Robert Dawkins
SHELBY — Mr. Robert E. Dawkins, 60, of E. Graham Street, Shelby, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at home.
He was the son of the late Mack and Rachael Dawkins Shell and a native of Cleveland County.
Mr. Dawkins was a member of Hopper’s Chapel Baptist Church and was employed by Wackenhut Security.
He was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Eufrocina Alegado Dawkins; two sons, Curtis Dawkins (Keisha) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Charles Hunt of Raleigh; one daughter, Christina Dawkins Parsons (Driko) of Twenty-nine Palms, Calif.; five brothers; seven sisters and six grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday, June 2 at 1 p.m. at Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Coleman officiating.
Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends a half an hour before the service at the church.

Mary Hayes
SHELBY — Mrs. Mary May Hayes, 98, of 803 Orchard St., died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., she was born May 16, 1906. She retired from Lily Mill Co. as a spinner and attended Manna Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Taylor and Martha Pack; husband, Tom Hayes; four brothers; four sisters and five great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Patsy Hayes of Shelby; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Louise and Clifford Panther of Grover, Ellen Emory and Ruby Emory and Alice and Allie Martin, all of Shelby; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church with Dr. J. Barry Goodman, and the Revs. Tom Whitlock and Robert “Bob” Elwood officiating.
Burial will follow in the Zoar Baptist Church Cemtery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church and other times at the home.

Florence Elliott
SHELBY — Mrs. Florence J. Elliott, 84, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
She was retired from Patterson Cleaners where she was a presser. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Johnson and Rachel Hollifield Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, John S. Elliott, two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Darla Roadcap of Shelby and John Wesley and Susan Elliott of Raleigh; a brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Beverly Johnson of Shelby; three grandchildren, Sherri Wray and husband, Eric, Robert Roadcap and John (Butch) Elliott; a niece, Susan Johnson and nephew, Michael Johnson.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Palmer Mortuary.

Darrell Wilson
LINCOLNTON — Mr. William Darrell Wilson, Sr., 60, of 726 Landers Chapel Road, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at his residence.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Bost officiating.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the chapel.
Burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Eaker Cemetery in Crouse.

Bill Upchurch
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. William Oliver Upchurch, 79, of 202 Roy Eaker Road, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center.
He was born November 24, 1924, in Gaston County, a son of the late W.O. and Vetta Huss Upchurch Sr.
Mr. Upchurch was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was an elder, former member of the Rotary Club, a Shriner, Masonic Lodge 505 AF & AM, American Legion Post No. 100, member of various community organizations, a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II, former mayor of Cherryville for 12 years, and owner of Upchurch Garden Center and Mobile Home Estates.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Mae Wells Upchurch, a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Margaret and David Ferguson of Cherryville; a son and daughter-in-law, William Marcus and Angela Upchurch of Cherryville; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Alex, Susan and John Ferguson, Will, Luke and Dan Upchurch, all of Cherryville.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Lowe officiating.
Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Sylvia Morrow
ALEXANDER MILLS — Mrs. Sylvia Holland Morrow, 62, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Henderson Care Center.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Rev. J.J. Powell officiating.
Burial will follow in Alexander Mills Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Lynn Moore at 175 Smokey Land in Ellenboro.
Alfred Williams
GROVER — Mr. Alfred Olando Williams, 75, of 2322 Blacksburg Road, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at home.
Born in Gaffney, S.C., he was a son of the late W.H. “Bill” and Bessie Lavender Williams. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from Waldensian Bakeries as a route salesman and store manager. He was a member and former deacon of New Hope Baptist Church and a charter member of Township Three Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Iva Jean Williamson Williams; a brother, Ernest Dean Williams; a sister, Betty Ruppe; and a niece, Sonja Kay Ruppe.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Gladys Cook Beaver Williams of the home; three sons, John Dale Williams of Earl, Dale Beaver and his wife, Susan, of Polkville, and Johnny Beaver of Lawndale; two daughters, Barbara Carroll and her husband, Wallace, of Grover and Judy Floyd and her husband, Bobby, of Polkville; a brother and his wife, Billy Lee and Dolly Williams of Shelby; a brother-in-law, Wayne Ruppe; a sister-in-law, Lucille Williams, both of Gaffney; five grandchildren, Dara Floyd, Miranda Queen, Jason Starnes, Erin Champion and Adam Beaver; three great-grandchildren, Haley Queen and Jackson and Sydney Champion; and a special niece, Lisa Brumley of Gaffney, S.C.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Gordon, Broadus Heatherly and Russ Bradley officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church life center one hour before the service.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Sylvia Holland Morrow of Alexander Mills died Friday May 28, 2004, at Henderson Care Center.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Lynn Moore, 175 Smokey Lane, Ellenboro.

Marie Weaver
RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Marie Georgia Eades Weaver, 94, died May 28, 2004.
The funeral is today at 5 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Caldwell officiating.
Interment will follow at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 to 5 p.m.
Frank Boddie
CAMDEN, S.C. — Mr. Frank Sherrod Boddie, 76, of Camden, S.C., died Thursday May 27, 2004, in Camden.
Born in Winston-Salem on Feb. 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Frank S. Boddie of Scotland Neck and Belle Cannady Boddie of Granville County. Frank enlisted in the United States Naval Service on Feb. 1, 1944. After serving in the Navy, he entered East Carolina University in Greenville and was awarded a business degree in accounting. He worked as a certified public accountant until retirement in 2003.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jane Cornwell, who was daughter of the late Tom Cornwell and Lula Spangler Cornwell of Shelby.
He is survived by two sons, Mark Sherrod Boddie of Rembert, S.C., and Thomas Needham Boddie of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and one grandson, Preston Sherrod Boddie of Columbia, S.C.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Randy Bridges presiding.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services.

KINGS MOUNTAN — Mrs. Emma Smarr, 78, of 103 Place Point, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ernest Simon, pastor, and the Rev. Lillie Mae Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.
