The family will be at the home of her daughter, Gloria Johnson, 5474 Highway 27 West in Vale.

Annie Owens

RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Annie Mae Sigmon Owens, 93, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.

The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Oak Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Washburn and Dorsey Funeral Home.

Paul Henning Jr.

EMERALD ISLE — Mr. Paul Morris Henning Jr., 77, died Thursday June 17, 2004, at home.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dana Henning Franklin and Dr. Cliff Franklin of Shelby; a daughter, Deborah Lynn Henning of Emerald Isle; grandchildren, Drake, Tyler, Ashton and Aubrey Franklin, all of Shelby, and Lindsey Owings and Carrie Hampton.

The memorial service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Munden Funeral Home, 2112 Arendell St., Morehead City.

Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Christene Glover

DALLAS — Mrs. Christene Margaret Spencer Glover, 81, of 601 N. Holland St., died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Century Care of Gastonia.

A native of Gaffney, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Clauford Lonzo Spencer and Allene Lilly Eaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. W. “Bill” Glover, one brother and one sister.

She is survived by a daughter, Pam Hoffman of Gastonia; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Sandy Glover of Kings Mountain; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Dallas Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sidney Epperson officiating.

Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Dallas Funeral Home on West Trade Street.

Theodore Hart

GROVER — Mr. Theodore Hart, 70, of 246 Roseborough Road, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Withrow’s Funeral Home in Kings Mountain will announce arrangements.

Eva Clark

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Ms. Eva Mary Clark, 88, of Summit Place, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at home.

The funeral service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hephzibah Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Jack Cooke and Lamar Creel officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 2:45 p.m. at the church fellowship hall.

Carpenter’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Schenck

SHELBY — Mr. John Franklin Schenck III, 82, of 132 Westfield Road, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

Born in Mecklenburg County, he was a graduate of Darlington Prep School and N.C. State University, where he earned a B.S. degree in textile engineering. He was a veteran of the Army during World War II, serving with the Third Army at D-Day, Normandy, France in 1944. He was manager of Double Shoals Yarn Mill and president of Cleveland Mills Power Co., retiring from Cleveland Mills in 1988. He was a true innovator in the textile industry, holding numerous patents for inventions in the process and production of knitting, bleaching and finishing technologies. He served on the boards of the North Carolina Textile Foundation and the Institute for Textile Technology. He also served on the board of Cleveland Community College for 34 years and served as its chairman for 22 years. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and a former member of Shelby Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Caldwell Schenck of the home; three sons, John Schenck and his wife, Helen, of Newberry, Fla., Randolph Schenck and his wife, Ingrid, of Portland, Ore., and James Schenck and his wife, Elizabeth, of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Susan Schenck of Carboro and Evelyn Bubar and her husband, Terry, of Black Mountain; a stepson, Kent Thornton Warren and his wife, Virginia, of McLean, Va.; a stepdaughter, Deanna Warren Rapp and her husband, Keith, of Greensboro; four grandsons, Christopher and Adam Schenck, Ryan McGinnis and Jacob Rapp; seven granddaughters, Kristin, Kathleen, Katrina, Ansley and Marta Schenck, and Ella and Anna Mager; and a great-grandson, Jackson Schenck.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lawndale United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marti Halliburton officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Board of Trustees of Cleveland Community College. Burial is private.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Horace Bowen

SHELBY — Mr. Horace Wilbur “Chub” Bowen, 75, of 142 Pearl Drive, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Spartan-burg (S.C.) Cancer Center.

Born in Cleveland County, he was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He worked in the textile industry and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur T. and Marcella Bowen; his wife, Martha Stroup Bowen; and 14 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by a son, Horace Michael “Mike” Bowen and wife, Lynn, of Gaffney, S.C.; four daughters, Sandra Phillips of Shelby, Jeanette Chandler and husband, Butch, of Lawndale, Brenda Zimmerman and husband, Danny, of Rockwell and Linda Crouse of Lincolnton; a brother, Quinn Bowen of Grover; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fredrick Memorial Gardens on Highway 11 in Gaffney.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

John Whitehair

SHELBY — Mr. John Welty Whitehair, 53, of 1442 Arlee Drive, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at home.

The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Ledford Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jackie Price officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Bob and Mary Coulter, 203 Southard St., Lawndale.

Virl Waldrop

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Virl Abrams Waldrop, 89, a former resident of J. Morgan St., died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Autumn Care Center, where she was a resident.

Born in Polk County, she and her late husband, Carl E. Waldrop owned and operated Waldrop’s Clothing in Forest City for many years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Rutherford Hospital Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Robert J. and Lillie Greenway Abrams.

She is survived by three daughters, Linda Dawson and her husband, Dave, of Sacramento, Calif., Jane W. Duffield and her husband, Ed, of Raleigh and Susan W. Williams and her husband, Gary, of Atlanta; a brother, Jim Abrams of Greer, S.C.; a sister, Sarah A. Davis of Shelby; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park, with Dr. Phillip W. Dunford officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Padgett and King Mortuary.

Sara Hobby

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Mrs. Sara Stroud Hobby, 63, president of Hobby Industries Inc. of Knoxville, entered into Heaven at 12:59 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, from the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Tennessee Hospital.

It is very important to mention how strong Sara has been through her battle with esophageal cancer since her diagnosis on Oct. 12, 2000. With each medical crisis since then and up until the end, we have watched our loving mother and wife rely on her faith to see her through each trial. Her faith, courage and positive attitude have been benchmarks for all who knew her. Sara was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in South Knoxville for 56 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W. J. and Blanche Stroud.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Hobby; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Hobby Ammons and Martin Ammons; daughter, Dr. Jill Hobby; brother and sister-in-law, Jennings and Frankie Stroud; a very precious person, Aunt Lillian Stroud of Ellenboro; extended family, Khen Huynh; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

The funeral is tonight at 7:30 in the Mount Olive Baptist Church main auditorium, with the Revs. Deron Cobb and Gary Armstrong and Dr. Doug White officiating. Burial will be alongside other family members at Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Friday at 1 p.m. in Ellenboro, following a brief service in the church sanctuary, with the Rev. Phil Bailey and Drs. Doug Stroud and Jim Richardson officiating.

Pallbearers will be Doug Stroud, Dusty Stroud, Joey Stroud, Lanny Stroud, Larry Stroud, Rusty Stroud, Scott Stroud, Steve Stroud, Billy Stroud, Ronnie Daves and Jerry Daves.

The family received friends Thursday in Knoxville.

Memorials may be made to the Special Friends at Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements and Berry Funeral Home is serving the family in Knoxville.

Vernie Louise Philbeck

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Vernie Louise Pryor Philbeck, 92, of 112 Jasper Drive, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Century Care of Cherryville.

Born in Cleveland County, she retired from Kings Mountain Hospital food service department and also worked in food service at Bethware School. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles G. and Emma Hullender Pryor; her husband, Jasper Newton Philbeck; a daughter, Betty Lou P. Longley; a grandson, Bobby Longley; two sisters, Ethel Champion and Mary Sue Goforth; and a brother, Will Pryor.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Arnold and Betty Philbeck, Maynard and Mrytha Philbeck and Roger and Judy Philbeck, all of Kings Mountain; a son-in-law, Glenn Longley of Palm Coast, Fla.; sisters, Lela Dixon and Mandy Davis of Kings Mountain and Ruby Reid of Gastonia; grandchildren, LeAnne and Mike Gann, Scott Philbeck and Laura and Todd Hewatt, all of Kings Mountain; and great-grandchildren, Kevin Gann, Heather Gann, Dylan Hewatt and Randy Hewatt.

The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Caulder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1022 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Ethel Huss

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Ethel Jeanette Garner Huss, 92, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in Shelby.

She was born in Lincoln County on Sept. 26, 1911. She worked in the textile industry and for the family-owned grocery store.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Garner and Effie Reynolds Garner Lynch; and her husband, Howard T. Huss.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Dellinger and husband, Wyatt, of Shelby and Marcene Wright and husband, Edwin, of Vale; granddaughters, Tonya Carpenter of Lincolnton, Diane Parkhurst of Madrid, Spain, and Nelson Dellinger of Shelby; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three stepgrandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Jones and Fred May officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Laboratory United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Marcene and Edwin Wright, 1198 Wright Road, Vale.
