Hazel Gill grew up working on his family’s farm in Kings Creek, S.C. His parents were strict and impressed upon their 13 children the value of hard work, religion and education.
He started working in a hardware store, there using his skills and money he made from driving a truck at the hardware store to buy a couple of dump trucks. He was employed at Kerns Trucking for awhile and then started Hazel Lee Gill Trucking in 1948.
Six years later, he bought a 1936 Packard and started an ambulance and funeral service with his brother-in-law, Raleigh Brown. It was called Gill and Brown Funeral Home until 1969, when J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home was founded, naming the funeral home in honor of his father. He spent 32 wonderful years in the funeral business helping grieving families and other funeral homes.
When he wasn’t busy at the funeral home, he often did his favorite hobby of gardening, tending six acres. He had such a green thumb, most of the food was given away. He would often let the community pick from the gardens he raised or just show up at your door with vegetables. He would bring ice, food and fruit to churches that were having activities.
He reached out in the community by running for City Council twice and was the first African American in Cleveland County to broadcast from a radio station, WKMT in Kings Mountain. He was also a member of Moses Masonic Lodge No. 4.
