a farmer. He was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, where he was in the Adult Three Men’s Sunday School Class.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raleigh and Gail Guffey; three sisters, Myrtle G. Daves, Katie Lou G. McSwain and Mollie G. Anthony; and a great-grandson, Mason McCulloch.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gertie Hamrick Guffey of the home; a son and his wife, Mitchell D. and Susan Guffey of Boiling Springs; a granddaughter and her husband, Heidi G. and John McCulloch III of Boiling Springs; a grandson and his wife, Joshua C. and Lizzie Guffey of Boiling Springs; a sister, Betty Jolley of Cliffside; and a great-granddaughter, Mollie McCulloch.

The funeral is tonight at 6:30 at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, with Dr. Carroll Page, and the Revs. Keith Dixon and Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends in the church Life Enrichment Center after the service and at other times at 110 Guffey Drive, Boiling Springs.

Memorials may be made to Mason Hayes McCulloch Playground Fund at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, P.O. Box 917, Boiling Springs, NC 28017.

‘Ronnie’ Patterson

SHELBY — Mr. Ronald “Ronnie” Dean Patterson, 56, of 1207 A North Gate Drive, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 26, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1948 in Cleveland County, he was a son of Syble Sisk Patterson of the home, and the late James D. Patterson. He was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles H. Patterson.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Don (Bobbi) Gibson of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Tammi and Lynn Dodson of Wilmington; nephews, Ryan and Wesley Dodson of Wilmington; and niece Dana Patterson of Lexington, Ky.

The funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Reed Jones, Don McSwain and Ron Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

The family will receive friends Thursday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. and at other times at the home of his aunt, Shirley Stinchcomb, 700 W. Warren St., Shelby.

Janice Harding

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Janice Boheler Harding, 67, of 905 Margrace Road, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at home.

The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Mike Daughrity officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home.

Millicent Lewis

SHELBY — Mrs. Millicent Lipscomb Lewis, 71, of 503 Carolina Ave., died Monday July 26, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 2, 1933, in Shelby, to the late Cecil Simpson and the late Sam Nivens.

Mrs. Lewis was educated in Shelby schools. She retired from Bernhardt Industries after 22 years of service and was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her brothers, Clyde and W.C. Lipscomb.

She leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Ernestine Hamrick of Shelby; her son, Leonard “Charles” Lipscomb of the home; one daughter, Nadine Lipscomb of Atlanta; four grandchildren that were like her own children, Anissa Surratt (Cedric) of Charlotte, Marik “Dude” Lipscomb of Cherryville, Aric Tikki Lipscomb of Shelby and Khalid Lipscomb of Chapel Hill; her precious great-grandchildren, Treshawn Archie, Diamond Lipscomb, Jalen Lipscomb, Malik Lipscomb, Ahric Lipscomb (Bridgeat), Janya Laborn, all of Shelby, Sanai Lipscomb of Cherryville, Shayvonne Surratt of Richmond, Va., Cedric Surratt Jr., Alexis Surratt and Granny’s little man, Amahri Surratt, all of Charlotte; one niece, Vanessa Lipscomb of Washington, D.C.; and John Woods, whom she considered a son.

The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. M. Lamont Littlejohn officiating. Burial is at Webb Memorial Lawns.

The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Viola McEntyre

SHELBY — Mrs. Viola Pruitt McEntyre, 86, of White Oak Manor, departed this life into a new heavenly life on Tuesday, July 27, 2004.

Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Minnie Martin and R. P. Pruitt. She was a homemaker and a member of Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Avery Pruitt; a sister, Mae Sanders; a son, Donald McEntyre; and a grandson, Donnie McEntyre.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy McEntyre and his wife, Patsy, of Shelby; a daughter, Linda Sue Johnson and her husband, Leroy, of Randleman; a brother, Otto Pruitt of Shelby; two sisters, Catherine Young of Bessemer City and Marie Haynes of Shelby; grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Cantrell, Jeffrey S. McEntyre, Jessica E. Champion, Rhea Kennedy, Mark Johnson and Leanne England; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Carper officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service.

LAWNDALE — Mr. Chad Beauford Smith, 89, of P.O. Box 534, Cherryville, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Hospice of Wendover.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with Tom Nussbaum and Kelvin Naef officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service.
