Mrs. Mada Franklin Carswell

Mrs. Mada Franklin Carswell, 92, of Morganton, died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Grace Hospital. She was born in Burke County on May 9, 1911 and was a daughter of the late Paul A. Franklin and Mattie Susan Lackey Franklin.

Mrs. Carswell was a graduate of Appalachian State University She retired in 1973 from Burke County Schools where she taught elementary students for 40 years. She enjoyed writing poetry and shared her talent with her close friends and family.

She was a member of Morganton First United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Manley L. Carswell; 2 brothers, T. Earl Franklin and Worth L. Franklin.

She is survived by her son, Robert L. Carswell and wife Carolyn, of Halls, TN; grandchildren, Lt. Col. Lisa C. Carswell of Colorado Springs, CO; Randall L. Carswell of Charlotte; Gregory E. Carswell of Charlottesville, VA and Jenny S. Stafford of Jacksonville, AL.; and 6 great grandchildren.

A Graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at Forest Hill Cemetery with Reverend Jason Harvey officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Holliway Floyd

Mrs. Patricia Ann Holliway Floyd, 58, of Old Fort, died, Saturday, February 28, 2004, at her residence. Born August 26, 1945, in Wilmington, Delaware, she was a daughter of the late Bill Holliway and Mary Cline Holliway.

Mrs. Floyd is survived by her husband, James R. Floyd, Sr., of the home; a son, Christopher Farber, of Summerville, SC; a step-son, James R. Floyd, Jr., of Summerville, SC; also surviving are three grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Floyd will be held 2:00PM, Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Black Mountain, with Pastor Peter Banyai officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence at 4995 Bat Cave Rd, Old Fort, Sunday, February 29, 2004, 4:00PM-8:00PM and 30 minutes prior to the services at the Veterans Cemetery Chapel. Mrs. Floyd will lie in state at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion until Noon, Monday.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Floyds’ memory to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan Street, Marion, NC 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Bobby Lee Cook

Mr. Bobby Lee Cook, 70, of Morganton, went to be with the Lord, Friday, January 14, 2005, at Grace Heights, Morganton. Born July 25, 1934, in Burke County, he was a son of the late William Bryant Cook and Addie Leola Lail Cook, of Morganton. In addition to his father, Mr. Cook was also preceded in death by a brother, C.D. Cook. Mr. Cook was a member of the Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Cook is also survived by a brother, Clyde Cook, of Morganton;

And two sisters, Joyce Pruett and Betty Roper, both of Morganton.

Funeral Services for Mr. Cook will be held 2:00PM, Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church with the Reverends Richard Ellington and Tim McFatter officiating. Interment will follow at the Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the Church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Mr. Cook’s memory in care of Mrs. Addie L. Cook, 6061 Bollinger Loop, Morganton, NC 28655.

Maxine D. Silver

Maxine D. Silver, age 74, of Old Fort, died June 29, 2003 at Baptist Retirement Home in Asheville, NC.

Born in McDowell County to the late Geter Davis and Dullie Silver Davis. She was a member of Old Fort First Baptist Church, and was a retired Secretary with Henredon.

She is preceded in death by her husband, David Silver, and one brother, Wesley Davis.

She is survived by one son, Tony Silver and his wife Ellen, of Old Fort; one daughter, Diane McEntire of Arden, NC; one brother, James Davis, of Old Fort; four grandchildren, Jason and Erin McEntire, Tonia Harris, and Monica Tessner; and two great grandsons, Tyler McKinney and Cameron McEntire.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm at Old Fort Baptist Church. Services will be held on Wednesday July 2, at Old Fort First Baptist Church at 2 PM with the Rev. Dwayne Caldwell and Rev. Edgar Ferrell presiding. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to WNC Baptist Retirement Homes or First Baptist Church of Old Fort- PO Box 10- Old Fort, NC 28762.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Timothy “Tim” Moser Coffey

Mr. Timothy “Tim” Moser Coffey, 46, of Wilson Street Morganton, died Monday, November 17, 2003 at the Shytle House. Born April 10, 1957 in Catawba County he was the son of the late John H. Coffey and Irene Story Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was an active member of El Bethel Baptist Church in Morganton where he had served as an usher. He had worked for Barnhardt Manufacturing Company in Hickory. A life long lover of sports, Tim was an avid golfer, played American Legion baseball, refereed basketball for a number of years at Hickory Foundation Center and the Morganton Recreation Center. He had played semipro baseball.

Tim loved life and people, he is survived by: his wife Donna Cline Coffey of the home, his beloved pet “Bogart”, brothers Johnny Coffey and wife Sarah of Hildebran, Jerry Coffey and wife Sue of Lugoff S.C. ; sisters Jane Ingle of Hickory, Penny Lineberger and husband Tim of Hickory; mother-in-law and father –in-law Christine and Doyle Baker of Lenoir, brother-in- laws Sammy Hicks, Robert Hicks both of Morganton, Julian Baker, Tony Baker, Steve Baker, James Baker all of Lenoir and a number of nieces, nephews and godchildren .

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at the El Bethel Baptist Church in Morganton with the Reverend Ron Cooper officiating. Entombment will follow at the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends 6:30 till 8:30 Tuesday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Memorials in Mr. Coffey’s memory may be made to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 1029, Valdese NC 28690 or to El Bethel Baptist Church, 1731 North Green Street, Morganton NC 28655.

Rachel Ann Norman Hughes

Rachel Ann Norman Hughes, 67, of Marion, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 17, 2005, at Memorial Mission Hospital. Born July 26, 1937, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel James Norman and is survived by her mother, Nellie Lindsay Norman, of Marion.

Ms. Hughes is also survived by a son, Johnny W. Hughes and his wife Joni, of Marion; two daughters, Tammy Hughes Ellison, of Asheville; Cindy Hughes, of Nebo; and three grandchildren, Whitney Hughes, Casey Hughes, and Haley Ellison.

Funeral Services for Ms. Hughes will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Clinchfield Baptist Church, with the Reverend Terry Roach officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Services at the church.

Mrs. Martha Gail Bailey Keys

Mrs. Martha Gail Bailey Keys, 50, of Oak Street in Hickory died Monday, June30, 2003 at Catawba Medical Center. Born May 17, 1953 in McDowell County she was the daughter of the late William Broadus Bailey and Charlene Gaddy Bailey.

Mrs. Keys was an active member of the Amazing Grace Tabernacle Church in Icard where she was involved in the church choir and sang solos. She was employed at the Kingston Residential Center and was a volunteer for the Burke County Food Bank.

She is survived by: her husband Kenneth Howard Keys of the home ; sons Brian Russell McFalls of Vale, Cody Allan McFalls and Clifton Aaron McFalls both of the home; daughter Felecia Elaine McFalls of Icard; step-daughters Melissa A. Keys of Florida, Susanna M. Keys of Germany, Rebecca N. Keys of Wisconsin, Shanna L. Keys of Hickory; brothers Carl Bailey of Montgomery Alabama, John Bailey of Columbia S.C., Richard Bailey of Marion; grandchildren Trenton Lester Kiser, Elaina Gail McFalls and two step grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Tom Church officiating . Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6:30 till 8 PM Tuesday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Memorials in Mrs. Keys memory may be made to the Amazing Grace Tabernacle Church, 3225 Icard School Road, Connelly Springs NC 28612.

Irene Gibbs Taylor

Irene Gibbs Taylor, age 87, of Florence S.C. died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 in McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born in Yancey County to the late J.R. Gibbs and Hettie Silvers Gibbs, she was a retired employee of Cross Cotton Mills and a member of Catawba Heights Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Wilfred Taylor.

Surviving are two sons, Calvin Jack Thomas of Florence, S.C. and James Thomas of Bozeman, Mt.; five grandchildren, June Thomas of Easton, Pa., Joanne Thomas of Florence, S.C., Philip Thomas of Maui, Hi, Laura Thomas of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Jason Thomas of Asheville, N.C.

Services will be held 2:00 o’clock Saturday, November 22, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Marty Conner will officiate with burial following in McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Betty Sparks Stevenson

Mrs. Betty Sparks Stevenson, 58, of Marion, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005, at The McDowell Hospital. Born in Mitchell County April 13, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Cecil Brown Sparks and Georgie Ledford Sparks. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stevenson was also preceded in death by three brothers.

Mrs. Stevenson leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband, Albert Earl Stevenson, Jr., of the home; Four sons, Tommy Stevenson and wife, Dana, Ronnie Stevenson and wife, Krystal, Chad Stevenson and wife Miranda, and Todd Stevenson, all of Marion; A brother, Bill Sparks, of Orlando, FL; Two sisters, Judy Smith, of Bakersville, NC and Elizabeth Sparks, of NJ; Also surviving are eight grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Stevenson will be held 11:00AM, Wednesday, January 19, 2005, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverend Arelin Freshour officiating. Interment will be at the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Funeral Services at the Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in care of Mr. Albert Stevenson, Jr., 503 Asheworth Circle, Marion, NC 28752.
