Elvena Self
GROVER - Mrs. Elvena Marie Beaver Self, 82, of White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain, formerly of 904 Hampton St., Shelby, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at her home.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Lemuel S. and Lenar M. Smart Beaver. She retired from PPG Industries and belonged to Landmark Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, M.H. Self; a son, Charles McKee; three brothers, Caphus Ray Beaver, Theodore Beaver and Everette Beaver; and five sisters, Effie Tesseneer, Docia Powell, Minnie Gold, Dannie Swink and Corine White.
She is survived by a son, C. Lawrence McKee of Grover; three grandchildren, Steve McKee and his wife, Angela, of Grover, Kim Henson and her husband, Matthew, of Shelby, and Robbin McKee of Atlanta; five great-grandchildren, Mariah McKee, Marcus McKee, Austin McKee, Ashlee Drake and Emilee Henson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with the Rev. Allen Davis officiating.
There will be no formal visitation.
Memorials may be made to Landmark Baptist Church, 1724 E. Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152.

BESSEMER CITY - Mr. Ralph Jimmy Boone, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Westview Gardens, with military honors by American Legion Post No. 243.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

GROVER - Mrs. Mary Lee Shear of 101 Melvin Court, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Shirley Wingard
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Shirley Mae Hambright Wingard, 58, of 307 Edel St., died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cherokee County, S.C., on Nov. 22, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Robert E. Lee Hambright and Lois Lorene Pennington Hambright.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Eugene Wingard Sr. of the home; two sons, Frank Lambert and Donald Eugene Wingard Jr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Myra L. and Larry Stine of Grover; three brothers, Willie Hambright of Waco, Larry Hambright of Kings Mountain and Junior Hambright of Blacksburg, S.C.; five sisters, Lois Owenby of Mooresboro, Brenda Gaddy of Grover, Jean Morrow of Kings Mountain, Mary Jones of Statesville and Gloria Aldridge of Belmont; seven grandchildren, Brandon Stine, Damien Childers, Shellie Shirey, Jessica Lambert, Alina Lambert, Michael Lambert and B.J. Lambert; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Shirey and Anna Maladonado.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at True Gospel Holiness Church, with the Rev. Jerry Helms officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Greene Funeral Service Westside Chapel, Gastonia.
John Thurman Jr.
KINGSTOWN - Mr. John Thomas Thurman Jr., 81, of 1914 Petty Road, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was born in Monticello, Ga., on Nov. 22, 1920, a son of the late John Thomas and Daisy Malone Thurman. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from PPG Industries and from Palmer Grove Baptist Church, where he served as custodian. He also belonged to Palmer Grove Baptist Church, where he served as former chairman of the Deacon Family Ministry Plan, also an honorary member. He belonged to Senior Citizens Club of Kingstown and Providence Lodge No. 2.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of more than 34 years, Ruby Norris Thurman; a son, John Steven Thurman; a sister, Ella Thurman Odom; and two brothers, James E. Thurman and Jimmy L. Thurman.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Thurman Huskey and Tracy Thurman of Shelby; four sons, Donnie Thurman and his wife, Debra, Jackie K. Thurman, Karl T. Thurman and Michael D. Thurman, all of Shelby; five sisters, Bertha Thurman, Bessie Briscoe and her husband, Marion, of Kingstown, Effie Ruff and Emma Hopper of Shelby and Annie Whisnant of Lawndale; four brothers, Willie Thurman of Kingstown, Johnny "Harvey" Thurman and his wife, Ruth, of Shelby, and Horace Hardwick and Dee Rooks of Monticello, Ga.; and a loyal friend of more than 10 years, Corine Cabiness of Shelby.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Palmer Grove Baptist Church, with the pastor, James L. Smith, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.
