Vera Smiley
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Vera Blanton Smiley, 90, of Peachtree Centre, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at the center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Lester and Amanda Dayne Henderson Blanton. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Philip W. Smiley.
She is survived by five daughters, Joann S. Vassey and Nancy S. Childers, both of Shelby, Juliette S. Davis of Gastonia, Mary S. Campbell of Gaffney and Patricia S. Hines of Forest City; a son, Philip W. Smiley of Cherryville; two brothers, Melvin Blanton of Gaffney and Kermit Blanton of Gastonia; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Entombment will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Scott Davis officiating.
The family will be at the home of Mary Campbell, 944 Overbrook Drive, Gaffney.

Ben Grigg Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. Ben Warren Grigg Sr., 82, of 709 W. Oak St., died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Cleveland County, he was retired from Celanese and was a member of Westview Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edley Frank and Nora Short Grigg; three brothers, Ralph Grigg, J.D. Grigg, Rass Grigg and Max Grigg; and a sister, Kate G. Cornwell.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Hamrick Grigg of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra G. and A.L. Parrish III of Hampton, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ben Warren Jr. and Kathryn W. Grigg of Shelby and Stephen Craig Grigg of New York City; two grandsons and their spouses, Bradford W. and Kristy Grigg of Shelby and Brett W. Grigg of Nebo; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Grigg of Shelby; a great-grandson, Caleb Grigg of Shelby; and a brother and sister-in-law, Hall W. and Joan Grigg of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Service with the Rev. Mike Shumate officiating. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home.

ELLENBORO - Miss Ruby Guffey of Glenn Street died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.

LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Carrie Lee Allen Smith Barnes, 72, of 1308 E. Water St., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder John Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Tuckers Grover United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

LAWNDALE - Mr. John "J.D" Gidney, 77, of 112 Pony Barn Road, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at his home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home of a sister, Annie McKnight, 130 Gold St., Lawndale.

John Paul
FOREST CITY - Retired United States Marine Corps Col. John F. Paul, 83, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Rutherford Hospital.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Forest City with Dr. Charles Davenport officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Elvin Barnette
HUNTERSVILLE - Mr. Elvin Ray Barnette, 93, of 13001 Old Statesville Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 12, 1908, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Crawford Thomas Webb and Lillian Etta Davis Barnette. He retired as divisional manager from Bordens Milk & Ice Cream Co. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the Quarter Century Club for Bordens. He was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Angelee Ross Barnette.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E. and Mary S. Barnette of Taylorsville and Charles "Charlie" R. and Kathleen Barnette of Huntersville; a daughter, Dorothy B. Smith of Kinston; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Norton officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Florence Cook
CONNELLY SPRINGS - Mrs. Florence Smith Cook, 71, of 4150 Mount Gilead Church Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
She was born March 17, 1930, in Burke County. She was retired from Burke Mills, where she was a supervisor. She was the daughter of the late Pinkney "Pink" and Ella Buff Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clemmie Alvin Cook; a son, Johnny Ray Cook; a daughter, Linda Jane Cook; two brothers, and three sisters.
She is survived by two sons, David Cook of Morganton and Bobby Cook of Lawndale; a daughter, Brenda Smith of Connelly Springs; five brothers, Franklin Smith, Howard Smith, Ace Smith, Joe Smith and Reed Smith, all of Connelly Springs; four sisters, Sudie Falls of Glen Alpine, Mae Swink and Lucy Lail, both of Connelly Springs, and Iva Cook of Casar; a niece, Merle Tallent of Caser; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Wednesday in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with burial in Olive Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Stamey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Maude Twitty
FLORIDA - Mrs. Maude Frances Bennett Twitty, 78, formerly of Asheville, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Florida.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Hill AME Zion Church in Union Mills.
Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery.

Charles Moore
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Charles Dwight Moore died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Carolina Medical Center.
Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Catawba, he was the son of the late George I. And Iola Robbins Moore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dwight Moore Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Daniels Moore; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eric D. Moore and Joel E. and Cassi Moore; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Moore and Harry Waters; seven grandchildren, Bryan Moore, Holly Waters, Will Waters, Paul Waters, Jessica Moore, Jonathan Moore and Alison Moore; two brothers, Kenneth R. Moore of Greensboro and Richard T. Moore of Mechanicsville, Va.; and 18 nieces and nephews.
He served as a waist gunner on a B17 Flying Fortress with the 15th Air Force in Italy during World War II. He flew missions over Austria and Romania and was recognized as an ACE after having shot down at least eight German fighter planes. Time Magazine approached him to put his photo on their cover but he refused. He would never talk about this part of his life. In later years he was an active associate member of the 8th Air Force 66th Fighting Wing, a group emanating from his service in World War II.
He was a member of the famous boxing team at Central High School in the early 1940s and was offered scholarships to several universities, but decided to give up boxing and stay close to Charlotte. He attended Davidson College, graduating in 1949. He became a CPA and joined the staff of George G. Scott & Co. and spent his entire career with the firm, retiring in 1993.
He loved traveling, gardening, trout fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Dilworth United Methodist Church, where he served as church treasurer for many years.
He was a member of the Navajo Club and the Central High School Athletes Breakfast Club.
The funeral was Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Dilworth United Methodist Church. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Robert Reid Jones Jr., 72, of 883 Toms Lake Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at his home.
