Ernest Graham
FOREST CITY — Mr. Ernest Eugene Graham, 71, of 1479 Doggett Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at his home.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Elkins officiating.
Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Harlen Peeler
SHELBY — Mr. Harlen “Fuzzy” Elbert Peeler, 82, of 2914 Lake Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 19, 1921, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Carl Peeler and Elizabeth Thacker-son Peeler. He retired from the staple department of Celanese and was a member of Hoey Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Peeler served seven years in the Army. He was stationed in Panama and served in the European Theater during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Peeler.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Champion Peeler; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Pat Peeler of Shelby; a grandson, Paul Peeler of Charlotte; a granddaughter and her husband, Kati and Randy Nelson of Fort Mill, S.C.; and a brother, Hal Peeler of Homestead, Fla.
The funeral will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Tom Freeman and the Rev. Billy Towery officiating.
Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Lorene Oswald
SHELBY — Mrs. Lorene Shealy Oswald, 93, of 1425 E. Marion St., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at Sterling House of Shelby.
Born in Lexington, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Leila Price Shealy. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, class of 1931 and was a public school teacher. She taught at Charter Oak School, Pond Beach School and Lexington Schools in South Carolina, and Hendersonville and Raleigh Public Schools in North Carolina. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington, S.C.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William Ray Oswald; a sister, Annie Martha O’Daniel; two brothers-in-law, Archie T. O’Daniel and J. Harry Wyse; and a son-in-law, Hershel F. Cooke.
She is survived by one daughter, Renay Cooke of Lawndale; two sisters, Suedelle Wyse of Columbia, S.C., and Melba Shealy of Lexington; two grandchildren, Jason Todd Cooke and wife, Gunti Singh, of New York, N.Y., and Emily Utley and husband, Chris, of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Renay Utley and Ryan Lewis Utley, both of Fort Myers.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Lexington, with the Rev. Mark Bredholt officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Barr-Price Funeral Home in Lexington.

Fred Kitchens
SHELBY — Fred Henry Kitchens, 84, of 202 W. Zion Church Road, died Wednes-day, Sept. 3, 2003, at Cleveland County Regional Medical Center.
Born July 9, 1919 in Columbus, Ga., he was the founder of Progressive Methods Inc. and Buckhead Office Machines in Georgia. He was a Chief Petty Officer and Special Assistant Officer of Admiral Rosendhal in the Navy during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Nolan Kitchens and Era Phillips Kitchens; his wife, Geraldine Bailey Kitchens; and sister, Nell Kitchens.
Survivors are a brother, Patrick Kitchens of Shelby; brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Jenny Kitchens of Gainesville, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Jim Harris of Norcross, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Dr. Don Miller of Shelby; two sisters, Juanita Jordan and Geraldine Fornby of Columbus; five grandchildren, Susan Benefield, Sharon Sanders, Fred and Jill Kitchens, and Gabrielle Miller; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Benefield and Luke Sanders; and his beloved dog, Mandy.
The memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jeff Patterson and the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Dorothy Nixon
LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Dorothy Lee Nixon, 73, of 1109 E. Catawba St., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare Renaissance.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lovely Holy Temple Church, with Pastor Barbara Russell officiating.
Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Archie Hamrick
SHELBY — Mr. Archie Griffin Hamrick, 79, of 1500 S. Morgan St., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at home.
Born Oct. 31, 1923, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late David Rufus Hamrick and Elisa Ellen Carswell Hamrick. He retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lincolnton and a Master Mason of Cleveland Lodge No. 202.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Chad Hamrick; four brothers, Jim Hamrick, Harold Hamrick, J.T. Hamrick and Ben Hamrick; and three sisters, Vassie Hoppes, Elizabeth Morehead and Ruth Barnette.
He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Joey and Tami Hamrick and Gary Hamrick, all of Shelby, Roger and Katie Hamrick of Hibbing, Minn., and David and Alison Lail of Charlotte; two brothers, Dewey Hamrick of Cherryville and Johnny Hamrick of Shelby; three sisters, Martha Green of Boiling Springs and Eva Champion and Catherine Oliver, both of Shelby; special friends and caregivers, Joyce Hamrick of Shelby, Edith Wykle of Gastonia and Amy Powers of Blacksburg, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor J.G. Graves and the Rev. Bobby Elmore Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.

Alice McCraw
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Alice Jones McCraw, 95, of White Oak Estates, 400 Webber Road, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Spartan-burg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Mitchell County, she had lived in Shelby for 80 years before moving to Spartanburg in July 2002. She was the daughter of the late Fate Jones and Amanda Jones Hensley and was the widow of Jacob C. McCraw.
Mrs. McCraw was a member of Dover Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school in the children’s department for many years and was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She was a charter member of the Dover-Ora Women’s Club. She retired from the Dover Textile Group. Upon retirement, she served as a hospital volunteer at Cleveland Memorial Hospital for 28 years.
A daughter, Nina McCraw Holt, preceded Mrs. McCraw in death. Survivors include a son, Larry Gene McCraw of Shelby; a daughter, Janice McCraw Poole of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, Shelby.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Dover Baptist Church, 1501 Polkville Road, Shelby, conducted by the Revs. B. Ervin Price and John Garner.
Burial will be in Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery, Henrietta, N.C.
The family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to the Dover Baptist Church Building Fund.
S. Howard Ware
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. S. Howard Ware, 86, of 203 Maner Road, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
He was born in Cleveland County and was a son of the late Charles Page Ware and Lucretia Carroll Ware. He was husband of the late Martha Herndon Ware. He was also preceded in death by a son, William “Bill” T. Ware and his wife, JoAnn; brothers, Dewitt Ware, Carl Ware and James Ware; and sisters, Nellie Thornburg, Mary Spearman and Lucille Randall. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain and retired from Southern Railroad. He was also a member of the Railroad Brotherhood.
He is survived by three sons, Michael H. Ware and wife, Barbara, of Pomaria, S.C., Tony D. Ware and wife, Kathy, of Highland, Mich., and Pete D. Ware and Judy of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Cornelia Kimmell and husband, Jim, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Kathryn Kincaid and husband, Ronnie, of Mount Gilead and Martha Lou Wells and husband, Toney, of Kings Mountain; a brother, Robert P. Ware of Kings Mountain; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Sloan officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

SHELBY — Mrs. Creola McKinney Mitchell, 87, of 401 N. Morgan St., died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
The family will meet at the home of her son, Henry Mitchell, 2068 Green Oak Drive, Shelby.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel.
Mildred Watts
CAROLEEN — Mrs. Mildred Ellis Watts, 51, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at home.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harmon Street Baptist Church, with Dr. Eddie Rape and the Rev. Tom Frady officiating.
Burial will be later in Sunset Memorial Park.
