Dr. Walter Clayton
BREVARD — Dr. Walter S. Clayton, Sr., died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the age of 88.
He was the eleventh of 12 children of the late Joseph Ezra Clayton Sr., and Isabelle (Belle) Wood Clayton of Brevard, and the great-great-grandson of Lambert and Sarah Davidson Clayton, who were the second or third family to move to this county.
Walter was an outstanding athlete for most of his life. He went to Brevard schools, graduating from Brevard High School in 1932, where he played football, baseball and basketball. He earned a football/baseball scholarship to Brevard College, where he made All State in the two sports both years and earned All Junior College honors in 1935. The football team of 1934 was the first football team at Brevard College and Walter scored the first touchdown.
In 1936, he entered Wake Forest on a football/baseball scholarship, graduating in 1939. He then taught and coached at Carthage and Burlington high schools for several years before entering dental school in Atlanta. After graduating from Emory University in 1946, he was immediately granted a Georgia dental license and took over the practice of an elderly ailing dentist in Sparta, Ga., for several months while he waited to hear from the North Carolina Dental Board. Later, in 1946, after receiving his N.C. dental license, he opened a practice with Jack Hunt, a fellow dental student, in Cliffside, where he practiced dentistry for eight years.
In March 1947, he married Jack’s sister, Julia Hunt. Two weeks after their third child was born, Walter was called to service during the Korean War. In 1955, after serving two years at Fort Bragg as a dentist, he moved his family to his dearly missed hometown of Brevard. He had become acquainted with air conditioning during his stay at Fort Bragg and built the first air-conditioned building in Transylvania County.
As his children grew older, the game of golf took over as the main sport of his life. One of his patients mentioned to him that Glen Cannon Farm was for sale and would be the perfect place for a golf course. He mentioned this to his golfing buddies and the development of Glen Cannon Golf Course began, with Walter overseeing the design and course layout. He was very pleased with the results and felt it was one of the best courses he ever played, including the Augusta National, where the Masters is played. Walter won the Glen Cannon Club Championship for many years as well as much other golf tournaments across western North Carolina.
He was a member of the Transylvania Board of Health for 21 years and First United Methodist Church.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Hunt Clayton; his son, Dr. Robert Clayton; and 10 of his brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his son, Walter S. Clayton Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Florida; his daughter, Julia Anne C. Blythe and her husband, Steve, of Brevard; and his daughter-in-law, Dr. Carol Wratten of Texas. He has six grandchildren, Stephanie Blythe Chapman and her husband, Brent, and Clayton Blythe of Brevard, Will Clayton and his wife, Amy, of Hendersonville, Charlotte Clayton of Florida, Richard Clayton and his wife, Regan, of Wyoming and Robert M. Clayton of Texas.
