SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Mr. Billy Gene Bridges, 64, of 116 Robbison Circle, Syracuse, N.Y., died Friday, June 20, 2003, in Syracuse.

Faye Batchelor
GREENWOOD, S.C. — Mrs. Faye Bevis Batchelor, 48, of 105 Melanie Court died June 21, 2003, at home.
A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, Gaffney, S.C., with the Rev. Dean Painter officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 7 at White Columns of Gaffney, S.C., and other times at the home of her brother, 3844 Chesnee Highway, Gaffney.
Martha Dawkins
SHELBY — Mrs. Martha Lee Caldwell Dawkins departed this life on June 19, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Cleveland County, born April 14, 1927, to the late Sam Caldwell and Bessie Johnson Caldwell. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker and a faithful member of Fairview AME Zion Church, where she served as president of the Usher Board, Class Leader, Deaconess, Mother of the Church and teacher of the Primary Class. She was known for her “All Occasion Card Ministry.” During her service, she received various appreciations and awards.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dawkins Jr.; her sisters, Ada C. Dawkins, Pearlie Mae Allison and Ruby J. Caldwell; and brothers, George Caldwell, Arlie Caldwell and Fred Caldwell.
She leaves to cherish fond memories three sons, Tommy L. Dawkins (Mary) of Shelby, Robert Gary Dawkins and George Anthony Dawkins (Kim) of Charlotte; six daughters, Brenda Ann Roseboro, Verna Sue McCluney (Larry), Martha Marie Smith (Thomas) of Shelby, Linda K. McDuffie, Shirley Diana Hunt (Jerry) and Roberta Grace Dawkins of Charlotte; a grandson raised by her and her husband, Antwan D. Dawkins; one brother, L.J. Caldwell (Rebecca) of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters-in-law, Alice Caldwell, Jessie Mae Mintz of Shelby, Elnora Caldwell of Spartanburg, S.C. and Johnnie Mae Morrison of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother-in-law, John Dawkins of Buffalo, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and church family.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Fairview A.M.E. Zion Church, Earl, with the Rev. Marion Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Dennis Hamrick
SHELBY — Mr. Dennis Larry Hamrick, 59, of 112 Johnson Road, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at home.
Born May 1, 1944, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Cecil Barnett and Ruth Mae Hamrick. He retired from Celanese after 26 years and was a member of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club. He also served in the Army.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Greene Hamrick of the home; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Alan and Sherry Hamrick of Grover and David Michael and Melessia Hamrick of Kings Mountain; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Wendell Hamrick and Royce and Linda Hamrick, all of Shelby and Robert Barnett of Newton; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Hazel and Randy Baxter of Fallston and Debra and Richard Plotast of Murells Inlet, S.C.; and grandchildren, Ambreia, Nekole, Ashlee Blayne and Adam Lee.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Tommy Buchanan officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Selma Crawley
SHELBY — Mrs. Selma Branton Crawley, 92, of 855 W. Marion St., died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Dr. Joseph Reeves officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
Era Hawk
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ms. Era Hawk, 91, of 5425 Western Ave. NW, died Friday, June 20, 2003, in Washington, D.C.

Ted Horne
LOWELL — Mr. Laurie Ted Horne, 64, of 808 Dogwood St., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Waccamaw Community Hospital at Murrells Inlet, S.C.
Mr. Laurie Ted Horne, Mayor of Lowell, retired as a South Point High School teacher and was a contractor and developer. He was born in Mooresboro and moved to McAdenville at an early age. He attended McAdenville Elementary School, graduated from Lowell-Holbrook High School, played four years on the varsity football team, was captain of the football team and won Most Valuable Trophy Award, attended N.C. State University for one year and then entered the U.S. Army and served with the N.C. National Guard as a combat engineer.
He was a graduate of Western Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree as an education, fine and industrial arts major. He was editor of the 1963 Catamount yearbook at Western Carolina. He was a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Upon graduation, he worked for DuPont Chemicals in Brevard as a methods analyst. He then entered the teaching profession, where he taught drafting at Lee Edwards High School in Asheville for one year until 1967.
He moved to Gaston County as Vocational Director for Gaston County Schools, he taught Mechanical Drafting and Construction at East Gaston High School and retired from South Point High School, where he also taught Mechanical Drafting and Construction.
During his teaching profession, he also was a developer and contractor of homes. He and his son, Zack, were co-owners of Horne Building Services Inc. and developed subdivisions Damon Pointe in Belmont and Tomshir Estates on New Hope Road. He completed flight training at Gaston College in 2003. He was a former member of Lowell Optimist Club, member of City of Lowell Recreation Committee for two years, served on the Lowell City Council for four years, City of Lowell Planning & Zoning Board for five years and was elected Mayor of Lowell in 2001. He was a member of McAdenville Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Horne; a son, Rocky Damon Horne; and a brother, Bob Horne.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Leake Horne; a son and his wife, Zack Konrad and Beth Horne of Belmont; one granddaughter, Avery Horne of Belmont; his mother, Ginnie Vee Hutchins Horne of Lowell; one brother and his wife, Dan and Joyce Horne of Durham; and two sisters and their husbands, Phyllis and Brent McDaniel of Kings Mountain and Betty and Gerald Petty of Lowell.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at McAdenville Baptist Church, with Dr. Ralph Halliwill officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.
Pallbearers are Rhett Cozart, Rod Rudisill, Richard Horne, David McDaniel, Mark Buchanan and John Beinhorn.
Honorary pallbearers are the Lowell City Manager, Lowell City Council, Dick Roberts Sunday School Class of McAdenville Baptist Church, teachers of South Point High School and Village Restaurant Breakfast Club.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 9 at McAdenville Baptist Church.

HICKORY — Mr. A.F. Elmore, 81, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at his home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Catawba Funerals & Cremations, with the Rev. Dale Faulkenberry officiating. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the Celebration of Life Room.
Dempsey Wortman
CASAR — Mr. Joe Dempsey Wortman, 55, of 138 Beechnut Creek Road, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at home.
Born June 29, 1947, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Joe Self Wortman and Alberta Eaker Wortman, both of Casar. He was formerly employed by Southern Bell in Morganton. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and served in the Army.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife Lenore Grigg Wortman of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jud and Amanda Wortman of Casar; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rebecca and Donald Peeler and Rachel James, all of Lawndale and Jennifer and Jimmy Summerlin of Polkville; two brothers, Dennis Wortman of Casar and Devon Wortman of Cornelius; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be tonight at 7:30 at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Cook officiating. A private burial will be held Saturday at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service and at other times at the home of the son, Jud and Amanda Wortman, 124 Beechnut Creek Road, Casar.

GROVER — Mrs. Martha Lee Caldwell Dawkins, 76, of 244 Roseboro Road, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.

John Royster Jr.
CHAPEL HILL — Mr. John Bunyan Royster Jr., 84, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003.
A native of Grover, he was born on May 14, 1919. He served 21 years with the U. S. Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. Afterward, he worked with the Army Reserve in Wilson and was a District Manager for Field Enterprises (World Book). He spent the last six years residing in Chapel Hill. He was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and North Carolina Tarheels.
He leaves behind his former wife, Maxine; children Laura “Lulu” and dog “Missy;” two sons, John III and wife Maryann, and Ron and wife Tu; brother Frank; sister Thelma Janelle Carmack; nephews, Steve, Mike and wife Susan, Steve, Elaine; great-nephews, Mark, Ben, Brian, Josh and wife Heather, Matthew and wife Jessee. He also leaves behind all of his “adopted” children at the K&W Restaurant of Chapel Hill as well as legions of friends in Cleveland County and across the country.
A memorial gathering to celebrate his life will be held Saturday at the home of a son, Ron and wife, Tu, at 7700 Morrow Mill, Chapel Hill; (919) 304-2200.
A reception starts at 1 p.m. and memorial service at 3 p.m., followed by an old fashioned wake through the evening.

FOREST CITY —Mr. Hal M. Fisher, 69, of 403 Old Caroleen Road, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Haven-N-Hills Rest Home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Smith Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jerry Vess and David Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
