Ralph Baxter
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Leon Ralph Baxter, 88, of 3073 Sorrells Baxter Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Lincoln Nursing Center. Born Nov. 10, 1913, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late J. Henry and Sallie Boyles Baxter. He was a retired self-employed farmer and member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church. He served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded five bronze stars for five major campaigns (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe). He was among the forces that liberated Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He was a former member of the Lincoln County Board of Education and former County Committee Chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Stein and Mike Harrill officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Love Memorial School, Relay for Life Team, 1463 Love Memorial School Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092; or Bess Chapel United Methodist Church in care of John Stein, 2741 N.C. 274, Cherryville, NC 28021.

SHELBY - Mrs. Olive May Weaver Shelly, 85, of Carillon Assisted Living, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Fannie Bumgardner
POLKVILLE - Mrs. Fannie Lee Queen Bumgardner, 78, of 2406 W. Stage-coach Trail, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby. Born April 2, 1923, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Mae Queen Arrowood. She was homemaker and a member of Polkville Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Harland Bumgardner; a stepson, Lee Roy Bumgardner; and a brother, Clyde Hipps. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerry and Judy Bumgardner and Ronald "Ronnie" Bumgardner, all of Polkville; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Eugene and Jean Bumgarnder of Golden Valley; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Brenda and Dean Bridges and Judy and Charles Gettys, all of Polkville, and Gail Bumgardner of Monroe; two stepdaughters, Kathleen Hipps of Hollis and Mary Sue Terry of Polkville; a stepdaughter-in-law, Ethel Bumgardner Pedersen of Polkville; a brother, Jim Hipps of Cloverdale, Ind.; three sisters, Nettie Waller of Bridgeton, N.J., Mattie Edwards of Shelby and Emma Bumgardner of Duncans Creek; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; 31 stepgreat-grandchildren; and 11 stepgreat-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Polkville Baptist Church with the Revs. Alton Martin, Floyd Bottoms and Jack Waters officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home. Virginia Self
CASAR - Mrs. Virginia White Self, 78. formerly of Casar, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Alterra Sterling House of Shelby. Born Nov. 13, 1923, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Curtis and Dovie Roxanne Costner White. She was retired from Broughton Hospital, Morganton, as assistant supervisor of the sewing room. She was a member of Clover Hill United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Casar Home Demonstration Club and a member of the Retired N.C. State Employees Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lee Self; two brothers, Theodore White and Woodrow White; three sisters, Thelma Tillman, Irene Downs and Joann Short. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jerry and Carolyn Self of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Larry Dixon of Shelby and Linda and Ray Hull of Casar; a brother, Paul White of Casar; three sisters, Edith Price of Rock Hill, S.C., Jewel Logan of Chester, S.C., and Polly Downs of Icard; a grandson and his wife, Tim and Suzanne Hull of Casar; three granddaughters and their husbands, Debra and Jimmy Wilson of Shelby, Cynthia and Rob Adcock of Indian Trail and Laura and Glen Ruby of Mooresville; five great-grandchildren, Lindsey Hull, Dustin Hull, Alex Wilson, Jenna Wilson and Lee Wilson; two stepgrandsons, David Dixon of Salisbury and Christopher Dixon of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; two stepgranddaughters, Rebecca Mehl of Milwaukee and Cheri Baier of La Mirada, Calif.; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Clover Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ed Lee and Russell Fitts and Dr. Randy Bridges officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. SHELBY - Mrs. Lila B. Howell, 80, of 706 Parkview St., died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Fanny Humphries Barrett. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Winfred F. Howell; and a son, Kenneth R. Howell Sr. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Allyson Howell of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Howell and Larry Wright of Shelby; two sisters, Gladys Duncan of Shelby and Mildred Smawley of Portsmouth, Va.; six grandchildren, David Wright and his wife, Julie, of Lincolnton, Kenneth Howell Jr., Robyn Howell-Mauney and her husband, Art Mauney, Kellie Wright Shelton, Tripp Howell and Matthew Howell, all of Shelby; nine great-grandchildren, Justin Short, Lyndsie Shelton, Josh Shelton, Hillary Wright, Jordan Shelton, Trace Mauney, Marti Wright, Avery Mauney and Max Mauney. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawton Neely officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Martha Wright, 2906 Elizabeth Ave., Shelby. BESSEMER CITY - Mrs. Callie Mae Davis Wyont, 83, of 509 Old N.C. 277 Highway, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Brian Center in Lincolnton. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Puett United Methodist Church with Alan Vanmeter and Rev. Larry Rowell officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenter's Funeral Home in Cherryville. SPINDALE - Mrs. Kate L. Dickerson, 100, of 208 Ledbetter Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Brown officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City is in charge of arrangements.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Albert Lee Brackett, 69, of 909 Grace St., died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. John Bridges officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home.

John Tinkler
CLIFFSIDE - Mr. John Tinkler, 95, of Highway 221-A, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Greenwood County, S.C., he was a son of the late Daniel F. and Susie Vines Tinkler. He was a graduate of Erskine College, He taught math at Cliffside School before joining the payroll and cost accounting department at Cone Mills, where he retired. He served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines. He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Cliffside United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Kelly Tinkler of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, John Bruce and Linda Tinkler of Asheboro; a granddaughter, Kelly and her husband, Curtis Shipley of Charlotte. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Revs. Anthony Moore, Morris Byers and Ben Steele officiating. A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery in Seneca, S.C. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Cliffside United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 295, Cliffside, NC 28024.

'Peggy' Cox
SHELBY - Mrs. Elizabeth "Peggy" Daniels Cox, 93, of 1176 Wyke Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Century Care Center in Shelby. Born in Morgan County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nancy Maude Hester Daniels. She was a retired bookkeeper for Kester Furniture and Charles Store. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She resided at Shelby Manor for the last five and a half years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace T. Cox; four brothers, William Reese, James Melvin, Romayne and Sylvanus "Dan"; five sisters, Cleo Daniels, Mary Lou D. Harris, Nancy Maude Daniels, Martha A. Daniels; and twin sister, Lena Belle Daniels. She is survived by her special friend and caregiver, Marietta Floyd of Shelby. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. John Boggs and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 E. Marion St., Shelby, NC 28150 or to LIVE Agency, 1266 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Aimee Losse
SHELBY - Mrs. Aimee Schultz Losse, 83, of 2825 Elizabeth Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born April 24, 1918, in Milwaukee, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Elise Kratzat Schultz. She moved to Shelby from Joplin, Mo., in 1967, when her husband was assigned to the local PPG plant. She was an active member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, where she volunteered in the church Meals Program, the Homework Club and was secretary of the Presbyterian Women. She taught math at Piedmont Community College in Charlotte and was a Discovery Place volunteer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Paul L. Losse, who died in 1997. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Helen Losse of Winston-Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jennings Cline of Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Troy and Victor Losse of Winston-Salem, Gabrielle Cline-Snell and her husband, Jeff Snell, of Knoxville, and Lisa Cline of Madison, Wis. A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the prayer room of the church. Memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church, 226 E. Graham St., Shelby, NC 28151. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel of Winston-Salem is in charge of arrangements.

'Nita' Willis
SHELBY - Ms. Juanita "Nita" Hazel Willis, 58, of 2260 Taylor Road, formerly of Vale, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Maxine Wright Willis of the home and the late Threet Willis. She was a homemaker and was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and a member of Love-Joy Sunday school class. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Kay Ingle Thompson; a son, Phillip Ingle; and a sister, Patty Ruth Rippy. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her former husband, "C.F." Ingle; a son, Charles Ingle of Vale; a brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Kerry Willis of Boston; six grandchildren, Maggie Thompson, Lacey Thompson, Ashley Ingle, Katie Ingle, Charles Ingle and Casey Ingle; one great-grandchild, Kristina Ingle. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Jordan officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family received friends Thursday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Mollie Anthony
SHELBY - Mrs. Mollie Guffey Anthony, 90, of 164 Houston St., Mount Holly, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. She was a daughter of the late N.P. Sr. and Margaret Sparks Guffey. She was a mother, homemaker, and retired from Crawley Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Mount Holly and a former member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 35 years, sang in the adult choir, and belonged to W.M.U. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon Anthony; two brothers, Raleigh Guffey and Gail Guffey; two sisters, Myrtle Davis and Katie Lou McSwain. She is survived by a son, Forrest "Sparkie" Anthony of Georgetown, S.C.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Lou Humphries of Shelby and Patricia Pearson and Jerry Fish of Maiden; a brother, N.P. Guffey Jr. of Boiling Springs; a sister, Betty Jolley of Cliffside; four grandchildren, Todd Anthony of Cleveland, N.C., Debbie Anthony Hayes of Cooleemee, Donna H. Wellmon of Shelby and Michelle P. Greene of Raleigh; eight great-grandchildren, Alina Greene of Raleigh, Angie Deaton, Dannika Hayes, D.J. Hayes all of Cooleemee, Phillip Deaton of Kings Mountain, Crystal Anthony, Todd Anthony Jr. and Stacie Anthony, all of Cleveland; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Kelly Anthony of Cleveland; and two great-great-grandsons of Kings Mountain. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home with the Revs. Ed Sessom and Keith Dixon officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Flint Hill Baptist Church building fund.

Beatrice Eaves
SHELBY - Mrs. Beatrice Eulene Borders Eaves, 77, of 823 Buffalo St., died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Cluster and Katie Poston Borders. She resided in Gastonia for many years and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Matthew F.B.H. Church and was an ordained minister. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Odell Eaves, and a son, Willie James Eaves. She is survived by a sister, Celeste B. Mitchem of the home; four granddaughters, Darlene Young, Twana Eaves, Stephanie Eaves and Tuffy Eaves all of Charlotte; two grandsons, Vance E. Eaves and Marvin G. Eaves both of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Carrie Y. Eaves of Charlotte; three sisters-in-law, Emma Robbs Eaves of Shelby, Anna Mae Eaves and Inez Eaves, both of Gastonia; 11 great-grandchildren; a niece, Lola M. Thompson of Shelby; relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Christian Fellowship Church of God with Pastor Lizzie Poston and the Rev. Hoover Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:00 at the church on Saturday. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
