'Nita' Willis
SHELBY - Ms. Juanita "Nita" Hazel Willis, 58, of 2260 Taylor Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Maxine Willis Wright of the home and the late Threet Willis. She was a homemaker and was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and a member of Love-Joy Sunday School Class. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Kay Ingle Thompson; a son, Phillip Ingle; and a sister, Patty Ruth Rippy. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her former husband, "C.F." Ingle; a son, Charles Ingle of Vale; a brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Kerry Willis of Boston; six grandchildren, Maggie Thompson, Lacey Thompson, Ashley Ingle, Katie Ingle, Charles Ingle and Casey Ingle; one great-grandchild, Kristina Ingle. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Jordan officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Pauline Putnam
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mrs. Effie Pauline Wright Putnam, 80, of 1109 N. Kings Highway, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Myrtle Beach Manor. Born April 2, 1921, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Wesley and Mary Fannie Huffstetler Wright. She was retired from Cabarrus County school system as a guidance counselor. She was an honorary colonel in the Air Force ROTC and a graduate of Western Carolina Teachers College and of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Monroe Wright. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sherry Putnam of Myrtle Beach; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Harvey Carpenter of Kings Mountain; a stepgranddaughter, Rebecca Nokes of Smyrna, Tenn.; a stepgrandson, Billy McKinney of Sparta, Tenn.; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Rachael Lynn Webb and Lee Webb. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston with the Rev. Scott Norton officiating. Burial will be in Mary's Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Ray Dean Carpenter and E.A. Bingham, both of Kings Mountain, Eugene Grigg and Norris Howell, both of Cherryville, Donald Huffstetler of Fallston, Wayne D. Aldridge of Fort Mill, S.C., and honorary pallbearer, William A. McKinney III of Sparta. The family received friends Wednesday at the funeral home. SHELBY - Mrs. Lila B. Howell, 80, of 706 Parkview St., died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Fanny Humphries Barrett. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Winfred F. Howell. She is survived by a son an daughter-in-law, Frank and Allyson Howell of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Howell and Larry Wright of Shelby; two sisters, Gladys Duncan of Shelby and Mildred Smawley of Portsmouth, Va.; six grandchildren, David Wright and his wife, Julie, of Lincolnton, Kenneth Howell Jr., Robyn Howell-Mauney and her husband, Art Mauney, Kellie Wright Shelton, Tripp Howell and Matthew Howell, all of Shelby; nine great-grandchildren, Justin Short, Lyndsie Shelton, Josh Shelton, Hillary Wright, Jordan Shelton, Trace Mauney, Marti Wright, Avery Mauney and Max Mauney. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Arnold officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. SHELBY - Mrs. Beatrice Euleen Borders Eaves, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Christian Fellowship Church of God with the pastor, Lizzie Poston, and the Rev. Hoover Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Hazel Newman Gardo, 71, of 170 Forest Hills Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002. A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Padgett & King Mortuary. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Folk Memorial Gardens in Columbus.

SPINDALE - Mrs. Kate L. Dickerson, 100, of 208 Ledbetter Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital, Rutherfordton. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City.
Truman Smith
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Truman Grady Smith, 81, of 401 W. Academy St., died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
Born July 22, 1920, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Grady and Vangie Lee Hamrick Smith. He was retired from Lowe's Hardware as shop foreman and was also a farmer. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Waco Fire Department, where he served as a former chief. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ina LaRue Hoyle Smith; and a sister, Mildred Smith.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Dorothy Smith of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Ralph Gibson of Waco; four grandchildren and their spouses, Wayne and Anita Smith of Claremont, Greg and Michelle Gibson of Maiden, Doug and Angela Smith of Shelby and Kim and Jamie McSwain of Waco; and seven great-grandchildren, Loren McSwain, Holden McSwain, Baylen Smith, Isaac Smith, Kayla Gibson, Kari Gibson and Valerie Smith.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Claudia Harrelson officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.

Breanna Byers
SHELBY - Breanna Marie Byers, 6-week-old child of Dwayne and Amy Blanton Byers, of 3400-3 Fallston Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born Jan. 20, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Deborah Ann Black.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Joey Byers and Caleb Byers of the home; a sister, Katie Byers of the home; a maternal grandmother, Teresa Greene of Shelby; a maternal grandfather, Roy Blanton of Sarasota, Fla.; a paternal grandfather, Steve Byers of Grover; a great-grandfather, Hoyle Byers of Shelby; a great-grandmother, Lucille Greene of Shelby; an aunt, LeAnn Owens of Shelby; a godmother, Kimberly Putnam of Shelby; and friends Samantha Anthony and Jackie Black of Shelby.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Buchanan officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

SHELBY - Mrs. Beatrice Euleen Borders Eaves, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
