William McCleary
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. William Frank McCleary, 76, of 1063 Mountain Crest Road, departed this life Friday, May 21, 2004, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
Born Oct. 18, 1927, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Willie Mae Ship McCleary and the late Clifton McCleary.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by six children, Paul McCleary (Melba), Barbara Ann Link, Rhnea Williams, Wayne McCleary and Travis McDowell, all of Kings Mountain, and Princes Reid of Shelby; one sister, Lorine Tally of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Norris McCleary of Kings Mountain and Roosevelt McCleary of Gastonia; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at Galilee Baptist Church, with Pastor Carolyn Davis officiating. Burial will be in Adams Chapel Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will meet at the home of Mr. McCleary’s granddaughter at 107 George Lewis Road, Kings Mountain.

Frances Matthews
CASAR — Mrs. Mary Frances Costner Matthews, 81, of 328 Parker Road, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at home.
Born March 27, 1923, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late David Andrew Costner and Charlcie Roxanen Downs Costner. She retired after 17 years of service in the dietary department at Broughton Hospital. She was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Minnie Parker, Essie Mae Wortman and Lessie Hastings.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Johnnie William Matthews of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Joyce Matthews of Casar; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Michael Chapman of Casar and Brenda and Chick Buchanan of Plum Tree; a brother, Joe Costner of Fallston; a sister, Hattie Self of Valdese; a very special friend, Eugene Hunt of the home; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is today at 2:30 at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Chris Sanford officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 today at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

RUTHERFORDTON — Genoa Hill Logan, 80, of 307 N. Meridian St., died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Rutherfordton, with the Rev. James A. McDougald officiating. Burial will be in Piney Ridge C.M.E. Church Cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Josie Bowman Smith, 84, of 957 Overbrook Drive, Apt. D-1, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at National Healthcare in Mauldin, S.C.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at East Gaffney Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Emma Smarr, age 78, died Wednesday May 26, 2004 at White Oak Manor. J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home is serving the family.
Doratha Turner
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Doratha P. “Dutter” Turner, 80, of White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain, formerly of Lincolnton, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004.
Mrs. Turner was born in Martinsville, Va., on Jan. 3, 1924. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gid O. Powell and Sally Candler Powell, formerly of High Shoals; her husband, retired Air Force Staff Sgt. Paul H. Turner; a sister, Thelma U’ren; and a brother, Roy Powell. Mrs. Turner was a loving former member of Boger City Baptist Church and a retired nursing assistant.
Survivors include a son, Tommy Higgs and wife, Linda, of Lincolnton; one daughter, Kathy Brooks and husband, Max, of Shelby; two sisters, Myrtle “Mutt” Minter of Martinsville and June Wehunt of Lincolnton; two brothers, George “Cricket” Powell of Lincolnton and G.O. “Buck” Powell of Martinsville; seven grandchildren, Ann Murray of Lincolnton, Kathy Bridges and Leslie Mayes of Tennessee, Tonya Proctor Thurman, Joyce Proctor Owens and Joshua Brooks, all of Shelby, and Nicole Brooks Paulson of Kings Mountain; and 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday before the service.

Julius McMurry
FOREST CITY — Mr. Julius Alonzo McMurry, 85, of Forest City, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in Rutherfordton.
The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Crowe Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Cummins and Pastor Bart Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family received friends Wednesday at Crowe Funeral Home.
Bertha Guffey
BOSTIC — Mrs. Bertha Hamrick Guffey, 84, formerly of Boiling Springs, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Fairhaven Home, where she was a resident.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late John C. Hamrick and Lillie McSwain Hamrick. She retired from Mauney Hosiery Mill in Kings Mountain in 1981, with nearly 50 years of service. After her retirement, she worked for Professional Samplers and Promotional Advertising in marketing with Wal-Mart, Bi-Lo, K-mart, Ingles and others in both North and South Carolina, until her health forced her to retire from these companies in 1986.
A member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, she enjoyed working in the nursery from about 1950 until 1996. She was married to Gail T. Guffey of Boiling Springs, where they lived until he preceded her in death in 1992. She was a wonderful, devoted caregiver to him during the eight years of his illness. For the past several years, she lived at Fairhaven Home, where she inherited many children and grandchildren and friends there.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Wall of Ellenboro; three sisters, Gertie Guffey, Ruth Wesson and Lela Blanton, all of Cleveland County; and a host of friends and loved ones at Fairhaven Home.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with Dr. Phillip W. Dunford and the Rev. Bo Wagner officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at The Padgett and King Mortuary, Forest City.

Onelus Glenn
SHELBY — Mrs. Onelus “Tap” Jackson Glenn, 77, of 1204 Gidney St., died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lee County, S.C., she was born July 9, 1926, a daughter of the late Leila Bradley and Hasting Jackson. She was a faithful member of St. Matthew Christian Fellowship Church of God, where she served on the usher board. She retired from White Oak Manor in Shelby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Glenn; two daughters, Evelynia G. Scott and Thelma G. Littlejohn; a stepson, Gregory Glenn; two sisters, Odessa Jackson and Lelia Frances Gillespie; and a brother, Willie Hasting Jackson.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda G. and Johnny Huskey and Betty and Kenneth Poston; a stepdaughter, Dianne Brown and her husband, David; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Brenda Glenn, Donald and Lillian Glenn and Robert and Trina Glenn; two sisters, Mabel Davis of Kings Mountain and the Rev. Lizzie J. Poston of Shelby; one brother and a sister-in-law, the Rev. Hoover and Helen Jackson of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. She had a very special friend, Lena Mae Glenn.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Christian Fellowship Church of God, with the Rev. Hoover Jackson officiating.
Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Annie Gordon
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Annie Mae Gordon, 87, of 305 N. Cansler St., died Monday, May 24, 2004, at home.
She was the daughter of the late John and Carrie Hickman. She joined Bynum Chapel Church at an early age and was a faithful member until her health began to fail.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy B. and Thomas Friday of Gastonia, Phyllis C. Byers of East Orange, N.J., and Joyce C. and Edgar Hewett of Kingston, Jamaica; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Bynum Chapel Church, with the Rev. Puryear officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Mary Leonhardt
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Mary Alice Reep Leonhardt, 88, of 7128 N.C. 182, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Cardinal Health Care.
A native of Lincoln County, she was born Sept. 17, 1915. She was a homemaker and member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women organization. Mrs. Leonhardt was a former Sunday school teacher, choir member and pianist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Napoleon Coy Leonhardt; her parents, Clarence Clapp Reep and Sara Ida Seagle Reep; three sons, Paul, Grady and Wayne Leonhardt; and a brother, Ward Reep.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Margie Leonhardt of Fallston, Ed and Betty Leonhardt of Fallston and Joe and Debbie Leonhardt of Cherryville; a daughter and son-in-law, Sara and David Burgess of Denver; a daughter-in-law, Sue Peeler of Fallston; three brothers, Harvey Reep of Charlotte, Miller Reep of Lincolnton and Gene Reep of Elberton, Ga.; two sisters, Inez Reep Beam of Lincolnton and Ruth Reep Moller of Baltimore; her grandchildren, Melanie Wilson and her husband, Darrell Wilson, Kristy Leonhardt, Paula Leonhardt, Wes Allen, Eddie and Susan Leonhardt, Jessica Leonhardt, Donnie Burgess and Kim Burgess; and four great-grandchildren, MacKenzie, Colby, Mallorie and Kendall.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Randi Godfrey officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in Friendly Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
