Jacob Tipton
MOORESBORO — Jacob Daniel Tipton, 3 months old, the son of Brian Tipton and Shelina Queen Humphries of 1535 Race Path Road, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville.
A graveside service is today at 2:30 p.m. at Broad River Baptist Church, with Crystal Watts officiating.
The family will receive friends at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home from 1 to 2 p.m.
Maxine Page
SHELBY — Mrs. Maxine L. Wright Page, 66, of 1218 Scenic Drive, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral is today at 10 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Neal Effird and Stan Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family received friends Friday.

Bertha Guffey
BOSTIC — Mrs. Bertha Hamrick Guffey, 84, formerly of Boiling Springs, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Fairhaven Home, where she was a resident.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late John C. Hamrick and Lillie McSwain Hamrick. She retired from Mauney Hosiery Mill in Kings Mountain in 1981, with nearly 50 years of service. After her retirement, she worked for Professional Samplers and Promotional Advertising in marketing with Wal-Mart, Bi-Lo, K-mart, Ingles and others in both North and South Carolina, until her health forced her to retire from these companies in 1996.
A member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, she enjoyed working in the nursery from about 1950 until 1996. She was married to Gail T. Guffey of Boiling Springs, where they lived until he preceded her in death in 1992. She was a wonderful, devoted caregiver to him during the eight years of his illness. For the past several years, she lived at Fairhaven Home, where she inherited many children and grandchildren and friends there.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Wall of Ellenboro; three sisters, Gertie Guffey, Ruth Wesson and Lela Blanton, all of Cleveland County; and a host of friends and loved ones at Fairhaven Home.
A graveside service is today at 3 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with Dr. Phillip W. Dunford and the Rev. Bo Wagner officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at The Padgett and King Mortuary, Forest City.

UNION MILLS — Mrs. Eileen Francis Conti, 69 of 864 Centennial Road, died Wednesday May 26, 2004, at home.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Church, celebrated by Father Herbert Burke and Deacon Andy Cilone.
Interment will follow in the Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Mills.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at The Padgett and King Mortuary, with the Rosary to be said at 8 p.m.

Imogene Buff
CAROLEEN — Mrs. Imogene Blackwell Buff, 81, of Moore Road, Caroleen, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Rutherford Hospital after a long illness.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church in Ellenboro, with the Revs. Owen Duncan and Kenneth Cash. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Interment will follow at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.
Alfred Williams
GROVER — Mr. Alfred Olander Williams, 75, of 2322 Blacks-burg Road, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at home.
Born in Gaffney, S.C., he was a son of the late W.H. “Bill” and Bessie Lavender Williams. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from Waldensian Bakeries as a route salesman and store manager. He was a member and former deacon of New Hope Baptist Church and a charter member of Township Three Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Iva Jean Williamson; a brother, Ernest Dean Williams; a sister, Betty Ruppe; and a niece, Sonja Kay Ruppe.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Gladys Cook Williams of the home; three sons, John Dale Williams of Earl, Dale Beaver and his wife, Susan, of Polkville, and Johnny Beaver of Lawndale; two daughters, Barbara Carroll and her husband, Wallace, of Grover and Judy Floyd and her husband, Bobby, of Polkville; a brother and his wife, Billy Lee and Dolly Williams of Shelby; a brother-in-law, Wayne Ruppe; a sister-in-law, Lucille Williams, both of Gaffney; five grandchildren, Dara Floyd, Miranda Queen, Jason Starnes, Erin Champion and Adam Beaver; and three great-grandchildren, Haley Queen and Jackson and Sydney Champion.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Gordon, Broadus Heatherly and Russ Bradley officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church life center one hour before the service.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Emma Smarr, age 78, died Wednesday May 26, 2004, at White Oak Manor.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Charles Robert Davidson, 59, of Forest City, died Thursday, May 27, 2004.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Crowe’s Mortuary in Rutherfordton.
Sally Ellis
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Sally Edna Mull Ellis, 81, of 133 Ben Carpenter Road, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at home.
Born in Cleveland County July 1, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Jacob David and Laura Alice Costner Mull. She retired from Beam’s Nursing Home, Cherryville, as a nurse’s aide. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and a former Sunday school teacher at Mount Zion Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Will, James, Pete and Plummer Mull; and a sister, Minnie Ellen Mull.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William Theodore “W.T.” Ellis of the home; two sons and their wives, David and Barbara Ellis and Harold and Barbara Ellis, all of Cherryville; three daughters and their husbands, Peggy and David Taylor and Joyce and Frank White, all of Cherryville and Shirley and George Walls of Waco; a sister, Carrie Gladden of Morganton; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

SHELBY — Mrs. Maxine L. Wright Page, 56, of 1218 Scenic Drive, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Everette and Eulalia Hoyle Wright. She retired from Wal-Mart and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Norman and Rachel Parker; and a brother, Austin Wright.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jerry Page, of the home; one son and his wife, Douglass and Debbie Page of Shelby; one sister, Thelma Hamrick of Shelby; a brother-in-law, Billy “Jake” Parker of Shelby; two grandchildren, Makayla and Orion Page; two nieces, Beth Hamrick and Sherrie Geer of Shelby; and three nephews, Gary and Eddie Wright of Shelby and Terry Hamrick of Boone.
The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Neal Effird and Stan Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.

Riva Hebert
BOILING SPRINGS — Riva I. Hebert, 93, of 210 Hillcrest St., died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born March 9, 1911, in Hartford, Conn., she was a daughter of the late James Spiriti and Josephine Denellie Spiriti.
Mrs. Hebert retired from Belcher Town State School as a housemother. She was of the Catholic faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Henry Hebert.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Samuel Boyd Putnam of Boiling Springs; a sister, Helen Camerata of Florida; grandchildren, Cindy Evans and her husband, Phil, of Greenville, Lori Lancaster and her husband, Tim, of Shelby and Steven Putnam and his wife, Donna, of Charlotte; and great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Evans, Taylor Lancaster, Ryan Lancaster and Charlotte Putnam.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with Father Eric Houseknecht officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
Willie Douglas
SHELBY — Mr. Willie James “Mr. D” Douglas, 69, of 1816 Riveria Drive, departed this life Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born May 15, 1935, in York, S.C., he was a son of Ms. Annie Bell Choates Douglas of Shelby and the late James J.D. Douglas. He worked for the RC Cola plant and Fiber Industries and retired from Doran Textiles after many years of service. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where he served as a junior deacon and as vice president of the musical choir, and was a member of the Brotherhood and the Usher Board.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Wilson Douglas; and one brother, Nathaniel “Nate” Douglas.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Gloria Douglas McCluney of Shelby and Tina (Whan) Cockerham of the home; one grandson, Wesley Brown of Shelby; three brothers, Thomas Douglas and Clinzo Douglas of Shelby and B.J. Douglas of Lowell, Mass.; one sister, Marjoree Stapleton and her friend, Mr. Dennis, of Shelby; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, with Pastor Lawrance Roseboro officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.
