William Hutley Jr.
SHELBY — William Oliver Hutley Jr. 24, of 321 Washburn Switch Road, died Sunday July 4, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Hutley was born Aug. 11, 1979. He was the son of Tempie H. Calloway of Shelby and William Oliver Hutley Sr. of Kingstown. He graduated from Crest High School in 1999 and was a member of Ramseur Baptist Church.
His grandfathers preceded him in death: Raleigh W. Hayes and Odell Hutley.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Breneva E. Johnson of the home; and brother, Delmar M. Calloway of the home; grandmothers, Brenda D. Evans of Shelby, Lucille R. Hutley of Kingstown; great-grandmother, Geneva Brooks of Kingstown; two special uncles and aunts, Raleigh W. and Paprecea Hayes Jr. and Thomas and Patricia Hutley; special friends, Kerry Hammonds of Shelby and Carnishia Davis of Mooresboro; and a host of other uncles, aunts, relatives and friends.
The family is at the home of Lucille Hutley, 1813 Petty Road, Kingstown.
The homegoing services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Ramseur Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Ramseur, pastor, and the Rev. Eugene Pryor officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church a half-hour before services. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Susie Byers
GROVER — Mrs. Ava Sue Dover Byers, 52, of 108 Star Drive, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at home.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, with the Revs. Robert Haynes and David Saldo officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Grover Cemetery.
The family received friends Tuesday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the home.
Mary Smith
BESSEMER CITY — Mrs. Mary E. Smith, 65, of 552 Old N.C. 277 Road, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born May 10, 1939, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel L. and Daisy Wilson Edwards. She retired from Burlington Industries in Mount Holly and was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Gastonia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Franklin Smith; and sisters, Erie Cantrell and Louise Ramsey.
She is survived by two sons, Danny C. Harris of Bessemer City and Thomas E. Harris of Kings Mountain; three daughters, Peggy H. Brown of Lincolnton, Tracie H. Morton of Bessemer City and Mazzie DeLancey of Reidsville; two brothers, John Edwards of Rutherford County and Joe Edwards of Lattimore; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is tonight at 7 at Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leo Kuykendall officiating. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Dallas.
The family will receive friends at the church an hour before the service tonight.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Charles Everette Baldwin Sr., 85, of 142 Chase High Road, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cecil Price officiating. Burial will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight at Harrelson Funeral Home from 7 to 9 and at other times at the home of a grandson, 466 Dixie Trail Drive.
Mildred Metcalf
SPINDALE — Mrs. Mildred Poteat Metcalf, 72, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Boiling Springs.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Spindale Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Perry Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City.
The family will receive friends tonight at Crowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Richard E. Byrd, 69, of 267 Hardin Road, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.

Ruth Cloninger
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Bessie Ruth Williams Cloninger, 91, of 128 Garver St., died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Marti Halliburton officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8 and at other times at the home of Jane and Dick Hord, 529 Oak Grove-Clover Hill Church Road, Lawndale.
Felix Gee
LEXINGTON — Mr. Felix Otis Gee, 90, a long-time resident and civic leader, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Fitzgerald Health Center, Arbor Acres, in Winston-Salem.
Born Aug. 1, 1914, in Shelby, he was the son of the late Felix Otis and Weeta Presnell Gee. He graduated from Davidson College in 1935. After teaching at Lattimore High School in Cleveland County for two years, he came to Lexington and was an executive with Dacotah Cotton Mills Inc. until his retirement in 1982.
He was in the Naval Reserve as lieutenant (j.g.) in the Pacific area during World War II. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, church treasurer and elder. During this time, he assisted in the organization of Meadowview Church, was elected moderator of Presbytery three times, was three times a commissioner to General Assembly, was a trustee of Presbyterian Home, High Point, and Lees McRae College, Banner Elk.
He served as president of Lexington Kiwanis Club, the YMCA, Lexington Memorial Hospital, United Way and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a member of the Lexington School Board and director of Mid-State Tile Co.
He was involved in the founding of Davidson County Community College and served as trustee for 18 years, 10 as chairman. In 2004, he served as the Honorary Chairman of the Celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the college.
In 1960, he was presented Lexington’s Distinguished Citizen Award.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred McKiney Gee of Arbor Acres, Winston-Salem; two daughters, Mildred Gee Akers of Orange Park, Fla. and M. Elizabeth Gee of Winston-Salem; and two grandsons, Michael Gordon Akers of Jacksonville, Fla., and William Gee Akers of Orlando, Fla.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Jim Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in the Lexington City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at Davidson Funeral Home.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Robert E. Davis, 68, of 148 Astrid Lane, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.

CAROLEEN — Mrs. Demaris James Lane, 90, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Trey Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service.
Susanna Barthalis
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Susanna Mae Yuhasz Barthalis, 95, of 149 Dunes Drive, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Hospice of Wendover.
Mrs. Barthalis was born in Hungary. She was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church. Before coming to Cleveland County, she was a member of Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Ohio. She was a member of the Ellbrook Chapter of Eastern Star for more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis William Barthalis; a grandson, Matthew Z. Barthalis; two sisters, Elizabeth Vargo and Julia Hudak; and a brother, Andrew Yahasz.
She is survived by a son, Louis W. Barthalis Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Temperance, Mich.; a daughter, Barbara Csobady and husband, John, of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren, Karen Lynn Sweezy, Timothy Csobady, Christy Lynn and Abbey Mae Barthalis; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jordan and Melisa Sweezy and Taylor and Ana-Len Csobady.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, with pastor David Nolan officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Lucious Gass
LAWNDALE — Bishop Lucious Gass, 81, of 150 Potato House Road, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
He was a son of the late Jerome and Mattie Florence Johnson Gass and a native of Bishopville, S.C. He was a member of Pentecostal Apostolic Church of Christ, where he was the assistant pastor, a Sunday school teacher and Bible study leader. He retired from National Tool and Manufacturing after 28 years. He was also formerly employed by Burns Security, where he worked for 10 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Ann Gass; for brothers, Joseph, Lawrence, Robert and Dennis Gass; and one sister, Blanche Mannix.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Norris Gass of the home; six sons, Thomas Lee Gass (Sandra) of Largo, Md., Paul Norris Gass (Bernice) of Newark, N.J., Kenneth James Gass (Linda) of Moreno Valley, Calif., Recardo Dewitt Gass (Jamie) of Linden, N.J., David Rufus Gass (Felicia) of Piscataway, N.J., and Robert Wayne Gass (Catherine) of Clinton, Md.; three daughters, Cynthia Louise Jones (James) of Lawndale, Catherine Gass Smith of Capital Heights, Md., and Sharon Denise Armour (Leonard of Newark; one brother, Jerome Gass Jr. (Madeline) of Rahway, N.J.; one sister, Louise Leach of Cranford, N.J.; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Harold Norris (Harriett) of Detroit, Mich.; three other sisters-in-law, Helen Boxley, Vernie Cannon and Agnes Ford, all of Detroit; and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Pentecostal Apostolic Church of Christ, with Bishop W.A. Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Temple Holiness Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Ruth Cloninger
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Bessie Ruth Williams Clonninger, 91, of 128 Garver St., died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A Cleveland County native, she was born Feb. 19, 1913, a daughter of the late Dorus Cobb “Jack” and Anna Mae Guinn Williams.
She retired from PPG Industries and attended First United Methodist Church of Lawndale, where she was a former teacher of the Weaver Sunshine Class. Mrs. Cloninger was the former site manager for the Bliss Center’s meals program and a former member of the Cleveland Mills Womans Club and the Upper Cleveland Senior Citizens. She was a very caring and loving person who shared her faith as well as her means with her community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Russell Cloninger; a son, Donald Ray Cloninger; a grandson, Jeff Cloninger; three brothers, Ned, Ray and Bob Williams; and a sister, Mary Lou Reid.
She is survived by a son, Harrill Cloninger of Chapel Hill; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Dick Hord of Lawndale; a grandson and his special friend, Richard Hord III and Alisha Puckett of Rock Hill, S.C.; and a granddaughter and her husband, Megan and David Gorski of Blacksburg, S.C.
Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marti Halliburton officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
