Melbern McDaniel
ELLENBORO — Mr. Melbern McDaniel, 87, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at his home.
A memorial service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Walls Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Creola Mitchell
SHELBY — Ms. Creola McKinney Mitchell, 87, of 401 N. Morgan St., was born June 30, 1916, to the late King Odell McKinney and Edna Davis McKinney in Cleveland County and departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
Creola was the second oldest child of twelve children and was formerly a resident of Boiling Springs. She was a very faithful member of Green Bethel Baptist Church until her health failed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Mitchell, to whom she was married for 58 years.
She is survived by two sons, John Henry Mitchell (Josephine) of Shelby and David Mitchell (Tina) of Forest City; three daughters, Edna Mitchell of Providence, R.I., Carrie Smith of Grover and Elizabeth Lowe of Newton; a granddaughter she reared, Troy Poole (Jimmy) of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Elizabeth Ware of Charlotte; four brothers, John Lewis of Shelby, Odell and Walter McKinney of Miami, and Daniel McKinney of Kings Mountain; a very dear niece, Katherine Ross of Cherryville; 39 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Green Bethel Church with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service and will be meeting at the home of her son, John Henry Mitchell, 2068 Green Oak Drive Hickory Hill, Shelby.
Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Harlen Peeler
SHELBY — Mr. Harlen “Fuzzy” Elbert Peeler, 82, of 2914 Lake Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Freeman and the Rev. Billy Towery officiating.
Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.
Weldon Bratton
MOORESBORO — Mr. Robert Weldon Bratton, 91, of 901 Old 221-A, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at Willow Ridge.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at State Line Baptist Church with the Revs. Charlie Blackwell, Darrell Revels, John Godfrey and Dan Bostic officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.
Helen Johnson
SHELBY — Mrs. Helen Queen Johnson, 85, of 2315 Taylor Road, died Wednes-day, Sept. 3, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 29, 1917, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Homer Wilson and Lola Ferris Wilson. She was previously employed at Lily Mill, Wilson Realty and Kmart. She was former president of the Women’s Auxiliary for the Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Garland Queen and Jess Johnson; and a son, Gary Queen.
She is survived by two sons, Steve Queen and Stan Queen, both of Shelby; a sister, Dot O’Shields of Shelby; and grandchildren, Carmen Griffin, Emily Queen, Adam Queen, Jason Queen and Josh Queen.
A graveside service will be held today at 2:30 p.m. in Sunset Cemetery, with the Rev. J. Billy Towery officiating.
The family will receive friends at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home one hour before the service.

‘Jim’ Newton
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. James Roberson “Jim” Newton, 80, of 1268 Shelby Highway, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia.
He was born May 17, 1923, in Cleveland County, a son of the late Robert Andrew and Jane Lackey Newton. He served in the Army during World War II, retired from Cochrane Furniture Manufacturing Co. after 15 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church, Cherryville.
Eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death, Howard, R.A., Lemuel, Vernon and Gideon Newton, Maude Newton, Lottie Self and Ailene Smith.
He is survived by a brother, Cline Newton of Charlotte; a sister, Helen Jones of Rutherfordton; a sister-in-law, Mary Newton of Cherryville; a brother-in-law, Morris Smith of Crouse; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. in Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner officiating.
The family will receive friends at Carpenter’s Funeral Home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before the service and at other times at the home.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Ola Mae Duncan Buckner, 81, of 2027 Chase High Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Shane Kirby and Ray Hooper officiating.
Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

IRMO, S.C. — Mr. Ben J. Toms, 64, of 107 Mill Way Court, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003.
The funeral will be Friday at Jones AME Zion Church, 2400 Barnhamzille Road, Columbia, S.C.

Kenny Parris
SHELBY — Mr. Kenny Wayne Parris, 21, of 3309 Polkville Road, Lot 7, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Keith Parris and Vickie McCullough Parris Smith, both of Shelby. He was employed by Dollar General Store and was a graduate of Burns High School, where he was assistant manager for the football team from 1999 to 2001.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Shirley and Paul Carroll and Shirley and Sam Drewery, all of Shelby; two sisters, Amanda Moore of Boiling Springs and Victoria Smith of Shelby; and two brothers, Derrick Moore of Boiling Springs and Walter Smith of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, with the Rev. John Bridges and Pastor Bobby Callahan officiating.
Burial will be in Community Baptist Church Cemetery.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Hughlen M. “Bear” Miller, 80, of 204 Walker St., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at his home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Don Williams officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

‘Pete’ Morehead Sr.
SHELBY — Mr. Frank G. “Pete” Morehead Sr., 72, of 5400 Canter-bury Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born Jan. 26, 1931, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Fritz F. Morehead Sr. and Maggie Gold Morehead. He retired from Duke Power and was a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church. He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher and sang with the Southern Gospel Quartet for 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Morehead.
He is survived by his wife, Frances T. Morehead of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Ronnie Ruppe of Shelby; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Butch and Jill Morehead and Mickey and Betty Morehead, all of Shelby, and the Rev. Buddy and Meredith Morehead of Mooresboro; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mae Kelly, Lena Josey and Brenda and Roger Josey, all of Maiden and Phyllis and Gene Carroll of Bessemer City; four brothers and four sisters-in-law, the Rev. R.B. and Frances Morehead of Neeses, S.C., Fritz and Barbara Morehead of Swainsville, Phil and Martie Morehead of Kings Mountain and Tom and Deane Morehead of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Lily Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Elmore Jr. officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
