CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Alice "Benny" Hammitt, 81, of Cardinal Care Center in Lincolnton, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Cardinal Care Center.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.
Ella Mae Groves
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Ella Mae Groves, 90, of 206 Park Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Eugene Land officiating.
The family will receive friend tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Funeral Fund in care of Virginia P. Gower, 309 N. Carpenter St., Kings Mountain, NC 28086; or to Activities Department of White Oak Manor, 716 Sipes St., Kings Mountain, NC 28086.
Reba Holland
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Reba Street Holland, 77, of 109 Vine St., died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Rev. Ladell Humphries officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
Boyce Morrow
FOREST CITY - Mr. Boyce Lee Morrow, 77, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forest City Missionary Methodist Church in Alexander Mills with the Rev. Richard Prendergrast officiating. Burial will be in the Morrow Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.
'Pat' Baker
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Patricia "Pat" Davis Baker, 65, of 2200 Rice Planter Road, formerly of Hoyle Street, Cherryville, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter's Funeral Home, Cherryville, with the Rev. Albert Johnston officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at 305 N. Hoyle St., Cherryville.
Lillie Fain
SHELBY - Mrs. Lillie Gillespie Fain, 83, of 1500 N. Post Road, formerly of China Grove, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1918, in Sevierville, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Margaret Vaughn Gillespie. She attended Sevierville Schools and was retired from Rowan County Food Service, having worked at Bostian School cafeteria. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was formerly of Landis Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and member of Lois Rutledge Circle and formerly of Central Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Carey Gillespie.
She is survived by a son, Robert M. Fain of Shelby; a daughter, Judith F. Christy of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at noon at Central Baptist Church with the Revs. Curtis Parker and Neal Efird officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home of China Grove is in charge of arrangements.
Amos McCluney Sr.
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Deacon Amos Benjamin McCluney Sr., 97, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Spartanburg, S.C.
He was a son of the late Deacon Alex and Hannah McCluney. He grew up in Union and was a retired soybean farmer. He was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church of Shelby and served as a deacon, superintendent of Sunday school for 30 years, Bible school teacher, choir leader and composer.
He is survived by a son, Amos E. McCluney a representative legislator for the State of Delaware of Wilmington; three daughters, Evangelist Essie B. Cunningham of Lincolnton, Evangelist Roselle Whitener of Baltimore and Queen Esther Downing-Hairston of Hempstead, N.Y.; a brother, the Rev. Timothy H. McCluney Sr. of Blacksburg, S.C.; two sisters, Beaudell Ponder and Vera Dawkins, both of Shelby; 28 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Isaac, Walter B. Ellis, Willie A. Maddox, Lottie C. Howell and Samuel Whitener officiating. The body will be placed in the church two hours before service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 833 Hardy St., Shelby.

Berry Bristol
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Berry Bernard Bristol, 46, of 115 Pat Drive House No. 2, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002.
The funeral will be Sunday at B.N. Barnes Auditorium of Kings Mountain Senior High School at 3 p.m. The body will be placed in the auditorium one hour before the service. The family will receive friends at the home and at the home of his sister, Sabrea Shaw, 906 N. Morris St., off Davidson Avenue in Gastonia. Withrow's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
'Lean' Peak
SHELBY - Ms. Mary Madeline "Lean" Peak, 65, of 2318 China Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late William and Gertrude Phelps Peak. She was retired from Cleveland Regional Medical Center, where she was a nurse's assistant for 19 years. She was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an honorary member of the Zeno T. Borders Mass Choir and a member of the Senior Missionary Circle. She started the Clothes Closet for the Faith Baptist Church Community Development Center. She was also a charter member of the Good Samaritan Club and the Ever Ready Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Peak Jr.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Andre and Quiency McCluney of Shelby and Tanya Cottrell of the home; a son, Antonio Peak of the home; another son, Charles Staten of Shelby; six sisters and five brothers-in-law, Geneva and Ralph Marshall of Baltimore, Ethel and Samuel Lockhart of Shelby, Carolyn Perry of Shelby, Dorris and Johnny Morris of Baltimore, Betty and James Bell and Sandra and Jerry Beasley, all of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Retha Peak and Theodore and Katie Hart, all of Shelby; five grandchildren, Latresia, Mia, Jaslin, Tia and Toni; and an aunt and uncle, Nora and James Saddler of Blacksburg, S.C.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Faith Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Z.T. Borders officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

'Eck' Pruitt
MAIDEN - Mr. Eskridge "Eck" Pruitt, 81, formerly of 2955 Water Plant Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Cardinal Health Care in Lincolnton.
Born Feb. 16, 1921, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late John and Mary Smith Pruitt. He was a veteran of the Army having served in World War II. He was a retired supervisor with Catawba Valley Machinery and most of his life worked as a general contractor.
In addition to parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Shuford Pruitt.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Donna Pruitt of Maiden; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna P. and Lath Harris of Sumter, S.C., and Sheila P. Edwards of Hickory; three sisters; one brother; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Plateau United Methodist Church in Vale with the Rev. Paul McClure officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home, Newton.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Stanley S. Greene Sr., 56, of 543 Wagy Road, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at home.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at St. John AME Zion Church in Rutherfordton with the Rev. James A. McDougald officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service at the church.
Burial will be Sunset Memorial Park.

'Tony' Hicks
ANDERSON, S.C. - Mr. William Anthony "Tony" Hicks, 55, of 4007 Weatherstone Way, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born March 19, 1946, in Shelby, he was a son of the late Harmon Guilford and Gaynell Duncan Hicks. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was an engineer with Michelin Tire Manufacturing and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon and elder for a number of years. He also taught the Koinonia Sunday School Class and the Men's Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Morehead Hicks of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Troy Clayton and Janis Hicks of Whidbey Island, Wash., and Lee Morehead Hicks of Greenville, S.C., and his fiancée, Sheila Woods.
The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church with Dr. David J. Bailey officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, and at other times at the home.
