Leonard Smith Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Leonard A. Smith Sr., 57, of 1559 Stoney Point Road, Shelby, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the supervisor of shipping and warehouse at Parker Hydraulics in Kings Mountain. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church and the Shelby Shag Club. He served in Vietnam in the Marines "Force Recon" and he was awarded the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Terry Childers Smith of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Leonard A. Jr. and Adriane Smith and Rusty McAbee, all of Kings Mountain; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth Smith and Kenny Hoefle of Gastonia and Melissa and David Simon of Kings Mountain; his mother, Virginia Allen Smith of Kings Mountain; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Leonard Wright and Sheila and Harold Ervin, all of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren, Zachary Smith, Austin Smith, Trey Hoefle and Courtney Hoefle.
The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Don Williams and Mark Bardsley officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church.

James Hunter
DENVER, N.C. - Mr. James David Hunter, 80, of 482 N. Little Egypt Road, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at 535 2nd Street Place, S.W. in Conover.
Arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White's Funeral Service.
Ophelia Webber
SHELBY - Mrs. Ophelia Bridges Webber, 94, of 305 Sunrise Circle, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Pinkney Augustus and Alta Sophronia Foster Bridges. She was a homemaker and a member of Buffalo Baptist Church in South Carolina.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Logan Webber; a son, Gene Webber; a brother, J.B. Bridges; and a son-in-law, James Eubanks.
She is survived by a daughter, Sara Eubanks of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Rachel Webber of Shelby; five granddaughters and two grandsons-in-law, Wanda Webber, Staci Webber, Amy Jo and Mark Calvert, Lynn and Doug Bridges, all of Shelby, and Lou Ann Hood of Kernersville; and four great-grandchildren, Josh Bridges, Hannah and Ethan Hood, and Logan Calvert.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Marshall Foster officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Evelyn Owens
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Evelyn Reynolds Owens, 82, of 200 Fulton Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Robert Haynes and Mitchell Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home.

Charles Hardin
FOREST CITY - Mr. Charles Ray Hardin, 68, of 152 Wilson Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Henderson Care Center.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Padgett and King Mortuary with Dr. Bobby Gantt and the Rev. Steve Hardin officiating. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the chapel.

Jean Hendrick
ASHEVILLE - Mrs. Jean D. Hendrick, 74, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Everette and Ada Godfrey Dockery.
In Shelby she belonged to First Baptist Church, where she was a WMU leader. She retired with 30 years of service from Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Shelby. She also worked with Hospice. She moved to Asheville in 1989 and joined West Asheville Baptist Church, Women's Aglow, and was chairwoman of the Homebound of WAB.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Dockery.
She is survived by her husband, Ford Hendrick; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Gary Haaby of Townsend, Tenn.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Drew and Karen Hendrick of Charlottesville, Va., and Mark Hendrick of the home; a brother, Sonny Dockery of Easley, S.C.; and five grandchildren and a grandson-in-law, Kim and Preston Waller, Erick Haaby, and Andrew, Madeline and Bryan Hendrick.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Lewis officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park at Shelby.
The family will receive friends Saturday at West Asheville Baptist Church immediately following the service before leaving for Shelby.
Memorials may be made to West Asheville Baptist Church Building Fund, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28086.

Glenn Crawford
NEWTON - Mr. Glenn Crawford, 82, of 820 Hamilton St., died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Brian Center East in Hickory.
Mr. Crawford was the father of Sheriff Dan G. Crawford of Cleveland County.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
Charles Wright
SHELBY - Mr. Charles L. Wright, 71, of 2929 Nicole Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
Born in Burke County, he was the son of the late Eugene James and Viola Smith Wright. He was a self-employed painting contractor. He served in the Navy and Army, and he was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Blacksburg, S.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Wright; and two brothers, Tom Williams and Ervin Williams.
He is survived by his second wife, Mary Futch Wright of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles L. II and Sandra Wright of Lawndale and Calvin and Kay Wright of Shelby; three stepdaughters, Ingaborg W. Sisk of Sumter, S.C., Brenda Sue Rape of Blacksburg and Betty Smith of Landrum, S.C.; a stepson, Ronald Gene Grigg of Shelby; two brothers, Bob Williams of Orlando, Fla., and Dwight Wright of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Katherine Crow and Evelyn Wright, both of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Revs. Jamie Ellis and Mickey Heyward officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Joseph Howell
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Joseph E. Howell, 89, of 203 W. Ridge St., died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Dr. Steven Akers officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

'Papa' Jackson
EDGEMORE, S.C. - Mr. Abe "Papa" Jackson, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon AME Zion Church in Chester County. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

George Fortenberry
GROVER - Mr. George Mills Fortenberry, 88, of 149 Byron Place, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late W.H. and Bessie White Fortenberry. He was retired from Minette Mills in Grover where he worked for 26 years, and he was a retired farmer. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby and was a member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 621/2 years, Sudie Dixon Fortenberry; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Hilda Fortenberry of Shelby, Carl and Faye Fortenberry of Clarksville, Tenn., and Harry and Debbie Fortenberry of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Gene Rollins of Shelby, Linda and Edward Wright and Glenda and Lawrence Simpson, all of Grover; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Revs. Randy Clark and Tim Lowery officiating. Burial will be in Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Lawrence Simpson, 117 Bumble Bee Road, Grover.
Helen Edwards
SHELBY - Mrs. Helen Ledford Edwards, 75, of Shelby Manor Assisted Living, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Missis-sippi, she was the daughter of the late Barney Sailors and Sue Wright Sailors Causby and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harland Ledford; her second husband, C.B. Edwards; a son, Billy Joe Ledford; and a brother, Claude Sailors.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronny and Carolyn Ledford of Kings Mountain and Mike and Laura Ledford of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ann and James Swink of Spartanburg, S.C., and Lisa and James "Junebug" Harrelson of Kings Mountain; eight grandchildren, Janet McDaniel, Ronny Ledford Jr., Connie Hunt, Danny Hunt Jr., Tommy Harrelson, Timothy Harrelson, Mandy Stickel and Joey Ledford; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Revs. Tim Hendrick and David Turner officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and James "Junebug" Harrelson, 118 Fox Fire Lane, Kings Mountain.
Bill Lazenby
SHELBY - Mr. Bill Lazenby, 75, of 124 Delmar Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaston County, he was the son of the late William Arthur and Esther Beauchamp Lazenby. He retired from Life Insurance Co. of Virginia as district manager. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he was the choir director, elder of the church and Sunday school teacher. He served in the Navy, participating in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Griffin Lazenby.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanie and Larry Benton of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cathy Lazenby of Shelby; two grandchildren, Christopher Mark Lazenby of Louisville, Ky., and Julie Ruff and her husband, Tommy, of Shelby; a great-grandson, Zachary Ruff of Shelby.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Rice and Ted Easter officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, 115 North Shores Drive, Cherryville.

Margaret Ponder
GROVER - Mrs. Margaret Horton Ponder, 83, of 111 Keel Court, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Sharon, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Buren Haskel and Macie Jane Sherer Horton. She retired from Jones & Honeycutt Insurance as a secretary and she also worked in the Bi-Lo deli. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Blanton Ponder; a sister, Annelle Horton; and a half brother, Hugh Robinson.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Rose and Wally Kresley of Concord, Calif., and Marie P. Free of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Ben H. and Elizabeth Horton of Boone; four grandchildren, Terrie Lankford, Sherrie Ledbetter, Brian Curry and Tracy Curry; three great-grandchildren, Jayson Lankford, Jerrod Lankford and Tanna Curry.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Robin Kingston officiating. Burial will be in Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
