Samuel Grier Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. Samuel E. Grier Sr., 89, of 500 Bonny St., died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Rev. Jackson and Mattie Grier. He was a retired self-employed landscaper for over 40 years. He was a member of St. Paul FPH Church of God in Lawndale and chairman of the deacon board.
He is survived by his wife, Ovilla Grier; a son, Samuel L. Grier Jr. of Passaic, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Cooper and E. Francis Adams, both of Shelby; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Faith Harvest Church. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
Dockery's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pauline Putnam
Myrtle Beach - Mrs. Effie Pauline Wright Putnam, 80, of 1109 N. Kings Highway, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Myrtle Beach Manor.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.
Harold Brooks
ELLENBORO - Mr. Harold F. Brooks, 75, of N.C. 74 Business East, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Rev. B.B. and Sufronia Campfield Brooks. He was retired from Burlington Industries, J.C. Cowan Plant. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Campfield Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a trustee, was Sunday school director and a Sunday school teacher, chairman of the house and grounds committee, chairman of the cemetery committee and was a member of the choir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Graham Brooks and J.B. Brooks.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Curtis Brooks of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Max Wilson of Ellenboro and Debbie and Sam Lee of Lawndale; two brothers, John Brooks and Claude Brooks, both of Ellenboro; three sisters, Louise Teseneer of Taylors, S.C., Edith E. Dodson of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Mary Lee Costner of Ellenboro; four grandchildren, Kathy L. Wilson, Jennifer and Preston Allen, Brooklyn Lee and Dylan Lee; and a great-grandchild, Conner Lela Kring.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Joseph Cantrell and Eugene Passmore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Maggie Everett
SHELBY - Mrs. Maggie Elizabeth Everett, formerly of Lattimore, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at White Oak Manor.
She was a daughter of the late Willis Henry and Anna Laura Kilgore Brown. She was a homemaker, a member of Lattimore Baptist Church, and a member of the Maggie Beam Sunday school class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Pharr Everett Sr.; and eight brothers and sisters.
She is survived by three half sisters, Daisy Brown of Rockwell, Virginia McWhirter of Shelby and Shirley Brown of Salisbury; a half brother, Willis Henry of Ellenboro; three sons, Leonard W. Everett of Shelby, Paul Everett Jr. of Mooresboro and Dennis Everett of Charlotte; three daughters, Virginia L. Lookadoo of Charlotte, Mary Ann Curtis of San Diego, Calif., and Kathy Irene Rhyne of Lancaster, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lattimore Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Edwards officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.
Lola Pyatt
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Lola Kay Williams Pyatt, 51, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Golden Harvest Retirement Home.
A memorial service will be today at 1 p.m. at Souls Harbor Tabernacle Church in Mooresboro with the Rev. Chuck Poole officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Harrelson Funeral Home of Caroleen is in charge of arrangements.
'Jim' Curry
SHELBY - Mr. James "Jim" E. Curry, 76, of 715 Dellinger Road, Apt. 214, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Robert Stewart and Hattie Mae Turner Curry. He was retired from Dixon Tire Service as a tire salesman. He was a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church and former member of Mulls Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the choir. He was a former Shelby Midget race car driver and member of Shelby Life Saving and Rescue for 13 years. He served in the Navy as a gunner's mate on the USS Missouri, on which the Japanese surrendered to end World War II while anchored in Tokoyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Mae Jewell Woods Curry.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Steve and Linda Curry of Shelby and James Reginald and Pam Curry of Forest City; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Gail and David "Joe" Hamrick of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leroy and Mogree Curry of Cummings, Ga., and Doyle and Norma Curry of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bill Ward of Shelby; an uncle and aunt, Woodrow and Artie Mae Turney of Cherryville; two grandchildren, Michael Wilkins of Shelby and Rylan Curry of Forest City; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Leigh Wilkins and Rachel Lynn Wilkins, both of Shelby; and a special friend, Wanda Estioko of Shelby.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Revs. Neal Efird and Tim Lee officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home.

Mansfield Porter
SHELBY - Mr. Mansfield Sonny Porter, 71, of 1219 Masonic Drive died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Rev. Otis Giles
CHERRYVILLE - Rev. Otis Giles, 69, of 521 Bond St., died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home of Kings Mountain.
Charles King Sr.
HICKORY - Mr. Charles Winford King Sr., 66, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Born July 25, 1935, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Lucy Connor and Ray King of Catawba County. He was a graduate of Ridgeview High School and served briefly with the Navy. He was a retired employee of E.R. Carpenter Inc. in Conover, where he worked 21 years. He was a member of Morning Star First Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the Layman League, and the transportation committee, was a deacon assistant, and a member of the church Sunday school.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Williams King of the home; two daughters, Sherry King Dula of Claremont and Leslie Diane King of the home; two sons, Charles W. King Jr. of Conover and Ronald Christopher King of Charlotte; a son-in-law, Melvin F. Dula Sr. of Claremont; a daughter-in-law, Michelle A. King of Conover; six grandchildren; two brothers, Willie L. King Sr. of Conover and Garfield King of Westminster, S.C.; a sister, Havanna King of Hickory; an uncle, Weddie Gabriel Sr. of Sherrills Ford; and a number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Morning Star First Baptist Church with the Rev. Webster E. Lytle officiating. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Harold Thrift
SHELBY - Mr. Harold Columbus Thrift, 54, of 32 Heritage Lane, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Hospice of Wendover in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, he was maintenance supervisor at Cleveland Mills and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served in the Army and retired from the N.C. National Guard Unit in Gastonia.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki Armstrong Thrift of the home; his parents, William and Geneva Wiggins Thrift of Kings Mountain; a brother, Robert Thrift of Kings Mountain; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Nelson Quick of Belmont, Gail and Jimmy Hooks of Kings Mountain and Carolyn and Doug Heavner of Gastonia.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church with Monsignor Eric Houseknecht officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his parents, 518 Stoney Point Road, Kings Mountain.
