Millard Metcalf

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Millard L. Metcalf, 76, of 317 Brice St., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard Prow officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home.

Charlie Thomas Jr.

SHELBY — Mr. Charlie “George” David Thomas Jr., 56, of 801 Surrey Drive, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A native of Cleveland County, he was born Oct. 15, 1946, and worked in the textile industry.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie D. Thomas Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Ollie Mae Warren of Shelby; his brothers, Billy Thomas of Shelby and Charles Thomas and his wife, Brenda, of Shelby; his nephew, Charles Thomas Jr., of Shelby; his niece, Pamela Thomas of Shelby; a great-nephew, Michael Jabbusch; two great-nieces, Chasity and Kayla Thomas; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. today, and at other times at the home.

Ora Patterson

SHELBY — Mrs. Ora Lou Patterson, 86, of 404 Whitener St., died Friday, July 18, 2003 at her home.

She was born in Cleveland County on May 4, 1917, and retired from Lily Mill. She was a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church and the Lily Mill Old Timers Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Patterson; her parents, Frank and Ollie Pruett Poole; two brothers, Arthur Poole and Clyton Poole; and four sisters, Ellie Philbeck, Pauline Eskridge, Ocie McSwain and Mae Poole.

She is survived by a son and his companion, Jerry Patterson and Betsy Wolfe of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Thomas Kimbell of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Steve Fortenberry of Shelby; a brother, Ezelle Poole of Shelby; a sister, Brunie Roper of Cherryville; grandchildren, Tommy Kimbell, Terri and Jim Contento, Scott and Pam Patterson, Daniel Fortenberry and Micah Patterson; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah Spurling, Michelle Patterson and Michaela Dupre.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bobby Elmore officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Family headquarters will be at the home of Joyce and Steve Fortenberry, 216 College Ave., Shelby.

Heath Clayton

FOREST CITY — Mr. Heath Sorrells Clayton, 22, of 759 Providence Road, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Hines Road in Mooresboro.

The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tara Ebner officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Sallie Chambers

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Ms. Sallie Mae Chambers, 77, of 737 Canterbury Road died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

Funeral arrangements and will be announced by J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home.

Lillian Morrison

GROVER — Mrs. Lillian Willis Morrison, 90, of 919 Bethlehem Church Road, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Summit Place in Kings Mountain.

She was a daughter of the late John and Jessie Mae Willis and retired from Firestone Textile Mills. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Gibbs Morrison; her daughters, Edith M. Bridges and Sadie Morrison; her sister, Edna Nodine; and her brothers, Dan, Frank and Fred Willis.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Morrison and his wife, Nancy, of Gastonia, and Mike Morrison of Cramerton; a daughter and her husband, Becky and Ron Gooch of Toronto, Canada; her sisters, Florence White and her husband, Zeno, of Polkville, Dot White of Shelby and Nell Morrison of Boiling Springs; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The location of the funeral has been changed to Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel. The service is today at 11 a.m. with Ron Gooch officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Cleveland Funeral Services.

‘Dot’ Hayes

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Ms. Dorothy S. “Dot” Hayes, 80, of 211 Fulton St., Kings Mountain, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville.

A native of Kings Mountain, she was born on March 16, 1923, and was a daughter of Oliver Thomas “O.T.” Hayes Sr., and Ruth Eaker Hayes.

Ms. Hayes graduated from Kings Mountain High School and attended Geyer Business College of Charlotte. She served as a radio operator in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. She lived in Charleston, S.C., for many years, where she worked and retired from the South Carolina Ports Authority.

In Cleveland County, she served as a magistrate for nine years and as vice-chairperson for the Kings Mountain ABC board. Ms. Hayes was a lifetime active member of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. She sang in the Junior and Senior Choirs, served as chairperson of the Council on Ministries, secretary to the Administration Board, treasurer of the Adult Class of United Methodist Woman, food coordinator for Bereaved Families and fulfilled her dream of setting up the History Room at her church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, O.T. Hayes and Ruth Eaker, and her siblings, Nell H. Teeter, Ernest Hayes, O.T. Hayes, Jr., Betty H. Moss, and two sisters who died before she was born, Eunice Floyd Hayes and Ivia Lee Hayes.

Survivors include her brother, Ned Hayes, and his wife Doris “Mutt” of Burlington; and her sister, JoAnne Harrison of Hollywood, S.C.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Janice Combs officiating. Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.

Nancy Wright

SHELBY — Mrs. Nancy Lanier Wright, 72, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

A member of Zion Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyle Hudson Wright; her parents, William Chesterfields and Chassie Mae Gantt Lanier; and two brothers, Packard and Max Lanier.

She is survived by her sons, Clyde Daniel Wright and his wife, Helen Faye, and Larry William Wright, all of Lawndale; daughters, Martha Ray of Jonesville, S.C., Geraldine Bostic and her husband, Ronnie, of Shelby, and Della Randall and her husband, Pat, of Lawndale; her brother, Glenn Lanier of Lincolnton; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m., at Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Randy Bridges and the Rev. Russell Fitts officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Zion Baptist Church, 525 W. Zion Church Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Edna Graves

CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Edna M. Bess Graves, 83, of 609 Clyde St., Cherryville, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Carolina Care Center.

She was born in Gaston County on July 14, 1920, to the late Walter Bess and Emma Cobb Bess. She was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Graves, three brothers and a sister, Geretha Brooks, Hunter, Walter and Mallard L. Bess.

She graduated from John Chavis High School and Winston-Salem State University. She was a member of Rudisill Chapel AME Zion Church, having served as Sunday school teacher, missionary, class leader, Buds of Promise and former Lay Council president. She also was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Civitan Club, Yuletide Club, was the first female inducted into the Hall of Fame and was a former member of the Gaston County Human Relations Committee.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred M. Graves of the home; two sons, Alphonse M. Graves of Cherryville and Ronald T. Graves of Spartanburg, S.C.; four grandchildren, Ashton, Jeanie, Preston and Corey Graves, and one great-grandchild, Kendall Lyter.

The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Stinson officiating. Burial will follow in Cherryville City Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday at Rudisill Chapel AME Zion Church.

Ebony & White’s Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Sallie House

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Sallie F. House, 102, of 460 Hill Road in Lincolnton, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at home.

The funeral was held Friday at Link’s Chapel AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Debra Hall officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Ebony & White’s Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Tony Williams

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Tony Rogers Williams, 53, of 116 Velvet Drive, died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at his home.

A memorial service is today at 6 p.m. at Greene Funeral Service West Chapel in Gastonia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Burial will be at Mount Olivet Methodist Church.

‘Mike’ Tignor

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Michael “Mike” Reid Tignor, 56, of 2137 Brookforest Drive, Kings Mountain, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

He was a native of Cleveland County and a son of Gene Tignor of Kings Mountain and the late Dorothy “Dot” Cobb Tignor. He was the husband of the late Beverly Hughes Tignor. He was a member of Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain, and was retired from Reliance Electric Co., Kings Mountain. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, Jason Tignor of Cary; a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Edmondson and husband, Brian, of Kings Mountain; and a brother, Ronnie Tignor and wife, Shirley, of Kings Mountain.

The funeral will be Monday afternoon at 2 at the Resurrection Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ken Gilligan and Doug Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, Building Program, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Betty Allen

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Betty Allen, 64, of 408 Brice Street, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was born March 16, 1939, a daughter of Let Dover of Shelby and Mattie Louise Martin Allen of Kings Mountain.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Julie Pasour, her brother, Walter Dover, and a daughter-in-law, Sharon James Allen.

Other than her parents, she is survived by her husband of 50 years, Don Allen of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Pat Allen, Jimmie and Karla Allen and Kenny Allen, all of Kings Mountain; daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Matthew Morris and Kathy Allen, all of Gastonia, and Christina and Jeff Watkins and Teresa Allen, all of Kings Mountain; brothers, James Dover of Shelby, Thomas Dover of Kings Mountain and Pete Dover of Gastonia; sister, Annette Cavender of Bessemer City; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 3 at Greene Funeral Service West Chapel.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the chapel.
