SHELBY - Mr. Ray Philbeck, 64, of Rehobeth Church Road, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Paul and Naomi Holcombe Philbeck. He is survived by his wife, Beth Crowe Philbeck, and two brothers, James Philbeck and Maynard Philbeck, both of Shelby. A graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Kelly Ottinger officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home, Bostic.
Nancy Kerns
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Nancy Hill Kerns, 88, of White Oak Manor, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Born in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late William Baxter and Julia Cope Hill. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and former vice president of City Auto and Truck Parts and former secretary/treasurer of Kerns Brothers in Kings Mountain. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Wilmoth Kerns. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Mary Kerns of Kings Mountain; two grandchildren, W.D. "Butch" Kerns Jr. and his wife, Donna, and Clyde C. Kerns and his wife, Faye, all of Kings Mountain; five great-grandchildren, Anna Kerns, Will Kerns, Allyson Kerns, Ramey Kerns and Clay Kerns; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Harris Funeral Home. Larry Gentry
MOORESBORO - Mr. Larry S. Gentry, 40, of 106 Random Drive, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of George W. Gentry and Jeanette Thompson Gentry of Mooresboro. He was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church and was employed at Cone Mills of Cliffside. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Yvonne Walton Gentry of Mooresboro; five sons, Chas C. Rice and Jonathan M. Walton, both of the home, and Curtis O. Rice, Chadwick W. Gentry and Larry O. Gentry, all of Mooresboro; a stepdaughter, Sierra Walton of Mooresboro; two brothers, Ernie D. Gentry of Shelby and Craig Gentry of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Geneva Gentry of Grover, Georgina G. Hopper of Shelby, Lula G. Patterson of Earl and Regina G. Smith of Forest City. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Dover officiating. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Thelma Goforth
BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Thelma Beam Goforth, 82, of 742 Antioch Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. Born in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Doris and Ocie Bess Beam. She was married for 52 years to Lt. Col. George M. Goforth, who preceded her in death. She and her husband toured the European Theater of World War II on several occasions. She was a graduate of Northbrook High School and Appalachian Teacher's College. She taught school for 30 years and was a member of the NCEA, SCEA, and Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Blacksburg, where she taught Sunday school and held many offices. She was a former member of the Home Demonstration Club and the Grange. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Maria Goforth, and six brothers. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George E. and Jackie Goforth of Easley, S.C., and John R. and Paula Goforth of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Ann G. Rosi of Chicago and Jean G. Peach of Gastonia; a sister, Esther Shuford of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren, Gabrielle Rosi of San Francisco, Domino Rosi of Chicago, Marty Goforth of Chapel Hill, Brad Goforth of Kings Mountain, Katherine Peach of Boone and James Peach and Sally Peach, both of Gastonia. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church in Blacksburg with the Revs. Chris Barrett and Julian Lazar officiating. Burial will be in Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kings Mountain. CROUSE - Mrs. Hazel Louise Gilbert Mauney, 73, of 2355 Pleasant Grove Church Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at her home. John Carpenter Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. John Alton Carpenter Sr., 90, of 1138 Baxter Road, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Lincoln County, he was born March 8, 1911. He was a son of the late Clarence Eugene and Gaddie Lee Harrelson Carpenter. He was a retired farmer, formerly employed with Carpenter's Funeral Home, and retired from Cherry Motors of Cherryville after 20 years as a salesman. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, formerly serving as chairman of the official board, trustee chairman, caretaker of the cemetery for 20 years and a director and charter member of Gaston County Farm Bureau in Dallas, N.C. He was a supporter of agriculture and agriculture agencies and a leader in soil conservation services, adviser to agriculture extension, officer to agriculture stabilization committee. He was on the founding committee to establish Hugh's Pond Volunteer Fire Department, Panhandle section of Gaston County. He assisted in establishing the original Electrical and Telephone Co-op Company for western Lincoln and Gaston Counties in the 1940s. He was an officer in establishing the first Gaston County Agriculture Fair. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Beam Carpenter of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, John and Dot Carpenter of Laurinburg, Jack and Eleanor Carpenter of Raleigh, Dr. T. Gene and Linda Carpenter of Granite Falls and G. Patrick and Sally Carpenter of Anderson, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Dan Carpenter of San Diego, Calif., Joe Carpenter of Laurinburg, David Carpenter of Charlotte, Deborah Edwards of West End, Rebekah Carpenter of Atlanta, Tommy Carpenter of Winter Haven, Fla., and Thad Carpenter and Trent Carpenter, both of Anderson, S.C.; and seven great-grandchildren. Howard McSwain
SHELBY - Mr. Howard McSwain, 74, of 3532 Artee Road, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Hospice of Cleveland County. A native of Cleveland County, he was retired from Celanese, where he worked for 26 years. He was a woodworker. He was a life member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, where he served as a former deacon, a choir member and a male chorus member and the mission team from Beaver Dam. He served in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sheiman and Docia Lee Brooks McSwain. He is survived by his wife, Lena Hamrick McSwain of the home; two sons, Michael McSwain of Lawndale and Rodney McSwain of Duncan, S.C.; two brothers, Hazel McSwain and Farris McSwain, both of Shelby; three sisters, Shirley Funderburke of Hickory and Janice Cabiness and Marcelle Hamrick, both of Shelby; three granddaughters, Hillary McSwain of Shelby and Kaila McSwain and Katie McSwain, both of Duncan; and a grandson, Paul McSwain of Shelby. ASHEBORO - Benjamin Thomas Goebel, 2, of 327 Cooper St., died Saturday, March 2, 2002. He is survived by his mother, Eleanor Swiers Goebel of Asheboro; his father, Staff Sgt. Thomas E. Goebel of Camp Lejeune; his grandparents, Charles and Susan Swiers of Asheboro, Dan and Lillian Littlefield of Shelby and Theodore Goebel of Holden Beach; and his great-grandparents, A.B. and Hazel Sellers and Hiatt and Rosa Morgan, all of Asheboro, Christian Swiers of Wilmington and Thomas Goebel of Texas. BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Nellie Louise Withrow Wray, 67, of 106 Bay Court, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served in the choir, parish notes and United Methodist Women Association and Evangelism. She retired from Jackson's Cafeteria on Jan 28, 2002, where she worked since 1974 as head meat cook. She was previously employed by the Winter House and Gardner-Webb University. She was preceded in death by her mother, Blanche Withrow Littlejohn; a son, Bryan Wray and a brother, Forrest Littlejohn. She is survived by her husband, Winfred Wray of the home; three daughters, Felicia Shelton of Forest City and Connie Wray and Sidney Wray, both of the home; six sons, Thomas Wray of Guam, Raymond Wray of Boiling Springs, Ricky Wray and Eric Wray, both of Shelby, Tim Wray of Dallas, N.C., and Kevin Wray of the home; a sister, Catherine Chambers of Boiling Springs; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. SHELBY - Mrs. Reba Davis Melton, 90, of 2101 Washburn Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late W.S. Sr. and Eva Whitesides Davis. She was a homemaker and worked at Jenkins Livermush Co. She was a life-long member of Double Springs Baptist Church and the Dorcis Sunday School Class and worked in the nursery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Worth S. Melton; a son, William B. Melton; a grandson, Gene Melton; five brothers, Sam, Garmon, Truman, Rush and Grady Davis; six sisters, Barbara Cabiness, Pearl Hawkins, Vertie Short, Lalah Page, Selma Whithrow and Blanche Gillespie. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Don and Geraldine Melton of Mooresboro, Tommy and Cindy Melton of Lattimore, and Mike Melton of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Melton of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, W.S. and Evelyn Davis Jr. of Lattimore; 10 grandchildren, David and Susan Melton; Carol and Keith Campbell, Mark W. Melton, Mark A.
