Genelia McSwain
SHELBY - Mrs. Genelia Wright McSwain, 83, of 1179 Dalton St., Shelby, formerly of Fallston, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
Born March 22, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Ava Phillip and Linnie Emmaline Leonhardt Wright. She retired from Barnette's Restaurant. She was a lifetime member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Noah Wright Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Hillard "Slim" McSwain; a son, Carroll McSwain; two brothers, Thomas Wright and Edgar Wright; and a sister, Alice Wright.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Judy McSwain of Shelby and Mike and Carol McSwain of Fallston; a daughter and son-in-law, Gay and Keith Anthony of Kings Mountain; a daughter-in-law, Pat McSwain of Shelby; two brothers, C.C. Wright of Gaffney, S.C., and Lester Wright of Gastonia; two sisters, Kimmie Durbin of Fallston and Clara Beattie of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Kathy McSwain, David and Rhonda McSwain, Shannon McSwain, Kelly and Eric Peeler, Amanda and Ray Austin, Adam McSwain, Greg and Sherry Anthony, Jena Grigg and Katie Anthony.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Eddie Ingram officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston. At other times, the family will be at the home of Harold and Judy McSwain, 1520 Barbee Road, Shelby.
Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church building fund, P.O. Box 219, Fallston, NC 28042.

'Pat' Houser
SHELBY - Mrs. Pansy "Pat" Josephine Witherspoon Pharr Houser, 94, of Alterra Sterling House, formerly of Elm Street, Cherryville, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at her home.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Billy Lowe officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to St. Johns Lutheran Church, 310 W. Church St., Cherryville, NC 28021; or to First Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Academy St., Cherryville, NC 28021.
Arrangements are by Carpenters Funeral Home, Cherryville.

Buddy Davis
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Buddy Dean Davis, 49, of 1412 Colony Park Drive, Johnson City, Tenn., died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Hershel Sr. and Carrie Palls Davis. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Newton and was a former employee of Duke Fluor-Daniel Co. in Charlotte. He served in the Navy during the Vietname War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Donnie Davis Morehead.
He is survived by a daughter, Carrie Davis of Concord; a son, Travis McKay of Belmont; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Hershel Jr. and Teal Davis of Kings Mountain, Roger and Jackie Davis of Belmont and Chester and Sandra Davis of Gastonia; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Aileen and Charles Doty of Newton, Catherine and Rick Gibson of Shelby and Shirley Harrelson Davis of Kings Mountain; and nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dean Coffey and Pastor Claudia Harrelson officiating. Burial will be in Westview Gardens in Bessemer City.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Shirley Davis at 813 Oak Grove Road in Kings Mountain.

Betty Adams
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Betty Louise Hunt Adams, 70, formerly of 1116 Buffalo St. in Shelby, died Wednes-day, Feb. 13, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Margaret Oglesby Hunt and the late Thomas W. Hunt. She was a member of Good Samaritan Fellowship Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Garrett Hunt of Durham, Ricky Adams of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Michael and Pricilla Adams of Shelby; four daughters and a son-in-law, Debra Adams of Charlotte, Linda Adams and Glenda Adams, both of Shelby, and Brenda and Willie Grinyard of Gastonia; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles and Zaddie Hunt of Cleveland, Herbert Hunt of Syracuse N.Y., and Gilbert Hunt of Shelby; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Margaret and Eugene Young of Belmont, Audrey Sanders of Shelby and Vernell Brown of Kings Mountain; 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Church with the Rev. R.E. Devoe officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the 807 Tenda St., Shelby.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Peak
SHELBY - Ms. Mary Madeline Peak, 65, of 2318 China Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced by Enloe Mortuary.

'Bob' Rust
CHERRYVILLE - Robert "Bob" Hoke Rust, 76, of 3281 N.C. 274 N., died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in Winston-Salem.
A graveside service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Key officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 4 to 5 p.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home in Cherryville.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100 C.S. Strafford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Howard Whitaker
SHELBY - Mr. Howard Vernon Whitaker, 76, of 1331 Mooresboro Road, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late George Stowe and Lee Ola Grigg Whitaker. He was a co-founder and owner of Cleveland Floor Covering Co. He was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Training Union director, a member of the choir and the male chorus. He was a graduate of Mooresboro High School. He served in Company L of the 34th Infantry Division of the Army in World War II and was engaged in combat in the Philippines. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Japan Occupation Medal, among numerous other awards. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Shull Whitaker; and a sister, Luna Whitaker.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Parker Whitaker; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley V. and Cynthia Whitaker of Rutherfordton and Evans P. and Diane Whitaker of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Vaughn Whitaker of Shelby; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ostine Green, Ruby and P.D. Biddix and Blanche and Hoyle Davis, all of Shelby; five sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ever Whitaker of Shelby, J.E. and Prue Yelton of Bostic, Stephen and Carolyn Parker of Lincolnton, Billy and Grace Williams of Shelby and B.H. Jr. and Betty Jo Parker of Rutherfordton; three grandchildren, Elisha Whitaker of Boone and Donald Whitaker and Julie Wolf, both of Shelby; two great-grandsons, Madison Whitaker and Noah Whitaker; and 19 nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with Dr. Don McSwain officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park with military honors.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Clevie Roberson
BOSTIC - Mr. Clevie Dee Roberson, 41, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at home.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Washburn and Dorsey Funeral Home.

Wilma Vickers
ELLENBORO - Miss Wilma Vickers, 79, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Caroleen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial will be Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Daisy Wise
DALTON, Ga. - Mrs. Daisy Lee Poston Wise, formerly of Shelby, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Hamilton Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late Mary Beam and John R. Poston.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kennon Forrest Wise; three sisters, Ruby Stamey, Helen Hoyle and Bessie Eskridge; and three brothers, Fibra Poston, Atkin Poston and Herman Poston.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Jean Wise of Dalton; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Greg Conner of Elizabethtown; grandchildren, Tyna Wise, Barron Wise, Michael Wise and Mary Wise, all of Dalton, and Kelly Conner, Christy Conner and Jennifer Conner, all of Raleigh; great-grandchildren, Henry Stevenson, Jackson Stevenson and Elizabeth Ann Wise, all of Dalton; a brother-in-law, Hubert Hoyle of Shelby; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby with the Rev. David Lohr officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Shelby.

Evelyn Faulkner
SHELBY - Mrs. Evelyn Speas Faulkner, 91, of 6032 Maple Valley Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rural Hall, she was a retired school teacher and had taught at Asheville, Winston-Salem and Charlotte schools and had majored in business. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, a graduate of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., and founder of Carolina Business School in Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Augustus and Georgianna Speas, and her husband, William Sanford Faulkner Jr.
She is survived by a son, retired Lt. Col. Sanford "Sandy" Wesley Faulkner of the home; a granddaughter, Kristen McSwain of Shelby; and a grandson, Ryan Faulkner of Colorado Springs, Colo.
A private service will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the home today from 4 to 6 p.m. and can be reached at (704) 481-8722.

Floyd Detter
GASTONIA - Mr. Floyd William Detter, 60, of 812 Evening Shade Lane, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematory with the Revs. Gene Ware and Tim Setzer officiating. Burial will be at Olney Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
