Earl Baldwin
ELLENBORO — Mr. Thomas Earl Baldwin, 83, of 622 Dobbins Road, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at home.
A native of Rutherford County and a son of the late Claude D. Baldwin Sr. and Grace Nance Baldwin, he was an Army veteran of World War II and retired owner of Earls Sav Mor, B and H Bonding and Baldwin Used Auto Parts. He was a member of Race Path Baptist Church, AMVETS and Ellenboro Woodmen of the World.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, C.D. Baldwin Jr., Clyde Baldwin and Lawrence Baldwin; and one sister, Vera Mae Lee.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kirby Baldwin of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas (Tom) and Joe Baldwin of Ellenboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Robert Cave of Mooresboro; four brothers, Charles Baldwin of Forest City, Bobby Jo Baldwin of Portsmouth, Va., Glenn Baldwin of Boiling Springs and Johnny Baldwin of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Magonia Prevette of Winston-Salem, Mavis Dail of Newport News, Va., and Dorothy Huffstetler of Kings Mountain; and five grandchildren, Angela Cave, Kent Baldwin, Audra Malone, Mark Cave and Heidi Moose.
His funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Race Path Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Godfrey and Edward Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Gladys Edith Stover, 69, of 295 Roper Loop Road, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.

Benjamin McFarland
SHELBY — Master Benjamin Carter McFarland, infant son of Al and Gina Wilson McFarland of 3726 Artee Road, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Frank McFarland.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Shirley Wilson, and maternal grandfather, George E. Wilson, and his paternal grandmother, Jackie McFarland, all of Shelby; and a brother, Jacob McFarland of the home.

Grace Blanton
SHELBY — Mrs. Grace Louise Welch Blanton, 89, of 705 Westover Terrace, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Ashe County she was a daughter of the late Joe and Lucy Ashley Welch. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Dr. Clyde Hoey Blanton; three brothers, Fred, Ray and John Welch; and a sister, Ruth Hamm.
Mrs. Blanton attended Appalachian State College during the Depression, but never graduated. As money was scarce, she dropped out so her brother could remain in college. She attended business college and beautician’s college in Greensboro.
Grace operated a beauty salon in Shelby for many years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Shelby for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Lonnie Proctor Circle of the WMU. She volunteered at the Kings Mountain Baptist Center and was a former Girl Scout troop leader.
She was a member of the Shelby Arts League, the Elks Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, serving on its Girls State Committee. She was very active in United Daughters of the Confederacy, frequently presenting the programs. She was also a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and volunteered at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. Grace was an avid reader and a frequent traveler. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, antiquing and needlepoint.
She is survived by two daughters, Lyn B. Kirkland and her husband, Dr. Larry R. Kirkland, of Atlanta and Beth Blalock and her husband, Robert, of Clayton, Ga.; two granddaughters, Ashley Blalock of Asheville and Julie Blalock of Clayton; and many loving and faithful friends and neighbors.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Tony Tench and Perry Holleman officiating.
Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

BELWOOD — Mr. Fred Toney, 79, of 314 Old Belwood Road, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at home.

Alexander Jr.
NEBO — Mr. William “Bill” Theodore Alexander Jr., 74, of Highway 70 E. in Nebo, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Father’s Day, June 20, 2004. Born Sept. 20, 1929, in Atlanta, he was the son of the late William Theodore Alexander Sr. and Eloise McDowell Alexander.
Mr. Alexander was a member of Calvin Heights Baptist Church and had attended Asheville Street Baptist. He had been active in his Sunday school class. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving from 1946 to 1950, and retired as a volunteer fireman after 20 years of service with both the Morganton Post Office and R.E.M.C. He was currently working at Henredon Furniture.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Mary Ann Bostic Alexander of the home; children Rhonda O’Clair Alexander of Morganton, William Theodore “Ted” Alexander III and wife, Patti Powell Alexander, of Shelby, Capt. Docia A. Buchanan, USAF, and husband, Tracy Paul Buchanan, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Ann Bostic A. Chapman and husband, Alan Bart Chapman, of Morganton; sister Eloise A. Stieneke of Lenoir; brothers Joseph Vance Alexander and wife, Mary, of Morganton, Erwin McDowell Alexander and wife Celia of Suffolk, Va.; grandchildren, William Theodore Alexander IV, Christina Ann Alexander, Alexander Cole Chapman and Hannah Marie Chapman; and a cousin, Bob Wright and wife, Mary, and their son, Tom, of California.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Calvin Heights Baptist Church in Morganton, with the Rev. Roy E. Houston officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Lalene Grigg
SHELBY — Miss Lalene Fortune Grigg, 100, of Crawley Memorial Hospital in Boiling Springs, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born in Shelby, she was the daughter of the late Biddie Justice Grigg and Samuel Grigg. She received her education at Spartanburg Methodist College and Appalachian State Teachers College. She taught third grade at Jefferson Elementary School starting in 1931, retiring in 1969. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and Ross Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by a number of cousins.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Ross Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Edwin McGinnis officiating.
The family will receive friends at the graveside.

Rufus Clark
SHELBY — Mr. Rufus James Clark Jr., 54, of 1807 South Post Road, died Saturday, June 19, 2004.
The graveside service is today at 11 a.m. at Patterson Springs Baptist Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Toole officiating.
Visitation will follow the service.

Bob Lowman
SHELBY — Mr. Robert Lee Lowman Sr., 70, of 3908 Fallston Road, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
Born in Burke County on May 18, 1934, he was a son of Irene Lowman of Shelby and the late Ross Lowman. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bill Lowman. He was the owner of Cleveland Cabinet Sales. He was an active member of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church and served in the Army.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janie Wright Lowman, of the home; two sons, Bob Lowman Jr. of Charlotte, and Davy Lowman of Shelby; two daughters, Angi Dixon of Shelby and Sandi Lowman of Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, Russell Lowman of Bostic, Ruffus Lowman of Newberry, S.C., and Roy Lowman of Shelby; two sisters, Margaret Strickland and Cathi Johnson, both of Shelby; and four grandchildren, Rachel Lowman and Jessica Lowman of Charlotte and Melissa Blackwell and Michael Dixon of Shelby.
The funeral will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryan Glisson officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Elsie Mae Bell Hill, formerly of Shelby, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at White Oak Manor, Charlotte.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Shiloh Institutional Baptist Church, Charlotte.
