Born in Shelby, he was the son of the late J.G. and Maybelle Hartness Dudley. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1954, from Wake Forest University with a business administration degree in 1958, and from North Carolina State University in 1977 with both a master’s degree and doctorate in adult education.

Dr. Dudley’s work life was varied and, according to him, very interesting. He was a store manager for F.W. Woolworth Co., Director of Continuing Education at Cleveland County Technical College, State Director of Adult Education for the N.C. Department of Community Colleges and Director of Staff Development at the O’Berry Center and John Umstead Hospital. He served as Coordinator of the Adult Education section of the Southern Regional Education Board. Dr. Dudley was also instrumental in developing an Adult Basic Education special project that led to annual funding of $10,000,000 for the Adult Basic Education program in the N.C. Community College System.

Dr. Dudley wrote several songs that were made into a CD, “Our Best to You.” He had several poems published by the Blue Mountain Press. Additionally, Dr. Dudley became a rather talented landscape painter in his later life.

He loved golf and pool shooting as well as almost all sporting events and games. And, finally, he was an avid Internet poker player, winning several poker tournament events.

Surviving are his wife, Emily Robertson Dudley of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sonja and Greg Bissette of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., and Donna and Jimmy Rose of Selma; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Martha Satterwhite of Killeen, Texas, and Bryan and Michelle Satterwhite of Emerald Isle.

From a family of five children, only two sisters remain, Jane Lackey and her husband, Boston, of Petersburg, Va., and Angela Teer of Raleigh. He has six wonderful grandchildren, Joshua Bissette and Jesse Bissette of Smith Mountain Lake, Amanda Rose and Holly Rose of Selma and Colin and Marley Satterwhite of Emerald Isle.

Dr. Dudley loved his wife, children and grandchildren more than anything. And he wants all of his family and friends to enjoy and celebrate their lives each and everyday, just as he did.

He loved to say, “Spend each day as if it were going to be your last one on Earth and sure enough, one day you’ll be right. Enjoy each one of them.”

Please visit his wife and family at their home.

There will be a short memorial service at his home Thursday at 4 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Boston Lackey.

Memorial contributions may be made to Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.

Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
