Bobbie Leagon
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Bobbie Jean Graham Leagon, 65, of 193 Ross Road, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
Born in Walhalla, S.C., Leagon was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a retired textile worker.
She is survived by her husband, Junior Leagon; daughters, Deborah Ann Leagon Hamrick of Blacksburg, Teresa Kay Leagon Harward of York, S.C., Tonya Yvonne Leagon Deaton of Shelby and Wendy Michelle Leagon of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Steven McKinley Leagon of Kings Creek; a sister, Onnie Long of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Charles Graham of Gaffney and Lawrence Graham of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Hopewell Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charlie Barnard officiating. Pallbearers are George Moss, Steve Moss, Danny Ham, Butch Kale, Ronnie Patterson, Mike Patterson and Eddie Upchurch.
Interment will follow at Hopewell Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church and other times at the home, 193 Ross Road, Blacksburg.

Mary McDowell
FOREST CITY — Mary Helen McDowell, 52, of 611 Doggett Grove Road died Wednesday, June 9, 2004.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Mount Pisgah United Church of God, with the Rev. Jesse Banner officiating.
Burial will follow at Island Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Cowpens, S.C.
Visitation will be at the home of Mary and Charles McDowell and will precede the funeral.
Robert Lee Jennings
SHELBY — Robert Lee “Mack” Jennings, of 411 S. Suttle St., Shelby passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the home of his aunt, Corine D. Hopper. He was the nephew of the late R. J. Hopper. He was born June 3, 1955.
Robert graduated from Shelby High School in 1973. He served in the Army from 1973 until 1975.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Alexander and Fannie R. Jennings.
Those left to cherish fond and loving memories are one daughter, Monica Jennings of Charlotte; one son, Robert L. (Lavon) McGill of Cherryville; seven sisters, Patricia Jennings of New York, Dovie Brooks of Chester, Sheila Ager and her husband, Steve, Lucille Bradshaw and Ann Jennings, all of Shelby; Carolyn Jennings of Salisbury; Helen Whitlow of Newark, N.J.; brothers, Johnny Jennings of Shelby, Lester Jennings of Grayson, Ga., Bobby Jennings of Newark, Larry Jennings of Cincinnati and Calvin Jennings of Winston-Salem; one grandson, Ratavius McGill and a host of nieces and nephews and one special friend, Billy Joe Hayes.
Robert “Mack” Jennings was caring, kind-hearted and a lot of fun. His smile would light up your day. Robert had a lot of friends and distant relatives. Mack will certainly be missed.
The funeral is today at 2:30 p.m. at Genesis Chapel in Shelby, with Dovie Brooks, Prophetess, officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns. The visitation is at 2 p.m. just before the funeral. Dockery’s funeral home is assisting the family.
Frances Walker
SHELBY — Frances G. Walker, 87, of Pleasant Ridge Community, Shelby, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Hospice of Cleveland County at Wendover. S
The service will be today at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church from 1:30 until 2 p.m. The Revs. Terry Cagle and Steve Austin will officiate. Burial will follow at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will received visitors Friday at Cleveland Funeral Services.
‘Bill’ Crawley Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. William “Bill” G. Crawley Jr., 81, of 1431 Padgett Road, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he was born March 13, 1923. He was a retired farmer and store operator. He served in the Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William G. Crawley Sr. and Julie Cosby Crawley, and a sister, Mary Julie Hollifield.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eva V. Scruggs Crawley of the home; two sons, Charles Crawley and James Crawley, both of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet Crawley and Bobby McNeely of Lattimore and Helen Crawley and Larry Alexander of Ellenboro; four grandchildren, Robert Alexander, Angel Flanagan, Shane McNeely and Tanya McNeely; and five great-grandchildren, Nicholas Alexander, August Alexander, Steve Alexander, Joey Flanagan and Rebecca Flanagan.
A graveside service is today at 11 a.m. at Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Joel Dale and Billy Hollifield officiating
Friends are welcome at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Bobby McNeely, 2531 S. White Oak Drive in Lattimore, after the service or at any time.

Arvel Brindel
MOORESBORO — Mr. Arvel Denton Brindel, 83, of 2047 Bachelor Road, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jasper, Ga., he was born March 14, 1921. He was a retired mechanic at Central Chevrolet in Columbia, S.C. and a lifetime member of the Masons, Scottish Rite and Shriners and a member of the Eastern Star. He also served in the Army with the 862nd Aviation Engineer Corp during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Arch and Mabel Long Brindel; a son, Tony Arvel Brindel; a brother, D.A. Brindel and a sister, Jewel Padgett.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Teasley Brindel; a son and daughter-in-law, James Arch and Judy Brindel of Ward, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Troyce Smart-McSwain and husband, Bobby of Mooresboro; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Brindel of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Olen Brindel of Cary, Ill. and Jake Rufus Brindel of Picayune, Miss. and a sister, Opal Springfield of Talladega, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at Stamey Funeral Home at 11 a.m., with the Revs. Charles Ivey and Paul Williams officiating.
Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Teresa Greene
RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Teresa Ann Vance Greene, 41, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Fellowship Holiness Church, with the Revs. Leon Brown, Billy Vance, Keith Vance and Chad Roach officiating.
Burial will follow in the Round Hill Baptist Church in Union Mills.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Crowe Funeral Home.
Elaine Moss
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Elaine Caroline Beilke Moss, 75, of 504 Crescent Hill, who was born in the town of Maine in Marathon County, Wis., to the late Leo Albert Fredrick and Johanna Louise Micheel Beilke, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Otto Beilke of Merrill, Wis., and a nephew, Bruce Beilke of Mount Pleasant, Ill.
Elaine was baptized on Dec. 28, 1928, at home, was confirmed on March 29, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church and married to John Henry Moss, husband of 46 years in Wausau, Wis., on Dec. 27, 1958, at Zion Lutheran Church in the town of Maine, Wis. She was the office manager for the J.E. Herndon Company for 35 years, retiring in October 1994. Elaine also served as director of administration and finance for the South Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs Inc.
Elaine had an engaging sense of humor and was most thoughtful of other people. She was an active member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church where she served on the Altar Guild, the Congregation Pastor-Staff Support as well as the History, Special Events and Publicity committees and a member of Kings Mountain Home Arts Club.
She served as First Lady of the City of Kings Mountain for almost 24 years during her husband, John Henry Moss’ tenure as mayor. She served as host for many events and official visits by dignitaries and elected officials to the City of Kings Mountain. She assisted her husband in honoring the returning of Vietnam veterans and many special groups of area citizens, and she had a very special concern relative to the elderly, often remembering them with gifts and baked goodies.
In 2004, Elaine was elected to the South Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs Hall of Fame, as well as receiving other sports awards. She will be inducted at the Hall of Fame Luncheon on the USS Yorktown in Charlestown Harbor on June 29.
She is survived by her husband, John Henry Moss of Kings Mountain; her sister, Nathalie Andrus and husband, Richard, of Wausau, Wis.; a brother, Reuben Beilke and wife, Patricia, of Mount Prospect, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Beilke of Galena, Ill; two nieces, Mary Kay Bensen and husband, Ted, of Ham Lake, Minn., and Christie Beilke of Madison, Wis.; four nephews, Dr. Mark Beilke and wife, Cornelia, of New Orleans, La., Robert Beilke and wife, Vicki, of Stella, Neb., the Rev. David Andrus and wife, Debra, of Webster Groves, Mo., and John Andrus and wife, Janean, of Wausau, Wis.; other nieces, Cindy Hughes Meek and husband, Ken, of Smyrna, S.C., Amanda Christene Blanton of Kings Mountain, Paula Blanton Cribb and husband, Neville, of Hemingway, S.C., Linda Johnson Welch and husband, Alton, of High Point, other nephews, Epsy Cooke and wife, Patricia of Kings Mountain, Gary Cooke and wife, Christie, of Kings Mountain, Wayne Cooke and wife, Sherri, of Kings Mountain, Scott Cooke and wife, Linda, of Kings Mountain, Tony Cooke and wife, Paige, of Kings Mountain, Tim Felix Johnson and wife, Donna, of Kings Mountain, Mack Earl Blanton and wife, Trysha, of Gaffney, S.C., and Joseph Ernest Blanton and wife, Arland, of Morganton.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Ken Gillikin and Harwood Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the Moss Family Plot in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home, with the Kings Mountain Police Department Honor Guard.

Elizabeth Patton
DUNCAN, S.C. — Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Nalley Patton, 71, of 122 Highland Drive, widow of David C. Patton Sr., died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at home.
A native of Easley, S.C., she was daughter of the late Luther D. and Ola Mae Smith Nalley. She was a retired employee of Startex Mills and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Mrs. Patton was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Nalley; and two sisters, Lillian Knight and Beatrice Nalley.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Emily and John Scott of Wellford, and a daughter, Miriam Patton of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, David C. (Dan) Jr. and Amanda Patton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, the Rev. George and Christine Nalley of Marion, Ind., Joseph and Eloise Nalley, Daniel and Bernice Nalley all of Easley, and a twin brother and his wife, Charles and Bobbie Nalley of Shelby; a sister, Leila Hoffman Price of Lincolnton; a granddaughter and husband, Shannon and Donny Jones of Startex; five grandchildren, Wesley and Angela Scott both of Wellford, and Andrew, Philip and Benjamin Patton of Lyman, S.C.; and a sister-in-law, Sara Nalley of Liberty.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, with the Revs. Sam Hammett and Dr. Bill Jolly officiating.
Burial will follow in Fort Prince Memorial Gardens.

Evans Clements
LOS ANGELES — Mr. Evens Lee Clements Sr., 84, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Los Angeles, Calif.
He was born June 2, 1920, in Monticello, Ga., the son of the late Eli and Mary Jackson Clements.
He joined Jones Tabernacle CME Church at an early age. He was employed as a journalist for more than 25 years at the Tri City Daily Newspaper in Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Clements was also a veteran of the Army, serving in the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eli Clements Jr.; and three sisters, Roberta Edwards, Leslie K. Clements and Sammie Lou Vinson.
He is survived by one son, Eli Clements Jr. of Seattle, Wash; one brother, John Ed Clements Jr. of Lawndale; two sisters, Alvestus Vinson of Kings Mountain and Daisey Smith of Memphis; one grandson, Noel Clements of Seattle; and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday, at 2 p.m. at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel at Enloe Mortuary. Pastor William Scott will officiate. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the funeral Saturday from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

Charles Walters
SHELBY — Mr. Charles Pinkney Walters, of 209 Belvedere Ave., died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at White Oak Manor in Charlotte.
A native of Mooresville, Mr. Walters was born Nov. 12, 1916, to the late Carl Bernie and Henrietta Chester Walters. He was a 1940 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, where he played on the undefeated and unscored-upon 1937 football team. After graduation, he taught school and coached athletics in North Carolina at Hudson and Marion high schools.
Following Pearl Harbor, Mr. Walters resigned his post at Marion High School to join the Army Air Corps where he earned the rank of captain. Mr. Walters returned to civilian life at the end of World War II. He moved to Washington, D.C., to become chief assistant to U.S. Senator Bailey, and then to U.S. Congressman Doughton.
When he left Washington, he became part owner of Town House Bakery in Rochester, N.Y. Later he returned to North Carolina to go into business for himself. In 1950, he moved to Shelby and opened Joy Crème Doughnut Co., named for his wife, Joy.
Mr. Walters spent much of his leisure time at his farm in Kings Mountain, where he raised beef cattle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Harris Walters; a son, Charles Warrick Walters; a brother, Ray Walters; and a sister, Margaret Jones.
He is survived by a brother, Ralph Walters of Shelby; a sister, Caroleen Hoyle and her husband, Roger, of Shelby; four daughters, Karen Walters Gee and her husband, Paul, of Huntersville, Becky Walters Browning and her husband, Bill, of Charlotte, Patty Walters Koury and her husband, Bob, of Raleigh, Joy Melinda Walters and her husband, Mallory Martin, of Marion; a daughter-in-law, Libby Walters of Kings Mountain; 12 grandchildren, George Vincent III and his wife, Casey, of Raleigh, Paul Gee III and Hadley Gee of Huntersville, Will Browning of Charlotte, Allison Browning of Raleigh, Charles W. Walters Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Kings Mountain, Annie Walters of Charlotte, Daniel Walters of Kings Mountain and Thomas Walters Martin of Marion; and one great-grandchild, Cheyanne Walters of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. before the service.
