Nolan Morrison
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Mr. Nolan Morrison, 67, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2003.
A native of Cleveland County, he had been a Peninsula resident for more than 40 years. He retired in 1996 as a security officer with Newport News Shipyard after 37 years of service. He was a member of Ivy Farms Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Claudine Morrison; two sons, Mark Morrison and his wife, Karen and Randy Morrison and his wife, Christy; five grandchildren, Laura, David, Daniel, Jacob and Joshua, all of Isle of Wight; six brothers, Melvin, Billy Ray, Willie Fay, David, Joe and Jon Morrison; and five sisters, Alda May Crump, Elizabeth Luckadoo, Mozelle West, Katherine Luckadoo and Gail Swafford, all of North Carolina.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Marshall Mason. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Ivy Farms Baptist Church.
Homer Justis
SHELBY — Mr. Homer Rodeheaver Justis, M.D., beloved physician, father, husband and grandfather, died peacefully at his residence in Shelby on Sept. 5, 2003.
Dr. Justis was born on Dec. 31, 1922, in Lynchburg, Va., the son of William C. and Mimie Justis. Surviving are his siblings Roberta Justis Staton and Emory Justis, both of Lynchburg, Va.
Dr. Justis was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis Morrow “Abigail” Justis and six siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Bea Porter Justis; and five children, Abigail Justis Boggs and husband, David, of Charlotte, Michael Justis and wife, Cindy, of Alpharetta, Ga., Christopher Justis of Edenton, Priscilla Justis Nanney and husband, David, of Raleigh, and Peter Justis and wife, Kathryn, of Charlotte. Dr. Justis is survived by loving grandchildren, Hunter Boggs, Morrow Boggs, William Justis, Caleb Justis, Lara Justis, Grant Justis, David Nanney, Lee Nanney, Katherine Nanney, Abigail Justis and Mallory Justis. Dr. Justis is also survived by a stepdaughter, Martha Porter Yelton and husband, Bob, of Shelby and their son, Porter, and by a stepdaughter, Mary Fitzpatrick and husband, Jim, of Clearwater, Fla., and their children, Joseph, Jimmy and Madeline.
Dr. Justis was educated at Holy Cross Academy in Lynchburg, Va., and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Virginia. After completing a rotating internship in Jersey City, N.J., he served in a MASH unit in Korea for two years. He then moved to Charlotte to train in pathology for one year. He spent one year in Detroit as a general surgery resident, returning to Charlotte in 1950 to complete his urology residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center). Dr. Justis began his practice in 1953 with McKay, Baird, Justis, Story and Scholl (now Charlotte Urology Group), where he remained for his professional career. Dr. Justis was a beloved and renowned physician and was devoted to his parents. In recognition for his contributions to medicine and urology, The Homer R. Justis M.D. Award was established by Carolinas Medical Center to honor the resident physician who provided the most contributions to patient care and teaching as voted by the attending physicians in urology. After Dr. Justis’ retirement from private practice in 1996, he continued to contribute his talent for teaching and service to the Carolinas Medical Center Clinic and to its residency program.
Dr. Justis had a rich sense of humor, and was devoted to his family. He loved gardening and was an excellent landscaper, gardener and horticulturist. Dr. Justis loved sports, and was an excellent baseball player at the University of Virginia. He was physician for the Golden Gloves tournament, Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Charlotte Checkers at various points in his medical career. He remained active in the Air National Guard reserves, and retired from the Air National Guard as a full colonel. Dr. Justis was well read and delighted in history, fiction, editorials and current events. He was a member of the Charlotte Philosophy Club, a group of physicians and other professionals dedicated to the discussion of philosophy and current events.
Dr. Justis was a lifelong member of Dilworth United Methodist Church in Charlotte and attended church at Central United Methodist Church in Shelby.
Dr. Justis was a member of Charlotte Country Club, Dilworth Rotary Club and various professional societies. Instead of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Central United Methodist Church, Dilworth United Methodist Church, the University of Virginia Student Aid Foundation or to Hospice of Cleveland County.
The family will receive friends today at the home, 108 Lynhurst Lane, Shelby, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday at Harry and Bryant, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at Dilworth United Methodist Church, 605 East Blvd., Charlotte, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8.

J.R. Bowen
SHELBY — Mr. J.R. Bowen, 81, of Dixon Street, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 18, 1921, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Braxton Mayberry Bowen and Mary Lee Hardin Bowen. He retired from Esther Mill Co., graduated from the N.C. School for the Deaf in Morganton and was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church, Deaf Department in Shelby, a member of the Sunshine Club for the Deaf, where he was past treasurer and president.
He is survived by his wife, Alyse Qualls Bowen of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, John Ronald and Robin Bowen of Shelby; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Kay and Larry Emery and Marie and Robin Hendrick, all of Shelby; a sister, Ella Lee Mode of Shelby; grandchildren, Amy Hendrick of Nashville, Tenn., Kelly Hendrick, Matt Emery and his wife, Amy, Megan Emery, Josh Bowen and Jordan Bowen, all of Shelby; and devoted caregiver, Hazel Lee of Shelby.
The funeral will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating and Holly M. Bivens will be the deaf interpreter. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Interment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Gwendolyn Roach
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Gwendolyn Long Roach, 78, of 304 Kingswood Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Padgett and King Mortuary, with the Rev. Ron Boone officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary one hour before the service and at other times at the home of Wanda and Randy Page, 364 Dixie Trail Drive, Forest City.
Carolyn Willis
SHELBY — Mrs. Carolyn Carrick Willis (Mrs. William Clem “Bill” Willis), 80, of 1312 Crestview Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, she graduated from Shelby High in 1939 and had always been active in organizing class reunions. Mrs. Willis was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a former member of its Golden Circle Class and Young at Hearts group. Even when she could no longer attend services, Carolyn remained a vital presence and spiritual inspiration to Aldersgate.
She also graduated from Southern Business College and with her husband, Bill, co-owned the Willis General Store on Highway 18 N. from 1967 to 1971. Her primary career, in which she took great pride, was one of service, as a wonderful daughter, mother, wife and friend. She was truly “a part of all she had met.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clem “Bill” Willis; her parents, Helen Gardner Carrick and Thomas Bright Carrick; and a beloved sister, Helen Carrick McSwain.
Surviving are her daughter, Julia Willis of Quincy, Mass; her “other daughter,” Laurel Blanchard, also of Quincy; her devoted nephew, Tom McSwain of Shelby; her primary caregiver, Josephine Massey; many loving, loyal friends; and her longtime canine companion, Benji.
Preceding a funeral service at Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, with Dr. Jeff Patterson and the Rev. Jenny Justice of Boston officiating, family and friends will be receiving from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Epworth Building, also at Aldersgate.
Following the service, prayers will be said at the Mausoleum at Cleveland Memorial Park.

John Philbeck
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. John Lee Philbeck, 82, of White Oak Manor, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robbie Eng officiating. Burial will be in Martin Family Cemetery, Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
David Gosnell
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. David Michael Gosnell, 49, of 105 Oakley Lane, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003.
He was born in Gaston County, on April 5, 1954, the son of Miriam Crouse Gosnell of Belmont and the late Thomas Culyer. A member of First Wesleyan Church, Cherryville, he was a graduate of Appalachian State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree, and Gaston College and was employed by Rutherford Electric Membership Corp., Cherryville office, as a material handler for the last eight years.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Price Gosnell of the home; a stepson, Jonathan Glenn Parker of Lincolnton; a stepdaughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Parker of the home; two brothers, Ronnie Gosnell of Gastonia and Arnold Gosnell of Lexington; and two sisters, Judy Quilliams of Mount Holly and Donna Kinley of Gastonia.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Mark Poe officiating.
Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery, Cherryville.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service and at other times at the home.

Nancy Cogdell
SHELBY — Mrs. Nancy Carol Clark Cogdell, 68, of 843 W. Warren St., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2003, at home.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Gus Hunt and Cola Mae Pruitt Clark. She was a homemaker, loving mama and grandma. She was a member of Harmony Independent Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, James Woodard Cogdell; a son, Jimmy Lee Cogdell; two grandchildren, John Paul Davis and Melanie Elaine Melton; a brother, Pete Clark; and three sisters, Eva Gold, Margie Tilley and Louise Shehan.
She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Leroy Melton Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Shelby, and James Wayne Cogdell of the home; seven daughters, Frankie Bridges and husband, David, of the home; Vanessa Nalley and husband, Dickie, Joan Trusdale and husband, Bart, Tonya Carter and husband, Jimmy, and Wanda Champion, all of Shelby, Carmen Bradley and husband, Ronnie, and Connie Cogdell, both of Polkville; one sister-in-law, Darcus Clark of Grover; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Harmony Baptist Church, Polkville, with the Revs. Leroy Melton Jr., Billy Bowen and David Bridges officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the home.

Rev. Otis Wheelhouse Jr.
ELLENBORO — Rev. Otis James Wheelhouse Jr., 70, of 124 Seaboard Road, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Rutherford Hospital.
He was a native of Richmond, Va., a son of the late Otis James Wheelhouse Sr. and Gladys Fix Wheelhouse. He retired as Director of Missions of Sandy Run Baptist Association after 22 years of service, where he designed the new office complex. He was a graduate of John Marshall High School, Richmond, where he was 1st Lt. in F. Co. of the Cadet Corps. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he completed the resident requirements for the Master of Theology. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, Ellenboro. He was Student Assistant to the Pastor of Biltmore Baptist Church, Glen Allen, Va. He pastored at Pine Grove Baptist Mission, Petersburg, Va., and while serving there, he was ordained by Northminster Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. He was Minister of Education at Roxboro Baptist Church, Minister of Education at Brevard First Baptist Church, Director of Missions at the Transylvania Baptist Association and had served as Interim Pastor of Piney Mountain Baptist Church, Ellenboro. He was past president of Brevard Rotary Club, a former scoutmaster in Richmond, Va., and was a member of the VFW and Ellenboro Woodmen of the World. He served in the Air Force as an air traffic controller in Japan during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Allene Keeton Wheelhouse of the home; one brother, Johnnie and wife, Bev Wheelhouse of Richmond, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church, Ellenboro, with the Revs. Ad Hopper, Eugene Passmore and David Jendrey officiating.
Visitation will follow the service at the church.

Melba Hendrick
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Melba Warlick Hendrick, 75, of Summitt Place, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Mary’s Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Lytle officiating.
Burial will be in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Cherryville.
The family will receive friends at the church in the fellowship hall one hour before the service.
