MOORESBORO - Mr. Larry S. Gentry, 40, of 106 Random Drive, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of George W. Gentry and Mrs. Jeanette Thompson Gentry of Mooresboro. He was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church and was employed at Cone Mills of Cliffside. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Yvonne Walton Gentry of Mooresboro; five sons, Chas C. Rice and Jonathan M. Walton of the home, Curtis O. Rice, Chadwick W. Gentry and Larry O. Gentry of Mooresboro; a stepdaughter, Ms. Sierra Walton of Mooresboro; two brothers, Ernie D. Gentry of Shelby and Craig Gentry of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Ms. Geneva Gentry of Grover, Mrs. Georgina G. Hopper of Shelby, Mrs. Lula G. Patterson of Earl and Mrs. Regina G. Smith of Forest City. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Dover officiating. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Foster Funeral Home of Gaffney, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Walter Weaver
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Walter Louis Weaver, 72, of 309 Tracy St., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was a native of Polk County, Ga., and the son of the late Ella Mae Smith Haywood and stepson of the late Junious Haywood. He was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Laymen League. He was an Army veteran and was retired from Eaton Corp. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 4. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Chirstine H. Pearson. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Geraldine D. Weaver of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Kelvin and Sheila Weaver of Charlotte; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia Parham of Columbia, S.C., Linda and Richard Morday of Atlanta, Sheryl and Larry Penn of Maryland, Brenda Weaver of Cedartown, Ga., and JeMyrane-e Weaver of the home; a granddaughter, Nikki Moore of the home; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. C.A. Feemster officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. HENRIETTA - Mr. Wayne Keith Foster, 44, of 266 Proctor School Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. SHELBY - Mrs. Reba Davis Melton, 90, of 2101 Washburn Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late W.S. and Eva Whitesides Davis Sr. She was a homemaker and worked at Jenkins Livermush Co. She was a life-long member of Double Springs Baptist Church and the Dorcis Sunday School Class and worked in the nursery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Melton; a grandson, Gene Melton; five brothers, Sam, Garmon, Truman, Rush and Grady Davis; six sisters, Barbara Cabiness, Pearl Hawkins, Vertie Short, Lalah Page, Selma Whithrow and Blanche Gillespie. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Don and Geraldine Melton of Mooresboro, Tommy and Cindy Melton of Lattimore, and Mike Melton of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Melton of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, W.S. and Evelyn Davis Jr. of Lattimore; 10 grandchildren, David and Susan Melton; Carol and Keith Campbell, Mark W. Melton, Mark A. Melton, Todd and Laura Melton, Chad and Tina Melton, Rodney Melton, Jeff Melton, Shannon and Cher Galloway, Barbette and Blaine Morrison; a special friend, Betty Hendrick; and caregivers, Alan and Nina Moore. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Walker officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. BLACKSBURG - Mr. William C. "Bill" Wilburn Jr., 94, of 223 Kings Creek Drive, Kings Creek Community, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at home. FOREST CITY- Mrs. Kay Tour Hayes, 67, of 121 Hayes Drive, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late Michael James and Elvida Mazza Tour. She was a retired bookkeeper for Hayes Gulf Service Station. She attended Harmon Street Baptist Church and Emaculent Catholic Church and was a member of Woodmen of the World. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James William Hayes. She is survived by a son, James Ralph Hayes of Forest City; a daughter, Debra Ann Thompson of Forest City; and a grandson, James Edmond Moore of Beattyville, Ky. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Ken Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery. SHELBY - Mr. Steve S. Bailey, 95, of 2107 Tower Drive, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Bailous C. and Callie S. Bailey. He retired from Central Trucklines in Orlando, Fla., with 24 years' service. He belonged to Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Buena Towery Bailey, and a daughter, Lillian R. Herald. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred L. and Janet Bailey of Fremont, Calif., B. Cecil and Vickie Bailey of Orlando and Donald M. and Joan Bailey of Windemere, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue B. and Gene Davis of Shelby; a sister, Winnie Newton of the Masonic Eastern Star Home in Greensboro; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel in Shelby, with the Rev. Bryan Glisson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service, and at other times at the home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Orlando on Thursday at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home 30 minutes before the service. COWPENS, S.C. - Mr. Lester Andre Johnson Sr., 64, of 4605 Old Georgia Highway, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Born in Spartanburg County, S.C., he was a son of the late Fraygious and Garrie Mayes Johnson. A retired schoolteacher, he taught 25 years at Shelby Middle School. He belonged to Pleasant View United Methodist Church where he served as lay leader. He graduated from B.E. Mayes High School and from Claflin College, Orangeburg, S.C., and was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elna Sue Garrison Johnson. He is survived by a son, Lester A. Johnson Jr. of Cowpens; a daughter, Monica Johnson of Greenville, S.C.; three brothers, James O. Johnson of Suitland, Md., Roger Johnson and John C. Johnson of Cowpens; three sisters, Mary Landrum of Charleston, S.C., Frances Corbett and Barbara McNair of Pleasantville, N.J.; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild. The funeral is today at noon at Pleasant View United Methodist Church in Cowpens, with the Rev. Albert Branch officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Mauney Greene, 82, of 109-1 Lindsey Drive, died Sunday, March 03, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Winslow Mauney. A retired nursing assistant, she worked at Cleveland Regional Medical Center and at Turner's Nursing Home. She belonged to Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman W. Greene; a daughter, Patsy Dyer; a son-in-law, T.C. Preslar; two brothers, Joe Mauney and Leo Mauney; and a sister-in-law, Onell Mauney. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn Greene Preslar of Norwood and Janet Greene and Thomas Ledbetter of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, the Rev. Bynum and Lona Mauney of Fayetteville and Arthur and Carolyn Mauney of Shelby; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lois and Garland Pruitt of Cherryville, Edith and Samuel Lawing of Forest City and Dorothy Pitman of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Lois Mooney of High Point; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mitchell Pruitt and Bynum Mauney officiating. Ralph Baxter
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Leon Ralph Baxter, 88, of 3073 Sorrells Baxter Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Lincoln Nursing Center. Born Nov. 10, 1913, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late J. Henry and Sallie Boyles Baxter. He was a retired self-employed farmer and member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church. He served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded five bronze stars for five major campaigns (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe). He was among the forces that liberated Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He was a former member of the Lincoln County Board of Education and former County Committee Chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Ben Frank Baxter, Frontis Baxter, Wayne Baxter, Fairel Baxter and Kern Baxter; and a sister, Pearl Baxter. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Newton Baxter of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry W. and Susie Baxter of Cherryville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and Dr. J. Iverson Riddle of Morganton, Jean and William "Bill" Skibo of Cherryville and Lynn and the Rev. Wade Dellinger of Hudson; six grandchildren, Keith Brown II, Josh Skibo, Anna Skibo, Beth Williams, Matt Dellinger and Travis Baxter; a great-grandchild, Michaela Williams; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Stein and Mike Harrill officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
