John R. Carpenter
GROVER - John R. Carpenter, 61, of 1038 Lavender Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Carl Haywood Carpenter. He attended New Buffalo Baptist Church in Grover and was retired from Eaton Corporation in Kings Mountain. He served in the United States Navy.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lewis Haywood Carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Pack Carpenter, of Grover; four sons and daughters-in-law, Danny Ray Carpenter of Kings Mountain, Buren Hamrick of Shelby, Rick and Sandra Hamrick of Shelby and Robert and Stella Hamrick of Marion; a daughter, Valray C. Conovers of Kings Mountain; a mother, Helen Huffstetler Jennings of Grover; a brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Frankie Carpenter of Kings Mountain; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, Harris Funeral Home, with the Revs. Leonard Huffstetler and Tim Hardin officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Cleatus Whisnant Jr.
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Cleatus "J.R" Whisnant Jr., 83, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Belaire Health Care Center in Gastonia.
A native of Rutherford County, he was born March 27, 1918, the son of the late David Cleatus and Girtha Robbins Whisnant. He became associated with Piedmont Tool and Plumbing Supplies 54 years ago and since 1969 has been its owner and operator. During World War II, he served in the Army and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 383.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Melba Jolley Whisnant, who died in 1998.
He is survived by his son, Gene Whisnant of Sunriver, Ore.; three daughters, Gail Adams of Columbia, S.C., Teresa Clary of Gastonia and Debbie Boone of Lenoir; seven grandchildren, Todd Whisnant, Leslie Shaneman, Robby Adams, Kevin Clary, Blake Wilson, Dana Boone and Taylor Boone; two great-grandsons; a sister, Adean Cobb of Ellenboro; and a brother, Robert Whisnant of Ellenboro.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Hankins and Whittington Dilworth Chapel with Bill Cobb officiating. Burial with military honors by the American Legion will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Ben Tesseneer
SHELBY - Mr. Ben Tesseneer, 73, of 2000 Barker Blvd., died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired plant engineer for Shelby Elastics and worked at Mauney Hosiery Mill in Kings Mountain for 25 years. He was a member of Shelby Missionary Methodist Church. He was a gardener and worked on small and large engines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin C. and Lela Dixon Tesseneer; three brothers, Charles Tesseneer, Max Tesseneer and John Tesseneer; and two sisters, Docia McIntyre and Mary Howard.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Myrl Wright Tesseneer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and the Rev. Don Clontz and Shirley and the Rev. David Black, all of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Joyce Tesseneer of Shelby; five grandchildren and their spouses and significant others, Scott and Sissy Black, Tim Black and Toshia Hambright, Jenniffer Black and Danny Hunt, Sara and Travis Withers and Jason and Michelle Clontz and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 7 p.m. at Shelby Missionary Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Kniceley officiating. A private burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at the church.

DENVER, N.C. - Mr. Lewis Zimmer "Jim" Howie Jr., 74, of 7938 Placid Court, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999.
A private graveside service will be Thursday at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby with the Rev. Charles Ingle officiating.

Liddie "Lib" Reid
HICKORY - Mrs. Liddie "Lib" Lorie Terry Reid died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, she was born on August 28, 1930, the daughter of the late Gaither and Rilla Mae Erwood Terry. She was a homemaker and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ in Morganton.
She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Reid of the home; three daughters, Rita Kaye Reid Byrd of Connelly Springs, Karen Reid McDaniel and Martha Mae Reid McDaniel, both of Newton; four sons, Jason William Reid, Julius Lee Reid and Mason McLaine Reid, all of the home and Kevin Glen Reid of Granite Falls; two brothers, Guy Terry of Rutherfordton and Julius Jack Terry of Hickory; two sisters, Dorothy Lawson of Shelby and Merle Stringfield of Sawmills; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Oakland Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Joel Cook officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Julius Reid, Tony McDaniel, Marty McDaniel, Daniel Byrd, Scott Lawson, Wayne Lawson, Andy Lawson and Ray Terry.

LAWNDALE - Mrs. Mary Lee Thrift, 43, of 115 Acre Rock Road, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at University of Tennessee Medical Center.
A native of Dallas, Texas, she was born the daughter of the late Grady Lee Thrift and Frances Cody Thrift Watts. She was a member of Double Shoals Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Leonard Joe Elmore and Scott Wade Elmore, both of Lawndale; one brother, Billy Lee Thrift of Shelby; her step-father, Leonard Watts of Lawndale; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Double Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Reece officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

GASTONIA - Mr. Joe Billy Word, 76, of the Brian Center, formerly of Lincolnton, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at the Brian Center.

Jerry Putnam
SHELBY - Mr. Jerry Clayton Putnam, 67, of 628 Annieline Drive, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Red Springs, he was born the son of the late Samuel Clayton Putnam and Onnie Johnson Putnam McSwain of Shelby. He was a retired self-employed truck driver. He was a member of North Lafayette Street Baptist Church.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward "Ed" Putnam. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his partner, Loona Hoppes Sansing of the home; one step-son, Roger Sansing of Shelby; one step-daughter, Patricia Gardner of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wallace and Peggy Putnam of Shelby and Kenneth and Linda Putnam of Greensboro; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Morrison officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park. Elva Pressley
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Elva Watterson Pressley, 89, of Cary, formerly of Charlotte, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at her home.
Born March 21, 1912, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late John Price Watterson and Mary Ida Dixon Watterson. She was a homemaker and a gifted seamstress and had been employed with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for a number of years. She was a charter member of Briar Creek Road Baptist Church, where she was very active her entire life. She attended Macedonia Ridge Baptist Church in Raleigh.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde S. Pressley.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Betty Pressley of Charlotte and John and Karen Pressley of Ocean Isle Beach; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Mike Joyce of Cary; three sisters, Addie Borders of Shelby, Ruth Conder of Charlotte and Lois Helms of High Point; four grandchildren, John Pressley Jr. of Charleston, S.C., Shannon Pressley and Julie Louch, both of Charlotte, Sherry Sanders of Simpsonville, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 5301 Albemarle Road in Charlotte, with Dr. Steve Barker and the Rev. Paul Billingsley officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.
